    IF transistors that were very popular in the 70-80s in Europe were the BF198 (for agc stage) and the BF199. Just a suggestion for a p/n to try. Also, another RF transistor for quite universal uses still in production is the KSP10 (former MPSH10) available in TO92 and SOT23 packages.

    In context, many of the repair technicians chronological this set would have never gotten far into the troubleshooting and never to repair. Here are the Vintage Television Repair Eras and usual mood of the technicians.
    1950-1970, almost every job is tubes and wired chassis. RCA platform and highly consistent issues. Hybrids are zero to little. Buying a home and making family.
    1965-1980, printed circuit boards are replacing all new manufacturing of televisions. Tubes and CRTs are baking the PCs. New problem with PC breaks. But mostly RCA derivatives so troubleshooting is straightforward. Kids are fun and my wife is still hot.
    1970-1980, hybrid sets and the mix of tubes, more powerful than ever CRTs, ovenexcated the PCs, one off transistors, and first-generation demodulation ICs. Rerun RCA platforms were gone from new manufactured sets, so circuit and system designs were often newish. Transistors were odd and theoretical. All kinds of heat, intermittents, etc. Manufacturing standards were declining in this stretch. Why the heck did I get married?

    Very intriguing. I remember the TV techs couldn't fix our TV back in the early 70's, so my father bought a new one. I wish I had someone like you back then to fix it. It was a black bar, 1/3 of the screen, slowly moving from top the bottom. Smacking the TV sometimes helped, but it kept coming back.

      Funny though cause I've seen plastic early 2000's tv's that have been running in doctors offices with probably 10yrs power on time at this point, evident by dust caked on the wall behind them just from convective air flow. No repairs obviously, and still watchable. So they clearly figured out the transistor problem eventually. I'd bet that if capacitors were better, the all tube sets would do the same.

    I've seen these kind of faults before it is most likely a semiconductor junction fracture, either a transistor base emitter junction break or diode the best way to track this is freezer gas. Also if using a higher frequency transistor than the circuit requires, can amplify unwanted noise. Small noise signals often get discarded through a circuit if it has low band pass, but if you chose a higher frequency transistor that operates outside the normal bandwidth of the signal path it can act as an antenna and introduce harmonics into the signal path.

    Interesting to see that the transistors are failing before the remaining unchanged electrolytic capacitors. Also that such an old C.R.T. is still showing very good emissions. I installed the DC version of that meter about a year ago to measure the yield from my solar panels, so far so good. It looks the same but comes with shunt rather than a current transformer. When it gets up to 1000Wh the meter switches to display kWh and it counts up to at least 999kWh.

    We had a Philco-Ford hybrid with an IF transistor open (forget which stage). Replaced with an ECG equivalent. It "worked' sort of, but AGC action was screwed up. Rather than trying to re-engineer it, ordered the proprietary Philco transistor by part#, and that fixed it.

    • @ohger1
      @ohger1 Před 4 měsíci

      There are certain applications when only the original part will work - that IF stage is one of them. I remember repairing a Hitachi SS TV in the 80s for a vertical problem, and I could not get the linearity acceptable (tried ECGs, SKs, HEPs, etc.) I ordered the originals from Hitachi (they were also germaniums to boot!) and that fixed it.

      Any device that do the product of V*I samples on each sample cicle will get Wh, but if they decided to calculates Irms and Vrms, then, they are let with VA. Still you need to sample V and I and acumulate them during an interval. This is done around 2 or 3K times a sec on meters. Var is easy, same as Wh but with V shifted 90 degrees. This is very easy once you have the qeue of samples, just pick always not the actual one but one is old by 90 degree, tipically the samples used 10 cycles ago (simplified).

    To put it in another perspective: that 304 kWh what it consumed since the installation of that meter (which happened maybe around the beginning of November 2023?) is the average 2-months consumption of my _whole_ home - with TV, Hifi, my electronics lab, fridge, lighting, hairdryer etc... _everything_ not just a TV 😅You can imagine what the world's energy demand would be if the technology was still at this vacuum tubes level... 😱

    How can I contact shango? I have this really really cool tec tel rad radio telephone on its way from eBay. Thing looks like the red phone the president would pick up. 3 channels crystal controlled, tube, not sure if it's on 27mhz but I think so. Can't find any info on it as far as a manual or service data or who made it. I figured he could tell me better where to look, he seems to identify even just bare chassis easily and find data. Maybe I'd see if shango can revive it. I'm a ham general class, upgrading to extra tomorrow actually. 3/2. Anyway I could handle fixing it if I located some data
