  • "In 20 years' time, China is going to be so different from what it is now." Martin Jacques, former senior fellow at the Department of Politics and International Studies of Cambridge University, has borne witness to China's evolution over the past 30 years. How does one understand Chinese modernization, and what sets it apart from Western models? Renowned as a writer and political scientist, Martin elucidates the distinction between a "civilization state" and a "nation state." #ChinaTalk #2024ChinaAgenda

You are probably more truly "Chinese" than most Chinese living in China today. The CCP killed off most traditional Chinese culture that wasn't useful to them staying in power. That includes Confucianism. Confucius is pretty much banned in China today.
I lived in Malaysia for a while and worked primarily with Chinese Malaysians. I was stunned at the long heritage of my colleagues. I also realized their values are quite different from today's mainland China if you pull away a few layers.
And being a 3rd generation, you are kind of new to Malaysia : ) Some of my friends are 6th or 7th gens. Amazingly, they have kept records of every of their forefathers all the way back to when they left China.

You can see China all over the world...just take a look at the overseas Chinese and those of Chinese descend living outside China, we are all the same inherently.
Take the Chinese Malaysian for example, you'll see Chinese temples somewhere in rural Malaysia (temples that were established more than 100 plus years ago at the place where they first landed/settled), Chinese Chung Hua schools in rural areas set up with funds from charity and businesses/farming in those rural areas settled by Chinese, essentially see pockets of Chinese civilizational state in rural Malaysia.
As an example, the city of Sibu, in the state of Sarawak, which was an unsettled swamp land made into a successful settlement/city today. The early Chinese that settled there demonstrated fundamental characteristics of China and were clearly the product of China's civilizational roots. They had the civilizational template from China which made them mobile and able to form successful settlements or settle on any land and anywhere in the world e.g. even Chinese takeaways in Nauru.
Professor you are right, China is a Civilizational state and not a nation state, and the civilizational roots provided the Civilizational template which made the Chinese mobile and adaptable which can clearly be seen from the Chinese diaspora in the world today.

....so true! The Chinese are everywhere - you can even find a Chinese restaurant somewhere at the end tip of Argentina. I guess it must be the leftover of Admiral Cheng He´. MSM history says that, the straits was discovered by Portuguese Magellan. The truth is Admiral Cheng He´ was the first to discover that straits in the early 14 century. During that period and time the Portuguese didn't had the seafaring knowledge to sail that distance - not until the late 15 century when the self name King Vasco da Gama make his debut journey to India and finally ended up at Macao. Western and Chinese modernization is vastly different and shall be different. From history of China, the great voyages of Cheng He, structures like the great wall of China to the story of Sibu, a city in the state of Sarawak, Malaysia, the Chinese had always look to trade, businesses and built structures to create an environment conducive to trade.
The voyages of Cheng He was not for conquest of lands or territories but trade routes. When the Chinese first settled on that unsettled swamp land called Sibu, they were there to carve out a living not conquest. The one belt one road initiative China brought investment and development to Africa and other parts of the world for business, to establish land route for trade.
China's modernization is about trade and prosperity as many would agree, violence, chaos, wars, fights etc are bad for business. The west in the past resorted to supply of opium to China, colonization, conquest, divide and conquer in Africa, profit from sales of weapons and looting of the country's resources etc.. and today, media propaganda as part of the tool to topple China, to incite more wars etc..
What is the difference between the two? One has the one belt and one road initiative that builds whilst the other, veto ceasefires and funds more wars even if their country moves ever closer to ruins.

Truth. Throughout history, China has been the one civilization that could completely sustain an advanced economy independently. We're seeing China return to that, as they indigenize more and more technology, de-risking by decoupling from Western technology. Within a decade, China will very likely be fully technology independent, and the world will choose between Chinese and Western standards.

China grew fast over last 40 years is an eroneous saying that must be corrected. Its high rate of growth began since PRCs founding in 1949, so its been almost 75 years of fast growth. Its just that before the 1980s, China didn't use GDP to express the size of its economy. Also by emphasing the last 40 years, certain people are using it as a trick to devalue China's enormous economic progress made under Chairman Mao, who passed away in 1976.

China has not been interested in leading the world.
No one can clearly explain if this is because they do not want to rock the boat with the USA currently holding that role, or if it is in their civilisation DNA that they don't do it.
In their thousands of years being the most powerful, they never wanted to lead any other outside their civilisation.
Unfortunately with globalisation, China has no choice but to lead. This is essential for world peace and development. Developing countries are looking forward to China's lead.

