Another year, another opening day at Yankee Stadium, accompanied by the annual museum train trips with the Lo-Vs and R33/R36 TOMC.
The SMEE train ran as a 10-car train this time around, coming out of 207th Street Yard. The Lo-Vs came out of 239th Street Yard. Both trains ran down to South Ferry Loop before running up to Grand Central and Yankees. After discharging passengers, both trains ran onto the middle track and staged at 161st Street, where the SMEE train was broken in half before going back to the yard. One half went up to East 180th Street Yard while the other half went back to 207 Yard. The Lo-Vs returned to 239 Yard. Enjoy =)

Did they preserve this set because of their extremely well conditions and sought to be chosen as an event train for future use?

Pretty sure they're in the New York Transit Museum's collection?

@@happyburger23yes everything you see are part of the Transit Museum. The Lo-Vs, however, are owned by Railway Preservation Corp., which often allows the Transit Museum to operate them on excursions.

The eight R33 MLs that ended up in the museum fleet (9010-9011, 9016-9017, 9068-9069, 9206-9207) were among 58 SMS overhauled cars in 2002 to be used for reserve service, but made moot by the R142S Kawasaki option in 2004, hence they were in better shape (the best of the best R33s were selected for this program, of which most were rebuilt as R161 rider cars).
9586-9587 were the very last cars on the very last Redbird train, 11/3/03.
9542-9543 were the very last pair of R36 MLs in service. These 34 oddballs were leftover R33 ML shells that were held over when the last 40 R33s ended up as single units for the 7 Line rushed out for the World's Fair, leaving the leftover R33 shells delivered at the end of the R36 contract. These two were also among the very last four of the IRT SMEE generation (delivered Jan 1965 with 9540-9541) and also the very last rail equipment in North America with traditional drop sash windows (excepting historic replicas and cabooses). 9543 tested the Westinghouse E-Cam in 1988, apparently a success since the GOH R44s received it in 1991 and later all R62s, R62As, R68s and R68As had E-Cam upgrade kits, which also adds to their historic value, in addition to the Main Line R36s being the very first radio equipped cars at NYCT in 1965.

Seems the NYTM wants to forget the 80s happened, with graffiti and high crime. But if the fleet should be rationalized (given yard space at a premium and less SMEE parts available in the future) , the 8 R33 MLs should be reduced to 4 (four pairs to two), with one each in original bright red, silver and blue, all white and kale green, as there are already two R36 Redbird pairs. The olive drab would be missing, but there's no R21, R22, R26 or R28 available.
