I grew up in Canada, English is my native language and even native speakers do need subtitles sometimes. Some actors just mumble the words, or there is a lot of background noise like explosions, shootings, etc. Besides that, some dialects are really hard to understand. Game of Thrones for instance...it's almost impossible for North Americans to watch it without subtitles because of the accent of the actors. I don't have trouble understanding British people when I talk to them...but, British movies are hard to understand without subtitles. Ask any American and they will say the can't understand all words in a movie.
Sure. You are right.
In fact, We the native Spanish speakers need subtitles if we are trying to understand a Chilean person, jajaja
I am from Brazil so I speak portuguese but we can't understand 100% portugal movies or interviews, we need to pay atention to understand everything or to watch it with subtitles
100%. I was gonna say exactly that.

Why I understand every single word you are saying but I can’t understand native speakers ? What a magic is this??
Because she improved her diction, normal people don't exercise as much as her. People mumble and chew words, they have dialects and slang. Actors should have good diction, they imitate normal people for artistic purpose.
My first language it’s Spanish, I’m learning English and I could understand this video 100% without subtitles, but when I’m watching a tv show or a series I just can’t understand without subtitles, I always turn on the subtitles in English and I understand almost everything. It's the first time I can watch a video in English without subtitles and understand what he's saying! You have became in my favorite CZcamsr☺️ (I’m a Spanish native and your videos help me so much)
I can understand roughly 85% of TV shows of my interest without subtitles. Maybe it could even peek at 95% depending on the subject, accents, my mental state, but I always keep them on, cos' why not? Sometimes I wonder whether it makes me rely on them too much, but whenever I go watching an English movie in a Finnish movie theater, I get a reality check. I understand perfectly enough without subtitles. Missing a few words here and there doesn't impact my understanding. On top of that I would zone out for a second or two even in my native language, so I consider that normal. Subtitles in my case - English. I never put them in my native language, it messes with my brain. 😂
Yes, I think it's only effective when we use subtitles in the language of the content we're watching, otherwise it's not effective at all haha

Listening to you I honestly can’t tell that you are a non-native speaker of American English. You’re accent is THAT good! Respect!
Sometimes according to the way how American actors rapidly pronounce words and phrases it seems to me that even native speakers cant comprehend it at least for the first time🥲😂Thank you for such an interesting and necessary topic🧡🧡🧡
I heard from some Americans that some phrases they tend to say quickly. They understand them more through the intonation of the sound than the sound of the words themselves.

Hi Verokina! I'm feeling very happy because I'm brazilian, that is, I speak Portuguese and I understood your entire video, of course, by reading the subtitles (in English), I really appreciate all your tips because I identified with the problems you faced, they are the same ones I am facing. I hope to be more experienced in 3 months, I am studying every day and excited to speak and understand English well.
I was made the same with your video, I saw that with the subtitles, I'm grateful for your free help.
It's so important to realise that you're not some kind of "failure" because you need to use subtitles. Movies are hard for the reasons your mentioned (fast speech, slang, accents, cultural references)! There are times when I would have loved to have had subtitles when watching movies on video in French. But unfortunately cassettes didn't have that option!
I totally agree with watching something simpler and building up to watching movies later. And thanks for saying that "Friends" is not suitable for beginners! It's not as hard as certain movies or TV shows that are dramas, but it's not the first thing you should watch.
great!
I understand u without subtitles i m so happy😭❤
Oh wow, as a native English speaker, I initially thought you were also a native speaker learning another language. Your pronunciation is amazing.
You are very much correct when you say that friends is a complicated show. At least someone said the truth..its a good show but for those who are learning throughout the show it's a challenge 😢😢
I honestly can understand English perfectly without subtitles and it's my 3rd language.. Understanding takes time and it's just part of learning process .. If you can't understand without sub just put them and if you can't understand English subtitles put your native language sub on for a while till you are confident.. What's really hard about any language is to fix your pronunciation and practice the speaking part.. Understanding it's quite easy in my opinion because you can solo it but to speak you need to interact with people that speaks that language
Yeah, I agree with u

Mi idioma es el portugués, pero me recuerdo que cuando estaba aprendiendo Español, no veía absolutamente nada con subtítulos y no porque me iba a ayudar, sino porque no existía la opción de activar los subtítulos. Hoy soy muy agradecida por eso porque el proceso de hablar y comprender después de un cierto tiempo fue tan natural que si me preguntas cuándo empecé a comprender al 100% no podría decírtelo con certeza.

I've been living in America for almost 4 years and up to this day I still watch some TV shows with subtitles on. It depends on the movie and the show, PG movies are easier to understand, R and NC-17 movies are harder sometimes. in brief:
1. **Introduction and Problem Statement**:
- Language learners often struggle to understand TV shows and movies in a foreign language without subtitles.
- Veronika shares her personal experience of facing this challenge while learning English and how she overcame it.
2. **Speed and Pronunciation**:
- Native speakers in movies and TV shows speak at a natural conversational pace, which can be too fast for learners.
- Veronika's solution: Initially, she stopped watching challenging shows and turned to educational CZcams videos to improve her listening skills.
3. **Use of Idioms and Slang**:
- TV shows and movies often use idioms and slang that aren't taught in traditional language classes.
- Veronika's solution: She used subtitles in the same language as the show to understand and learn new idioms and slang.
4. **Lingopie Platform**:
- Veronika introduces and recommends the Lingopie platform, designed for language learners to watch movies and TV shows with interactive subtitles.
- The platform offers instant translations, built-in flashcards, and quizzes to reinforce vocabulary.
5. **Accents and Dialects**:
- Different regional accents and dialects can make comprehension challenging.
- Veronika's solution: Initially, she focused on mastering one accent (e.g., American English) before exposing herself to others.
6. **Cultural Context and References**:
- Movies and TV shows often include cultural references specific to the country of production.
- Veronika's approach: She watched popular shows, movies, and listened to music from the target culture to familiarize herself with cultural references.
7. **Conclusion**:
- Veronika emphasizes the importance of patience and continuous learning.
- She encourages viewers to try Lingopie for language learning through movies and shows.
The video provides insights and practical solutions for language learners facing challenges in understanding foreign content.
Thank you!
