- The Hyundai IONIQ is a line of cars that ranges from a conventional hybrid to a plug-in hybrid capable of 40km of electric range to a full electric vehicle with 200okm of range.
Competitors to the Hyundai IONIC compact hatchback are the Toyota Prius, the Prius Prime, Chevy Volt, Chevy Bolt, Nissan LEAF to name a few.

Proud of Hyundai and their remarkable achievements as a Korean.. seems like such a perfect package for Hybrid/EV-buyers.
Incredible effort from Hyundai. Hopefully this is the EV car that we see roaming the streets everywhere.

With the price of these models, I feel we'll start seeing these a lot more. Personally looking to get the Niro myself, waiting for it to be released next month.

I understand the EV can be ordered at any Hyundai dealer.
Unfortunately, the one I really wanted to see was the plug-in hybrid. I hope you get to test that soon as, for me at least, that's the one that gives the greatest flexibility; enough range for most urban commuting with the ability to do the occasional dash out of town without the range anxiety.

WOW, I saw one on the road today and the look is amazing .
Got the Hyundai hybrid Premium SE model recently. (2018 -UK) Loving it. Easily the best car I have ever had. Early days but averaging 62 mpg although I did have it in the sport mode a few times which makes it feel a different car again. Have to get used to a silent car on start up. Looks stunning in the platinum silver finish and much better looking than the Prius. Dual clutch automatic super smooth.
Unfortunately the Ioniq has a GDI engine which results in high emissions according to recent ecotests by the German Auto Club (ADAC). While Prius passed all tests with ease, Ioniq emitted 3-4 times the Euro6 limits for CO and particles. For fuel consumption, the Ioniq scored 5.1 l/100km vs 4.1 for the Prius. I preduct the GDI Ioniq with dual-clutch auto transmission will have worse reliability than the port-injected Prius with its eCVT. If you want a reliable, efficient car that is truly green, ignore the haters and buy a Prius.

47km in winter but since spring has sprung here in Ontario my brothers Phev Ionic is currently getting 60km electric with no babying or special driving, even on the highway. His current tank is looking to be 1950 km with nightly charging.
Wish you had spent more time on the EV, that's the one that will truly be relevant in the future. Specially since they plan over 200 miles of range for it next year.
Did he say the full electric version does not have independent rear suspension?

Paying delux for a hybrid and only gets 20km on electric. Should be like 50km if you gonna have some use of it.
I am curious about how the EV handles compared to the hybrid.
Plugin seems like the best of both worlds. It certainly looks better than the prius but is heavily inspired by the design.

This review was good but seriously biased towards the hybrid. The more desirable electric model was only given a mere mention at the end of the video, and it has plenty of power. No mention was made of the electric model being the most efficient production car available.

Considering the target is the Prius, would you say that even the electric Ioniq has a better ride?
The Hybrid will be the most popular though
T pure electric was exclusive to California or at least is starting that way...so the Hybrid is the mass market car for now
more competition in the hybrid and EV market is definitely a plus.
i actually really want an EV, but with their terrible resell value (the Ioniq being a Hyundai doesn't help), i will definitely wait few years, and buy one used.
You shouldn't buy these electric cars. You should always lease them. That's because EV's and battery technology are always getting better and better every year. You don't want to be stuck with an outdated car for the rest the car's life. After you lease them for 3 years, another set of more better and improved EV's are going to be offered.
i dunno why but any white car that has distinctive black outlines/trims on the exterior reminds me of storm troopers... same with a white audi a4 rear
Didn't see this in the comments - Ontario plates and test drive in BC. Did you drive the full electric model across Canada, and if so, how was the pace/charging opportunities, etc? Could you charge this at a Tesla super station? Is it compatible?
I'm pretty sure the EV and the plug in share the same non-independent rear suspension. But perhaps it differs by region.
I got no problem with electroc vehicles itself but it is not like there's a whole lot of electric fuel stations that standsout like gas stations...
How did the EV handle with the torsion rear suspension?

Has rear facing camera so no blind spot to worry about.
I'm referring to driving, not backing up. I prefer large window to get a better view of traffic around me.

Before buying a plug-in hybrid from Hyundai or Kia, ensure it has different parts charging the batteries than the 2016/2017 Hyundai Sonata Plug-In and 2017 Kia Optima Plug-In. I am fighting Hyundai to buy back my 2016 Sonata PHEV under the Lemon Law. It has spent a total of 50 days in the shop for failing to charge the batteries. Those 2 visits would have cost me $6,000 had it not been under warranty. And while the batteries are guaranteed the original owner as long as they own it, the PARTS that charge it are not!

The Bolt has the same stupid paddles for regenerative braking, which also somehow affects regular brakes, I almost got in an accident when I was test-driving the Bolt. In any case, gasoline cars with manual transmission do not have these paddles, but they can do engine braking. Want to coast? Keep the accelerator pedal in the middle, neither accelerate nor engine-brake. Same can be done with these electric cars. I think that these paddles only muddle things, it is like having both a gun and a taser, and you can confuse one for another, oops.
All EVs that I know of go to 100% DC fast charging, but they slow down after 80% and that's why they only state the time it takes to go to 80% and not to 100%. Tha Ioniq electric on the other hand only charges dc up to 94%, then it shutts off. Not possible to charge more. Dont really like it.
You also compare the ioniq and the bolt rangewise and are talking about twice the range on the bolt. That wont be the case in practice. The Bolt, on the highway at 110km/h will go probably a little bit longer than 300km and the Ioniq will go just below 200km. Far from twice the range.
You also talk about the feel of the hybrid vs the electric and say that you liked the hybrid better. I have also deriven both of them and I liked the electric a lot more. A weak reving engine is soo oldschool, didnt like the feel of it. The ioniq electric in power mode is awesome to drive though. But thats subjective though.

The only problem I see is with the high price of electricity in the province of Ontario because of our Liberal Government here, you'll spend $200 on gas at the pumps or $500 a month on hydro. Can't see any savings.

Top of the line ioniq EV,or entry level bolt. 200 km vs 400 km. Hyundai better hurry up with the new batteries for this car. Since bolt owners are hitting 300 miles(482km) already. I am going to make a wild prediction,Tesla said it's model 3 will have a range of 215 miles(approximately). No way in hell now.
The Bolt uses the LG batteries. Hyundai uses another set of batteries, but they are also LG batteries. By next year Hyundai promises to update their batteries. They'll probably purchase the same LG batteries that the Bolt uses.
No way in hell is Tesla producing any Model 3s. Promised 5,000 per week by now, only hand built 260 because Elon can't figure out how to build a production line and can't figure out hoe to make his welding robots product quality welds.
I would dip this car and put a wing on it with my Veloster turbo rims that would look good...not a big wing but yeah

200km EV range is a bit of concern when you have a long journey.
Ontario has >100 fast chargers in 2017, and that will double in 2018.
200 km battery charge. They need to start converting to mpg.

The title of the review says "plug in" only to find out you dont have access to one. What a joke.

Electricity is damn expensive in Ontario making this not worth while
Southern Ontario has as much sun as Spain, I'll have you know. That is what the solar expert told me when he checked out our roof for panels.
FALSE. Electricity in Ontario is super cheap in overnight period when most EV owners charge. We pay 13c/kWh (all in!) here in Toronto for our two EV's, and that is equivalent to paying $0.20/L for gas, EV is 4x cheaper to run!
