- This is a detailed description of my two “conventional” fly fishing kits for back country backpacking. I talk about the rods, reels, tools and flies. These fly fishing kits are light, versatile and effective!
Fantastic video my friend!
Thank you very much!
Finally someone that is light weight. Think I'm at 14oz for conventional. I use an ice fishing reel with half a dt 3 wt line. Also use a florescent light tube for added protection. I use a lanyard instead of a bag. Great setup. Time to make it lighter lol.
I’ve thought about switching to a light tube. Just haven’t looked into it more.
Big fan of both your channels and your presentations and adventures.
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching and the positive feedback!
@@juanbackpacks grew up hiking in the Sierra as a scout and still do.
Great video. I’m planning to thru hike the CT and want to bring a 3wt fly rod. Your video had just the right type of info I was looking for.
Thanks Adrian! Feel free to share this video with other that you know who might benefit from it… also, if there are any other topics around backpacking combined with fishing that you would like me to cover.. let me know. I’ve done a ton of back country fly fishing and I was actually a fishing guide for over a decade.
@@juanbackpacks thanks Juan. I live in Montana and am an experienced backpacker and angler. But, I def do not consider myself an ultralight backpacker. I’m very committed to thru hiking with a fly rod but do worry about weight considering the CT is a “long trail”. I enjoy your videos and will keep watching! Thanks again.
Very helpful video. I'm gonna work on backcountry trails for a month this summer in Yosemite, and Ill have time to fish lakes and streams. I haven't done too much fishing around Yosemite and was wondering if you had any specific tips?
They will take about any fly. That being said, size 12 Elk Hair Caddis have been a great producer for me in the Sierra. Most of the time it’s the only fly I use and I’ve always caught fish.
Good stuff Juan. Thank you
Thanks for the positive comment! Much appreciated. Hop the info was helpful.
Been waiting for this thanks!
Thanks for the comment! I hope you find the info helpful!
@@juanbackpacks sure is. All your presentations are informative and helpful. Just ask the 3 dragon tail rods I now have 🤣
Do you not use a landing net?
No landing net. Most fish are on the smaller side in the back country and if you smash down barbs its easy to unhook fish without even touching them.
@@juanbackpacks Makes sense. Thank you!
What do you do for water with this set up?
The 3 wt set up is for smaller size rivers and creeks. The 5 wt set up would be for bigger flows and lakes because it would work better at longer casting distances.
@@juanbackpacks sorry, I meant drinking water. How do you stay hydrated with this set up?
@@mlland67 I use a BeFree hollow filter to filer water from creeks and lakes. A also take a couple one liter bottles to store water in so I don’t have to filter all the time and I have water through dry areas of the trail…hope that answers your question. I have a video about the two water filters that I use.
