    a couple things to add:
    • in catching fire johanna says she has no one left that she loves, meaning that she was also seen as “desirable” but refused and one by one snow had her loved ones killed and she now has no one.
    • peeta and katniss’s relationship actually spared them from being trafficked as well

I have asked people this before, but is that thing about Johanna just an assumption fans made? It makes sense but there wasn’t a reason given to why she lost her family in the books at all but people say that as a fact.
Like Haymitch’s family was also killed off and wasn’t because he refuse to be sold, which means their families could be killed for a lot of reasons. Katniss even assumed when she shot the Apple in the first games at training that her family would be killed, the only reason that they weren’t was because that was private and there was no proof to the audience she did anything wrong.
Knowing how Johanna is, I feel like she also could’ve easily done and said something to piss then off that would get her family killed… idk, I understand why what people say as the reason makes sense, but I also don’t believe that Johanna would deliberately refuse and get her family killed like that after she hears the conditions about refusing. I know she’s harsh but I don’t see her as someone who would choose something that would get everyone she loves killed. It’s not like she wouldn’t believe the threat, they use Haymitch as proof

It is the best way to keep them in control, to give them trauma and destroy them in side so they never think they are able of more, just because they won. Also, if he used prostitution in one why not use it in all.
Second point, Haymitch did something wrong they day he won, it was because of how he won actually. So Snow had already something to punish him for. On the other hand Johanna was amazing in her games, and won fair and square (I mean in the Capitol´s mind, I am not saying Hamytich cheated, I love how smart he was). There is no record that she miss behaved in her games or after that.

Yeah, this is pretty weirdly shot in the movie, I don't know if I remember correctly in the books, but I'm fairly sure Katniss realises they are bombing something, then shoots the plane in retaliation, and then realises that what they were bombing was actually the hospital. Just an added line before the scene where she shoots the plane of "they're bombing something, we have to get to the plane," or them seeing the blast from the bomb or something to make it clear that she didn't drop a plane on a building full of people.

One thing that ticks me off - Peeta didn’t need a pardon. He committed no crimes. Calling for a ceasefire is not a crime, not in any civilization. He could not be considered a “traitor” to District 13, because he had never been a citizen of that district. Making political statements that the population disagrees with is not treason.

The books do go in to detail with how they were tortured in the capital. They left Annie alone because she never did anything and she was already pretty mentally broken. Joanna was tortured with water and I believe electricity. She has an intense fear of water after her rescue to the point where she doesn’t even shower. She mentioned that her and Peeta had adjoining cells an got very familiar with each other’s screams.
Another thing that’s not delved into too much (and will become relevant in the last movie) is how Gale is very skilled at traps. He wasn’t as good of a hunter like Katniss, but he was fantastic at snares and traps. He spends a lot of time with Beetee in 13 adapting snares and trapping techniques to human victims and situations.

    • @AnnekeOosterink
      @AnnekeOosterink Před 8 měsíci +24

Yeah, there is a throwaway line in a deleted scene where Gale talks about trapping animals to Beetee. I think they should have kept something like that in, not that line probably, because it's so vague, but something to show us Gale and Beetee start working together.
      [SPOILERS for Mockingjay part 2]
I always thought we needed to make Gale's stance on war crimes clear. The movies make us dislike Gale when he says he would never break under torture, but afaik that's not in the books. The books make us dislike Gale for designing bombs that kill first responders, so medics. Which is a war crime. He also shows he's totally cool with genocide when he wants to let an entire district suffocate to death in what's essentially a closed mine.
Katniss opposes him both times, which is a pretty clear sign they are not aligned in their values. She even says that that attitude makes anything allowed, even killing children to keep the districts in line.
I don't know why they decided to leave the bomb design scene out of the movies, because then the revelation at the end when Katniss asks if Prim died because of his bombs seems really weird and out of nowhere. If you haven't read the book that is such a weird question, and that whole conversation makes no sense. Like, why would she even ask that? It's such a non sequitur.
We need to know he actually did design those bombs, that Katniss opposes their use, and that Prim died from those bombs. Perhaps they were trying to keep Gale sympathetic for longer, or something, have him disparage Peeta, so Katniss could dislike him because of the whole love triangle thing, but in the books it was pretty clearly about ideological differences, Gale was willing to do anything and everything, including war crimes and genocide, in order to win, and Katniss was not.