China is leading the world, but doing so differently from the USA. You can see this in BRICS, SCO, RCEP, and G77+China.
What's interesting is that China isn't pushing to restore Vietnam (Chinese Province for 1,000 years) nor Korea (tributary for centuries), even though both are culturally essentially Chinese.

"China has not been interested in leading the world.
No one can clearly explain if this is because they do not want to rock the boat with the USA currently holding that role, or if it is in their civilisation DNA that they don't do it."
Don't use superstition and spontaneity to explain historical developments. There is a scientific method for economics and history, called Marxism. It is materialist and seeks to explain everything in the material world through understanding the conditions that lead to its developments.
There is no "No one can explain." or "Civilization DNA." which are both idealism and unscientific.
"In their thousands of years being the most powerful, they never wanted to lead any other outside their civilisation."
Unscientific. China doesn't conquer or lead other nations for thousands of years because they never needed to. They don't need to conquer (that much) other nations for resources *because China is so rich it doesn't need to do that.* Not to mention China's geography encouraging a united country in an isolated bubble surrounded by desert or mountains and easy assimilation between the tribes and people inside that bubble. Europe developed capitalism which required them to expand endlessly to maintain infinite growth (which is necessary for a Capitalist economy, as economic stagnation leads to economic failure) which resulted in them invading and colonizing hundreds of countries over the ocean to survive with their volatile economies. Now, as the third world becomes independent and free of colonialism and necolonialism. You can see the capitalist economies of the west waning. While nations like the USA keeps intervening in the 3rd world as they attempt to keep the price of their resources tolerable with West Asian Oil.

Do you want to know another nation that started off as a dying feudal state, and became a spacefaring power in just a few decades? The Soviet Union.
China is precisely as powerful and great as it is now because of the CPC. No dynasty has been capable of achieving what the Vanguard party has. And no capitalist nation has been able to do what the communists have. The Soviet Union and The People's Republic of China are the two fastest growing nations in existence. Who knew that the scientific method applied to economics and history (Marxism) allowed you to achieve unimaginable prosperity.

In contrast to what the west has been trying to bad-mouth China's aggression, China never was a military power like the Mongols or Anglo Saxons trying to rule the world,... but as a wealthy and civilized state that accounted for 60% of world GDP.
That's what the Chinese mean as the goal of returning to the top.

Pro. Jacques is knowledgeable about China. However, there is a crucial concept that the West, including most experts on China, fails to mention: Karma. Karma is a term that does not have an exact equivalent in English, but its closest translation would be "The Day of Retribution." These two concepts are definitely different. In the West, it is believed that one can invade other countries or kill their people if necessary, as long as it is done for a seemingly just cause and without any sense of remorse. For example, the killings of the Chosen People in Kaza.
However, the Chinese have a different perspective. They believe that actions have consequences, and those who do wrong will suffer them sooner or later. The Chinese believe that even if someone commits an act of aggression, such as bullying, isolating, or issuing military threats, they will eventually face punishment from their gods, including natural disasters.
The West is out of line in its belief system, and China, which has been given a dog's name, bears an increasingly silent burden of oppression from the West.

Jacques and I came to China at the same time. He came to visit, I came to live. He reads into the tableau that the peasants were working to lift themselves out of poverty. I would account for their motivations differently, although his projected rationalizations would play better for a Hollywood movie script. "Chinese modernization is a public good for the developing world," is the keystone of his argument. His definition of Chinese civilization is solipsistic, and he omits the ethnocentric bit; that Mao founded the dynasty which succeeded the Qing as a rabid ethnostate (not to mention that another of the foundational pillars was, "the destruction of the Western Powers.") Is he working for the Global Times?

Comrade Jacques in Great Britain. According to Wikipedia, “Jacques joined the Communist Party of Great Britain at eighteen, and at both Manchester and Cambridge universities was very active in student politics. In 1966 he was one of the prime movers behind the Radical Student Alliance, a left-of-centre cross-party organisation of around 400 students from 108 universities and colleges which sought to build a students' movement 'able to take collective action on matters of general social concern'. At Cambridge he was instrumental in the formation of the Cambridge University Students' Union.[6] By 1967 he was a member of the Communist Party's executive committee, "probably the youngest member ever at about twenty-two",[8] and he remained a member until 1991.” So?

China will remain as China as China’s history repeated demonstrated, independent from any advancement of modernization or material transformation of China because of its culture root which poses a contrary different mindset, behavior as the Westerner. The true question actually worth exploiting is how the future world is going to be affected by China modernization? The answer is yet to be discovered, but one thing is certain which is there will be more peace than war, more fairness and equality than preponderance and discrimination, and more development and prosperous than depredation and exploitation, and eventually lead to a more habitable mother earth.
