  • More than Twelve million people, men, women and children were dragged by force from Africa and sold as slaves in the ports of the Atlantic Ocean in the Americas. The Yorubans, coming from Nigeria, Benin and Togo, and their descendants, were able to keep their religion mainly in Brazil and Cuba../There are some stories that are known in both places and since slaves in those years had no communication between Cuba and Brazil, but they have, the same knowledge, it is a sign of how authentic is the knowledge of things. Orixas are divinized ancestors,/ they are non material forces./ To manifest themselves and become perceptible to humans, these forces have to incorporate in certain persons who are devoted to the cult. When a Pae de Santo sees somebody, he knows what kind of person he or she is...He recognized people through their Orixas. If the person is violent, he knows he is an Ogum or a Shangó. If the person is good natured, he knows he or she is Nana Buruku....., if masochistic then it is Abalua-aye or Omalu. If it is someone who is good, then he or she is Yemayá. If a man is effeminate, he is not going to say that he is gay. He says "you are Oxum", because the tendency of a man to be feminine is explained by having a feminine saint. People who receive Orixás must be initiated. During initiation they lose the notion of who they are.
