2021 Dodge Durango R/T Tow 'n Go: UNBEATABLE Towing and Handling | Driving.ca

  • It's not far off from a Hellcat starting in your driveway. Poke the 5.7 litre HEMI V8 in the Durango R/T Tow 'n Go into action with the red starter button, and a deep, building-penetrating bark explodes from the up-sized tailpipe artillery, before settling into a deep and pulsating idle that's anything but discreet. In motion, this hilarious exhaust system has a snarl that responds and morphs with your throttle inputs, and accentuates many gear shifts with a loud snap from the tailpipes. It's silly, but it's a lot of fun.

    I have a 2019 R/T with regular tow package and a 2021 R/T with Tow 'n' Go.
The Tow 'n' Go suspension is significantly more forgiving on rough roads than the regular R/T's stiff suspension... if you have the drive mode in standard cruise. When you change the Tow 'n' Go's drive mode to Sport, the suspension really firms up and I'm thinking that may be what Justin was using on that bumpy road. Track mode is even stiffer. But for daily driving, the ride in Eco or cruise mode is very comfortable without reducing the Durango to a wobbly boat.
The regular R/T's suspension is physically different and lacks adjustability. I'd describe it as "firm" rather than stiff. This can be irritating when driven over potholed roads in urban areas. But on the highway or winding mountain roads, the regular R/T hugs the asphalt with inconsequential sway and neutral handling... no oversteer or understeer.
As for braking... I don't understand Justin's experience. Frankly, the Tow-N-Go's brakes are more sensitive than those of the regular R/T. After driving the 2019 R/T for two years, when I transitioned to the 2021 Tow-N-Go, I initially felt the brakes were "grabby". It took a couple of days to get the feel for them.
If you can afford the Tow-N-Go and you were thinking about the regular R/T, I'd suggest test-driving both and drive the Tow-N-Go in Eco/Sport/Track modes to feel the difference. I think you'll like the pothole absorption of the Tow-N-Go better than the stock R/T.

I have a 2020 Dodge Durango GT AWD Tow-N-Go package. The new model has such nice upgrades with the new dash and headlights. But the Tow-N-Go package really makes the Durango nice. I let a grand nephew drive mine from Marysville, CA to Fallon, NV. And he thought it had the Hemi, not the 3.6L v6. While the tested has a higher price tag than the $42k sticker of my Durango. I am quite certain a buyer of the tested version would find value in their purchase. And the GM and Ford buyer of competitive vehicles may feel let down. I towed a brand new 7x16 Well Cargo trailer from Aromas, CA to Lancaster, CA. The trailer towed very nicely over 2 mountain ranges. I later did a tow test with our Ram 2500 and 1500 diesels. And the Durango handled the massive size of the trailer. Just as nice as the pickup trucks.
This v8 Hemi version can only be an extreme pleasure to drive. And the ONLY advantage the Ford and GM products have. Could be one more seat in some seating configurations. Otherwise the owners of the competition. Are just plain envious!

You definitely have the tow package. You don't have a TOW N GO. You need to have a 5.7 hemi RT trim Durango to get that package.

@@jakey20022 The build sheet, and the Mulroney sticker say Tow-N-Go. The factory can call it anything they want. I would rather have a gen 3 Ecodiesel. Both the Wrangler and the Gladiator are too big for my purposes. When size is not an issue. I take our Ram 1500 or 2500. And for power, the Cummins is unbeatable. The VGT engine brake is unmatched.

@@jameseroh6544 I'm pretty sure @Jake Rheault is correct. "Tow 'n' Go" was not available for the 2020 model year, let alone for the GT Trim.
You say you have the build sheet. Do you have the version with the three-character component codes? If so: Which of these components appear on your build sheet?
AAN, BR5, JCC, JJ6, SDX, SMC, TAD, TWE, XG8
If you don't have the coded version of the build sheet, kindly answer these questions:
What is the top speed displayed on your speedometer?
What tires came from the factory?
Does your Durango have mode selectors for Track/Sport/Tow/Snow?
Do you see "Brembo" printed on the front calipers? Red or Black
Does your suspension have Bilstein dampeners? These will be yellow.
Does the stock exhaust wake up the neighbors?
Look at the sticker on the driver's side door (the white one, not the yellow one attached to the B-pillar). What is the GAWR figure? 39XX (fill in the XX)
One final check. Take a peek at your rear suspension. Does it have a stabilizer bar just like the front?
Your answers will definitely determine whether you have the Tow-n-Go package or whether you have "Trailer Tow Group IV" (which is what would appear on the Mulrooney sticker).

@@TheCondoInRedondo The gear ratio is different than the regular vehicles or the typical tow package. The heart of the Tow-n-Go package is the rear air suspension and the lower gear ratio. The other features are nice too. The rear suspension has a big fat roll bar to go with the air suspension. The rear axle is 3900 gawr. 20" wheels, which I want replace for better all weather traction tire selection. Brembo red brake calipers are an extra cost option on RT models. I usually buy EBC Kevlar brake pads, carbon fiber, or carbon metalic. Whatever is the best available for that application. On my wife's Cummins powered 2018 Ram pickup. I replaced the brake pads in the first month. But my Durango has excellent brakes. And will likely see 160k or more before being replaced.
I was just wanting an SUV vehicle that could fit in parking spaces that our 2 Ram pickups were too tight in. For heavy towing, our Cummins powered pickup is rated to tow way more than any Durango. But the day I spotted a 7x16 Wells Cargo trailer on a dealer lot. My Durango easily took it home. I would have liked wider mirrors. But it was okay. No problems in a 70mph crosswind with an empty trailer. And 15mpg, while towing at the typical class 8 truck speed of 61mph, was respectable. Climbed Tejon Pass @ 60mph, in Sport mode, speed control on. No problems.
I drive my Durango 40k miles a year. I just need a vehicle that can take daily duties for 6 or more years reliably. The manufacturer can call a vehicle package by any name they want. My comments were only to show the whole Durango line is a good value for towing.
Even if the Hemi models need a modification to the oil system to get a decent life out of the cam and lifters. And their water pumps commonly fail within the warranty period.
A relative driving my Durango from Marysville, CA, to Fallon, NV. Was surprised to learn my Durango has a V6. His daily driver is a supercharged Cadillac.

@@olliecrow3547 The option includes more than just red calipers. The rotors become slotted/two-piece versions. Though the rotor diameter remains 13.75 inches in the front, same diameter that's standard with the Tow-N-Go package with black calipers.

@TheCondoInRedondo thanks for the information. The black caliper rotors are "slotted" as well. There's 3 little slots in the front rotors, like baby slots. The front rotor size is 15" six piston & rear are 13.8" 4 piston. I do recall hearing about 2 piece rotors, then I checked mine and I was like...hmm, mine are not. From that point on, I always thought I heard wrong. Now I know.

@@olliecrow3547 I just reviewed photographs of my rotors (with black Brembo calipers).
I DO SEE "A" SLOT on the front rotor, very near the hub. Unfortunately, the locations where the other two slots would be is hidden by the spokes of the wheel. It's dark outside at the moment. I'll take another photo tomorrow to count the slots.