      @theholyhorehay Před 8 měsíci +10

@@clover2739 omg I forgot about that! They don’t touch much on the Avoxes besides Pollux in the movies. But in the books Avoxes are a staple in the capitol and they are the wait staff for the tributes. Katniss recognizes one of the female Avoxes before her first games. Her and Gale had once seen 2 strangers in the forest outside of 12. They weren’t from their district and were clearly trying to escape the capital. A hovercraft appears and catches them and then years later she sees the woman waiting on her before her games. In the books, the peacekeepers are all pretty chill and even buy the illegal game that Katniss and Gale bring. But once the second book happens and the security cracks down, all the old peacekeepers are gone. When Katniss shows up for her second games Effie mentions that they got them a “matching set” of Avoxes. The original girl who was a red head, and one of the peacekeepers she was friendly with who was also a redhead. Peeta wouldn’t know the girl besides her being there before both games, but the peacekeeper from their district, he would know. So seeing them brutally killed in front of him is awful. Especially since it was probably implied that it was his and Katniss’s fault.

Nice job pointing out the fact that they leave out Peeta's prosthetic leg in the movie! One small point of clarification about Katniss being deaf though: she only lost hearing in one ear during the first Games, and afterward the Capitol fixed it up so she doesn't suffer from any hearing impairment during the later books. It was actually a major point at the end of the first book that the Capitol doctors wanted to perform further surgical alterations to Katniss' body after the Games so she didn't look so starved and thin. However, Haymitch intervened and stopped them. Cinna also specifically designed her costume for the post-Games interview to emphasize both her malnourishment and her youth, as another way to highlight the brutality of the Games.

  • @AnnekeOosterink
    @AnnekeOosterink Před 8 měsíci +70

The movie sort of glossed over Finnick's speech, so people don't immediately get what he's actually saying. You caught it, but lots of people miss it. Finnick is telling them about how Snow forced him into child prostitution. Finnick was trafficked as a child by Snow. He was 14 when he won. So... You know. We already knew the Capitol was terrible, but that just adds another layer of horror on top.
In the books Johanna had been tortured with water and probably also electricity. They don't ever mentioned it in the movies afaik, but in the books she has some pretty extensive PTSD from the torture (on top of the PTSD she probably already had from living in a dictatorship and being in the games) and can't really deal with water anymore.
In the books it's also made clear why the Capitol couldn't really destroy 13. They were supposedly the graphite miners, but in reality they were the nuclear bomb builders. They had nuclear weapons in their bunker. So yes, they were military, but mostly atom bombs. If the Capitol had started an actual outright war with 13, they feared mutual destruction.
There are several people from the Capitol who defected, the movie makers for example, Plutarch too. But the regular people generally don't know much. They are kept in the dark about the districts about as much as the people in the districts are kept in the dark about what's going on in the other districts.
In Catching Fire Katniss listens to the Capitol people who do her makeup for the TV show and the chariot ride etc. They are basically ignorant about anything going on. They talk about birthday parties and hair colours, while there is a rebellion going on, still small, but there. Katniss manages to make some deductions from their complaints about things that are hard to get. They talk about certain food items, or certain products they had to do without because of "storms" and Katniss is able to piece together which districts make those products, and which districts are probably rebelling.
Ceasar also makes some comments in the book about the children from the districts during the chariot ride, that they are really embodying their district's culture, when they get put in what's basically offensive and stereotypical costumes. The people in the Capitol don't actually know much about the districts, beyond what they produce. So Rue and Thresh get a "farmer's" costume, complete with denim dungarees and wheat ear head pieces. Katniss expects some kind of skimpy (which has all kinds of creepy connotations, knowing what the winner gets forced into) coal miner's get up like tributes before her in previous years.

The author Collins said that the inspiration for The Hunger Games came from channel surfing on television. On one channel she observed people competing on a reality show and on another she saw footage of the invasion of Iraq. The two "began to blur in this very unsettling way" and the idea for the book was formed.

    • @Nico6th
      @Nico6th Před 8 měsíci +11

I think it is very much possible that two or more people can have a similar idea for a story.
The problem here was, that the Japanese Battle Royal and Hunger Games Book 1 are very close in some aspects. Not just the "take children, make them fight and show it on television" thing. In both stories, the couple survives the games via a trick.
There are a lot of differences though.
Battle Royal has a lot more fleshed-out characters, while the tributes in Hunger Games barely get any screen time (even in the books). The couple in Battle Royal is actually in love. The whole political system in Battle Royal is more of an afterthought, the games don't necessarily have a political background. There was no war before and no rebellion after the games. Etc.
So while I can see some things that are very similar there is no denying that the world-building in Hunger Games is way more complex and mature. The Hunger Games used the games as a means to tell a bigger story.
So even if she had gotten some inspiration from Battle Royal she clearly turned it into something of her own.

