That God Awful nunchucku scene at the end of the first with Splinter defeating Shredder's spear...was So Bad. Splinter's facial animation was ghastly too. Throughout the movie. I love the movie but it's full of directorial mistakes and the fight choreography is ....bland compared to anything made since. (for the most part)

Ninja Turtles II was the first Turtles movie I saw in the cinema - my parents actually let me and my sister go to a cinema and watch it, which was surprising, given the more adult tone of the first movie - I guess they didn't know anything about it. I was very disappointed by the ending - super Shredder killing himself was a terrible way to end it. I also didn't like vanilla ice and the dance number. I loved pretty much everything else - especially Ernie Reyes Jr. and that is because I was a huge fan of Sidekicks TV show, which he co stared - I immediately recognized his credit in the opening of the movie and I got excited - I love all of his scenes, he has more fight scenes than Turtles have in the movie, and he also has a great plot of sneaking into the ranks of the foot clan. Back then I didn't notice the toned down violence, but it was immediately obvious as soon as I re-watched the original movie on VHS - and this basically killed the sequel for me - I never watched it again, while I re-watched the original probably couple of dozens of times. I never saw the 3rd movie - I just lost interest in TMNT franchise altogether. The mid 90s were a terrible time for sequels - everything was made kid friendly, pg13 and devoid of any excitement. Such a waste.

The documentary Turtle Power is a really good watch. I couldn't wrap my head around how difficult it was to get funding for the Turtles movies considering it was a billion dollar commodity at the time and even though they basically had to scrape about nine million dollars for the first film and it was the biggest movie of that year, Turtles 2 still had to scrap a lot for "budgetary and time constraints." it's bonkers.

As a kid, I was the same way: liked part 2 better than 1, then got older and swapped my preference.
I had every single ninja turtle action figure and vehicle for the first few years they came out, including the squishy headed original turtles and Shredder. Once TMNT 2 came out, it was almost impossible to find Super Shredder in stores. My mom was a trooper though and found one someone had hidden in Toys R Us, on the very back of the shelf behind a crap ton of other figures.
She didn’t normally go out of her way to get toys, but my brother and I were bonkers for the turtles and, outside of holidays, we did all our chores on the farm to get our allowance, which allowed both of us to get a new turtle each week.
Before the turtles came along, we just had blocks of scrap wood that we had to pretend were Transformers or GI Joe. We didn’t have shit for toys, other than a few stuffed animals and a handful of He-Man figures. We just made do for the most part. I think she realized we were very keen to do our chores at the prospect of getting a new turtle, so it was just easier to keep us in line, as long as she had a carrot to dangle.
Certainly made holiday shopping easy for the most part. Just find anything ninja turtle and we’d be happy...lol...and now I’ve been able to share my turtle fun with my daughter and, at 5, she’s a fan too...of the older stuff.

I still say that the first one is the only good Turtles movie to date.

You’re correct for doing so. At 43, I own the first film. I saw the sequels new and never bothered watching either of them more than once. I’ve never even considered watching the Bay films.

I'd say you're being awfully nice even calling the first one good. The movie shat all over what the Turtles were meant to be.

Jeff Spain, That might make it a bad adaptation. It doesn’t make it a bad movie. For those who have no experience with the source material, it doesn’t matter.

Michelangelo's weaponized sausages paved the way for Blake Belladonna to do the same thing during RWBY's food fight.

31 y/o here, watched it a couple of months ago. I had to skip through certain parts of dialogue and story development but it was still fantastic to watch.
I really love the analysis towards the end, and throughout, that they missed the mark by toning down the violence. As someone who was born in '89 and grew up with a ton of 80s influences since I have a sister who is 6 years older than me, and a brother who is 4 years older than me, I got a lot of the hand me downs. And growing up I never could distinguish what it was that was particularly different about them(the 1st and 2nd TMNT live action movies), since the internet was still in development and the times were just different from the flow of instant access to endless information we have available today. But it really was the dark tone from the first one that keeps it relevant today. The Turtle's even went through existential crisis' and battled depression in the first movie when they lost Splinter like he was already dead. Raph goes looking for a fight as is his coping mechanism and stumbles across Casey Jones who easily had the popularity to return to this movie and could have played a relavant role to Keno and played the double agent line getting caught up by The Foot.
The second one obviously paces better, but that doesn't always make it a better movie, just easier to watch and digest. The second one has a lot of fantastic elements, but I'm left to wonder at 18:46 just how fucking cool that fight scene would have been, and just all the fight scenes and the overall intensity of the movie if it followed the first movie more thematically. When you said you should do right by your fans and ignore your critics, the example you gave is the one that has ever made the most sense to me. Its still a gem in my eyes, but I was also like ~5 the first time I watched it, but when I did watch it again I really enjoyed it for what it was, a well put together film that predates CGI and does fantastic with this element that was pretty much entirely experimental. But the lack of grit, violence, and a real sense of danger and possible defeat were missing from the second film. Because just about everything else was fantastic. Even April got so much cuter.
    Fantastic analysis

The first movie is brilliant. Even as a kid seeing all these new, I couldn’t stomach either sequel. I’ve never seen either of them more than once.

I like how you were able to see shredders helmet in the trash before his hand reveal. All in all, this movie was still awesome though!

Actually I have more info on the subplot on the revelation of the Ooze, yes we were going to get the Utrom but here's the rest of it.
You remember the end fight in which Kino kicks the canister of Ooze away from Shredder and Professor Jordan Perry just gets it and leaves? Well it was going to reveal in a scene in which he's in the restroom and he opens up his shirt and a brain creature is inside his chest cavity, revealing that Jordan Perry is actually a Utrom from Dimension X.
Heck when the Turtles are in TGRI (instead of TCRI from the comics) if you pay attention to the entire lab specifically the center piece that is a glass pyramid, you can already see a Utrom in there.
It's a shame that the subplot was not further explored because they thought it was "too weird", if you want to watch a video on the subject The Old Turtle Den did a video on the deleted subplot.

Yes this is accurate. I heard about that sometime ago but I'd forgotten till you just reminded me. I really wish they would have taken the time and made it the way they originally planned! How great that would have been!

@@jayfonz5765 Right?! Kids would be talking about that ending and would convince their friends to tell their parents to see this movie, that means a sequel with the Turtles in space would've been epic.

Hollywood criticizes anyone who they think should not make any money. They were pissed because all of their movies were not making the margins that this series did.
