- In this video, I show some of the process of building my first Qanun music instrument.
I got interested in woodworking a few years ago and started with some small projects. As a professional Qanun player, I decided in 2017 to make my own instrument myself. The journey took more than a year of research and work. As shown in the video, most of the work was done using hand tools.

Amazing!! Everything! The work, the result, the music, the musician and the person. I‘m so inspired and proud to know you. All the respect! One of the most satisfying videos I‘ve seen for a very long time. Bravo
Amazing craftmanship! Wonderful musician! Stunning!
Thank you for sharing this journey. Marvellous.
Thank you very much!!! I am trying to make my own because I want to learn to play it. Unfortunately I dont have money to buy already made one nor good woodworking tools but I'll manage somehow. Thank you so much for sharing this!😀
Hello dear friend
مشاءالله تبارك الله عليك
I'm starting on my second Kanun. Miniature model with only the highest 15 courses and no levers, gotta grow out my left thumbnail. Lol I bought 12ft of curly maple for the frame, going to use walnut for the top and bottom and unfigured hard maple for the pegblock.
Sounds good. Good luck! I would like to see your work
incredible

Great talent you have, where can I find technical information on dimensions, also how the mandals are positioned. I Build my own ouds, and would like to build a kanun any help is appreciated.
There are ocean of info in the internet. All you have to do is dig it a little more. I'm pretty sure you will find all of your answers.
Looks so wonderful with how much just goes into such an instrument. What kind of wood is the foot structure? Is it maple?
The foot, large, and small bases are made out of beech wood. The bracings are made out of spruce.
Je suis admiratif de votre réalisation. Bravo

Did you make the pegs? Or did you buy them?
Over all, what kind of tools are needed to make desired pegs? Any clue?
Thanks.
I made my own pegs. But I was not very satisfied with the wood. So I bought ones from Turkey.
To make the pegs, you need to build a jig to cut them and then you need to roughly turn them. Then you need to make the conical shape using a peg sharpener (for violin/viola).
@@gilbertyammine Thank you for your reply.
For the past several years, I have been trying to find a site to show how Qanun's pegs are made. Believe it or not, I have not been able to find at least one website to demonstrate how it’s done! My focus, primarily, was on Turkeyeh to see if any one of Qanun makers or one of Qanun players would touch on that issue. Unfortunately, there is none.
Moreover, I have discovered that India (Kolkata Manufacturers) is supplying Qanun pegs to Turkeyeh as well as other part of Arab countries!!!
I would appreciate it if you could provide me with any video clips or website to touch on the process of making Qanun pegs.
Happy Holidays and thank you.
All the best.