I think it was just shot weird (or the filmmakers deviated from the books and intentionally led the audience to believe Katniss killed everyone in the hospital)
It looks like the planes were targetting katniss' group, they see this & run into the building for shelter then katniss realizes theyre *trying* to bomb the hospital.
It appears the hospital has not yet been bombed (or its the building on fire when she says "theyre targeting the hospital!") & THEN we see the planes circling back, katniss and gale shoot it down, the explosion causes that long tower to fall and it cuts to katniss looking upset and like she just realized the planes & long tower just crashed into the hospital bc of her arrow.
Due to Katniss being the hero in the movies, we assume she is the one to prevent the hospital from getting nuked instead of her knowing it already happened, preventing further damage & not yet emotionally reacting.
Even if it had been her "fault" I don't think its really her fault; she has no way of knowing where the plane would crash.

The reason we don't see things like Cinna's death or the combat scenes outside of District 13 is because the story is supposed to be told from Katniss' perspective. All of the books are written in first person present-tense, so it's like you're literally going thru what Katniss is going thru, as it's happening. You only know what she knows, and learn what she learns in real time. They had to add some extra scenes like the ones with the president & his granddaughter or the rebellion scenes just to give movie viewers a better perspective on the overall plot. But that's why some things are purposefully left off-screen. It's like we're stuck in 13 with her😢

That's what I'm hoping they don't change things too much with the prequel. I want to see it from Snows POV, it makes it more intriguing. From the trailer you can see they've added perspectives from Lucy's POV.

    • @melissamack333

@@CJ77777 tbh, I haven't read ABoS&S yet so take this w a grain of salt but from what I've heard, it looks like it's actually told in third-person??? With an emphasis on Snow obviously. & from the trailers it looks like they're going with a more objective way of telling the story, which checks out for the narrative style of the book. Like, we don't actually see much of Snow's or Lucy Gray's upbringing, I think the focus is more supposed to be about the corruption & how a man becomes a villain. And maybe we're not necessarily supposed to empathize with Snow the way we are with Katniss because they're very different people with very different motives, who have lived very different lives. 🤷🏻‍♀️ again, idk how it all plays out so correct me if I'm wrong, but the tonal shift seems very intentional to me. I see where you're coming from though! A movie from Snow's perspective would be bonkers

    • @CJ77777

@melissamack333 Read the book before the movie. Trust me. It is from Snow's POV just as The Hunger Games is from Katniss'. The only time we see or hear from Lucy in the books is when Snow is around her. SC said The Hunger Games is Katniss' story and the prequel is Snow's. The prequel explores nature vs nurture, and is another story crafted to describe the inner workings of war that SC likes to write about in her books. I don't want to say too much because it would spoil it, but I see the Hunger Games differently now I've read the prequel and see Snow in a whole new light...not a good one, obviously, but more developed. Like in The Hunger Games movie they had to show some scenes where Katniss wasn't involved and likely that had to happen in this movie as well, for content, as it might be a bit boring to just watch someone watch a screen. However, I love seeing it from Snow's POV in the books; there is that air of you don't know what is happening in the arena or other characters motivations so it further inflates this inner narrative that he has.

They didn’t shoot the hovercraft into the hospital. They bombed the hospital on the first pass. Katniss and Gale shot them down AFTER it had already been bombed. You can see the explosion and smoke rise up after the first pass. And it says it in the book as well. Watch the scene again and you’ll see. They couldn’t get there in time to stop the hovercraft before they bombed.

Y'all are killing me about these planes and the hospital. That hospital was already on fire (Katniss noticed they were targeting the hospital and turned to see the black smoke) before they even shot the red arrows. And then when they pull up at the actual wreckage of the building and start the propo, she's angry and blaming Snow. If she thought she'd had any blame in that, do you think she would've been on-screen? She would've lost her mind and gone into a guilt spiral and then probably end up doing something impulsive.

I once watched an interview where the author of the books mentioned the story of the Minotaur as a main inspiration for the books.
This story, an ancient Greek myth, is about a monster called the Minotaur (half human, half bull). There is a backstory on how that monster came into existence, but that's not important here. The monster was trapped in a giant Labyrinth on the Greek island Crete by its king, Minos. He had a son who went to Athens and died there in a fight. Minos blamed Athens for the death, went to war against it and won. In order to pay their debt and to satisfy the monster, the king issued an order: On a regular basis, Athens had to send 7 young girls and 7 young boys to Crete. There, they were brought to the Labyrinth. They had to go in and were left to die at the hands of the monster.
Years later, the Minotaur got defeated by Theseus (I think he was a prince of Athens or something like that) who had help from the king's daughter, Ariadne. She gave him a thread which helped him with the orientation in the Labyrinth. He defeated the monster and the tributes stopped.
I'm not sure if that last bit is important, but I believe there is a parallel with the sending the tributes because of a loss and them being sent to the Labyrinth to die on a regular basis and the specific number of tributes.

