Key Moment 4:38 - getting on foil in under 10 mph
I've been riding this setup most of the summer in winds under 10 mph. At 230lbs this was not possible with conventional gear. After a full season on the board I share my thoughts as well as actual video of what it looks like to sail in winds well below 10 mph. It's almost a different sport in these conditions. When it's really borderline, it's a bit like fishing. You hunt for a puff, catch it, pump the wing and foil to try to stitch rides together. It's no problem at all with a solid 8mph. This video is capturing the absolute minimum capability of the setup.

Got my 7'11" yesterday and pumped it up this morning. Seems nice. Can't wait to try it out.
Now this is real lightwind. Not Maui "lightwind".
😂
Greg you’re talkin’ to me. Thanks.
It's a really good combination
I am 85kg on that same style of board 7'6-100L and a 5'5m wingsail with a 1400cm2 frontwing and my thoughts and feelins are the same as yours, if it is 6knots I can go up on foil, I can stand up and taxi in literally 0 knots in a lull by gently using the tip of my wing to float and balance waiting for the take off gust. I think a bigger hand wing is non beneficial as the low end gained would be non significant while you would loose overall comfort while sailing and doing the tacks/gibes.
I completely agree. For me, it's also about keeping the wing dry and light. A bigger wing is more likely to get a little wet and not hover... and you're right, it's usually just too much wing once you're up on foil.
Great video.thanks Greg.
Are you familiar with bigger foil for those conditions? I am havier than you are.
Cheers
The 1550 leviathan is huge. They make a 1750, but I think it would have too much drag. Gong also makes some large foils. You should check them out too.
I'll just wait for a little more wind. That looks like too much work.
I’m on the hunt for the first foil board and the Hipe Cruzader keeps coming up. I know I know..I ough to get a big fat solid board and then sell it, but the thing is I am aiming for light wind winging simply because thats’s what I’ve got to work with most of the time. Training on my SUP with a centerboard has really been great fun and i have tackled a variety of conditions. I can balance in chop just fine, so the Hipe Cruzader may just work. Budget is a factor.
You can’t beat the budget factor. Flat water will make or break learning on this board.. that along with some wind. It is definitely hard to stand up on and almost impossible without some wind. You’ll see from this video that I only stand up if there is some wind to help provide support balance. A lot of people learning try to go out in little or no wind. You should set a minimum of about 10mph to even try. A good gauge for me is whether or not the wind will keep the wing supported and not touch the ground. You can do this from the beach. If the wing floats, you have enough… if it doesn’t, don’t try to go out. You’ll burn energy and not really learn a lot.
How much do you weigh? Choosing the right foil and wing size will make or break your learning too. I can you give you some advice in that if you’d like.
@@gregstrickland9667 Thanks. I have all the gear except the board. Checking in at 80kg. Unfortunately I have to sell some gear in order to be able to buy a board. The Naish S27 is the lowest price and best value so far. I WAS looking at a very inexpensive Gong inflatable but the trail went cold….
@@joshuasepe5598 they sell th direct from the factory. The 7’-6” would be perfect. www.gong-galaxy.com/en/product/gong-foil-board-cruzader-fsp-pro-2023/
@@joshuasepe5598 Cheap and great for light wind. the Hipe Cruzader seems the ticket.
Would you be better off using that larger wing and an even smaller foil with the same board in those exceptionally light conditions?
I'd go with the smaller wing over a smaller foil. A small wing is more controllable.
Nice! So are you happy with the gong crusader board? I'm 80kg which size do you recommend?
I love it. You can’t beat it for the price. At 80kg, I’d say go for the 7’-6”. The 7’-11” is more than enough for my 100kg

Hi, why not take an 8m2 wing for those conditions?
It’s actually too big. The 6 hovers nicely and doesn’t touch the water. Also, if the 8m gets wet, it gets too heavy. I have an 8m Strike too, but this setup actually works better with the 6. I would have never thought that. I was always on my 8m when winging on a traditional board.
Would you use knots or KM/H in windspeed
I always go with mph because it’s a unit of measure that’s easily relatable for me.
@@gregstrickland9667 your audience is not you, though.
@@TylerKaraszewski easy enough for anyone to Google convert to units they like.
