The Image: Northern urban (anti-) beauty. Please listen, I absolutely believe this is one of the very best scenes ever captured in world cinema, period - in my top 10 at least.
Exceptionally rich, charged, beautiful (almost magical) emotional cinematography capturing the landscape of Northern, industrial Britain in the late 50s* - the bus rolling in to the gloomy backstreet of 50s Salford, pausing momentarily under the surprisingly bright streetlamp at the beginning to let Jo off (aestheticoftheimage39.files.w..., the strange geometry of the almost 'monolithic' gasworks where the young couple make up and court (aestheticoftheimage39.files.w..., the extraordinary 'flash' reflection of the canal as they walk by in the final frame. * Reminds me of the 'serious' journalistic 'grim up North' photo essays you would periodically see in the Observer magazine on Sunday (aestheticoftheimage39.files.w...) during my youth - always in b&w to show the stark reality of the North to us Southern softies...
