Intifada means "rebellion" in Arabic. There were intifada against British rule, Spanish rule in middle east countries during the late 1800s and intifada in support of women's rights.
In November 1988, Israel was condemned by a large majority of the UN General Assembly for its actions against the intifada. The resolution was repeated in the following years. That was regarding Palestine's first intifada, even Reagan mentioned this in a keynote speech.
