  • The Interstate 59/20 Bridge in Downtown Birmingham is scheduled to re-open January 21st, 2019. The $700M project is almost 2 months ahead of schedule. ALDOT plans to repave roads underneath and adjacent to the bridges that have been damaged during construction.

My question is "How much safer is it?" I hope it makes commuting much better because I have to travel back and forth between Huntsville, and Birmingham daily.

I live in Birmingham, and it’s a lot safer. Furthermore, a lot of people comment on things going on in the city who don’t live here and it’s typically negative. So no, the bridge is hollow and not built with popsicle sticks.. I would assume wherever you are is dirt roads and one lane roads. Shaking my head freaking conservatives.

Moving I 59/20 would have been better; however that’s a 50 year old mistake, that would cost way too much money to correct so I think this was the only other solution. I will say it’s much more safe and traffic flows fairly well, even during rush hour.

Only an ALDOT engineer would think this is a good solution, What a wasted opportunity to really improve Birmingham's downtown, instead doubling down on a 50 year old mistake.
