Redington really put some soul into these kits, love to see it. I often recommend people put together their own kits, and sometimes it puts them off a little. Having a usable kit on the market is going to bring so many new people into the sport, and keep them here.

By far the best discussion of fly fishing kits I’ve ever seen. As a 60 year veteran of fly fishing all over the US( 25 years, many rivers in Montana alone), in several other countries, in all kinds of waters from farm ponds to the pelagic, I am the owner of 20 plus fly fishing outfits from 8’4w to 10’12w in fiberglass, graphite, bamboo, etc. but I’m likely to buy one of the Redington kits just because your presentation is so convincing !

$359 for a setup DONE gets one out the door and on the water to find success. Putting one together by oneself costs FAR MORE and tests one's patience, mostly. I would pay this amount if I hadn't already paid a HECK of a lot more even shopping garage sales and this fly shop that sells garage sale fishing equipment. There are 'good' fly fishermen there to help a bit but this channel is saving me tons of money and saving me from reinventing the WHEEL if you get my drift...grins. Brian is my favorite fishing guru. Timing in life is everything...I was just talking with a friend whose teenage son wanted to learn how to fish, and he knows nothing about fishing. I told him getting a first fishing rig is similar to learning how to play guitar...if you get a cheap guitar that is hard to play, it usually discourages learning how to play it. One doesn't need to spend a grand on a first outfit, especially if you're not sure that they will continue with the sport, but getting something decent so the learning curve isn't painful or discouraging is important.

I'm basically completely new to fly fishing, and the learning curve is going to be steep, but with the help from Brian Flechsig I believe I'll become a decent fly fisherman with some patience and a lot of practice. I did buy a fly rod/reel from Academy 6 years ago or so, it was crap and I quickly went back to bait casters and spinners. Really am enjoying all the videos, the presentation, knowledge and no BS attitude is refreshing.

I received it today and immediately took it to the side yard and the difference between it and the "kit" my dumbass brother -in-law gave me was instantly noticeable. Two or three casts with it and I could easily make a 30 yard casts, after struggling with the cheap POS.. The fly line that comes with the kit seems to work like magic. Had a friend buy a fly fishing kit from Walmart because it was on clearance for like $10.
He came to me a few months later asking what line to put on it because his wife had been vacuuming and caught the tip of the line in the vacuum cleaner and chewed it all up.
So I gave him a Rio line I had taken off a reel to put a different line on and I said, "Here, try this."
Next time he seen me he said that it casts so different from the line that was on there. I just smiled and said wait until you cast with a quality rod.
Haven't had a chance to go fishing with him yet as he injured his hand last year and is just now getting to where he can fish again.

On the rod in front of the cork grip there will be a number printed, i.e. 890-4 which means; wt. 8 rod, 90 means a rod 9' long and 4 means 4 sections. In this case the rod takes an 8wt. fly line.

My old as set up, as in very old, but still looks new, is a Scott 9 ft 4 weight G904-46, or 4G-2467 2 piece rod and a Ross Cimarron 4 wt. I'm curious what you would l or should I replace it with? I find now a days the 4 piece rods are as you point out travel better in all respects and are as good or better than the historical 2 piece. I have a budget that allows me to go from just under 1k to a bit more. What might your recommendations be? Thanks You greatly once again for your giving us the breath of your experience. l for one can't say enough about what I've learned. I got a Cabela’s kit a number of years ago - 8 1/2’ Sweetwater rod 6-7 wt with 6wt weight forward line. Supposedly for trout and bass. Haven’t had a chance to use it as much as I hoped, but retired now and plan to use it more, here in the fly fishing meca of central Iowa😊. Still using the same line and backing it came with. This Redington kit sounds like it could be quite a step up from that. Based on the video I’m guessing the line the Cabela’s kit came with may be junk. Was wondering if I should just try new line on current rod, or get the Remington. Thoughts?

I wish I was seeing this a few months ago. I picked up and 8wt encounter for the tx inland flats and I was disappointed (more because I am accustomed to better equipment then anything the combo did). I am ordering a new line in hopes of an improvement but I am also considering a much higher quality rod before next season.

@@Madriveroutfitters thanks for the feedback and info. I did order a rio winter resfish line. I hope it's an improvement. As for the rod, I will be giving it (the entire combo once I can get it to cast) to someone that wants to start out. I plan on a new rig this spring. I am doing my research now trying to decide exactly what equipment I will buy.

Which of these kits would you recommend for someone who will spend most of their time on lakes in the southeast? The bass version is my first thought but I'll probably see more panfish like brim, bluegill & crappie and didn't want to overlook the trout version if that would be more appropriate for these.

If you know the name of the rod i.e. Sage, Redington, Orvis etc. just bring it to a local sport store and they will be able to research with their main companies. They will find the weight of the line for your rod. It will be important for you to know the nos. of section, the overall length of the rod , nos. of guides, colour of the rod etc. Good luck!