Katniss lost hearing in only one ear....I think the right....in the first movie. The movies actually leave out a lot of the intense physical wounds Katniss and Peeta endure, I assume to make it more family friendly.
The jacket did belong to Katniss' father.
President Snow purposefully left Victor's Village standing in District 12 to show Katniss his power. He also had a fresh white rose put in her house, every day? I think?, until she showed back up because he knew she would eventually return.
Keep in mind that when Finnick is making his speech about Snow and secrets, he says if you're desirable, you're sold off to people in the capital....for their pleasure of being with a Hunger Games winner...in whatever capacity. In Catching Fire, we learn that he was the youngest winner ever at 14. This has been happening to him since he was 14.
I personally say don't bother with Divergent. The first movie was actually a well done adaptation from the book, but in the second movie they went way off course from the story, creating something that didn't come from the book at all. And it's crazy because the second book is my favorite. Then they tried to do the whole split the final book into two movies. The first released in the theater. I never saw it because it looked like they were....*ahem* diverging....even further from the story, and then the final movie....I think it eventually released on some streaming service? The franchise was poorly handled after the first movie. If anything, read the books.
In contrast, I think this first movie, The Hunger Games, was just okay compared to the book. As Jane said, they left a lot out, and I get it. When you're adapting from book to screen things will get cut, things won't translate well, things will get changed. It wasn't bad, but not great. However, this franchise just continued to get better and better with every movie released, and now this franchise is one of my favorites, books and movies.

An interesting thing to note is that President Coin announces the pardons, but makes it clear that Katniss is the one who must kept her promises, thus telling everyone that it is Katniss who wants this. A good leader would have just said that the pardons would be applied after the fall of the capitol. Because of this, people will see that it is Katniss who is willing to find middle-ground and unity. Thus, moving more people to unconsciously side with Katniss and creating a division between Coin and her people.
    *spoiler*
Given everything else in this series, I would wager that Heavensbee suggested the wording to Coin. Rebellion was not Heavensbee's EndGame. When the series ends, Heavensbee has taken two federal governments of 13 states, united them into one, eliminated most major political figures of each state, destroyed all reasonable opposition to his rule, and got himself a ruler he could manipulate. And the only other person who could see how intricate his plan was Snow, who did so too late. Heavensbee is playing Chess when everyone else only knows checkers. Heavensbee is the Machiavelli of Panem.

Can someone correct me, but I feel like I recall that Annie had become selectively mute after her games, which I think lessened around people like Mags and Finnick, and I think one of the main words she said/says is "Finnick". Based on that, I don't think the Capitol could literally get anything out of her, nor use her like Peeta. My theory is that because Annie had become mentally and physically frail, it saved her from further trauma and torture while in capture.

One thing I hate about the movies is how they gloss over how utterly broken and traumatized Katniss is. The smell of roses alone sets off a panic response in her. In this movie after the bombing she just walked up to it and picked it up but in the books this sends her into a tailspin and eventually she becomes so hysterical she has to be sedated. And this happens many many times. After the events of the end of the book she goes MUTE for weeks on weeks. In the movies she just goes on, slightly wounded but she is 17 years old and the books made a great point of reminding us.

Ok, yes, Katniss did lose her hearing in 1 of her ears after setting off the explosion to destroy the sadistic groups supplies during her Hunger Games. She didn't anticipate how big of an explosion it was going to be. But, when she woke in the Capitol after winning , she could hear again. So, they were able to restore her hearing in her damaged ear. They were unable to save Peeta's leg so he got a prosthetic. She does not find out about his leg until they see each other @ the interview before being sent home. Finnick, the most popular of the victors, traded in secrets. Snow used him to gain info on his adversaries. The prequel coming has a young Snow. I have watched the trailer for it. I love these videos! Can't wait for part 2 and the prequel reactions! I subscribed because of this❤
Also, a few things since i just finished rereading mockingjay today: the movies fail to show katniss' inner monologue, obviously, and if you don't have the books fresh on ur mind or haven't read them, you don't realize everything that was going through her head. she hated being trapped in 13, felt like she was underground like her father when he died in the mines. when she went to twelve, she brought her father's jacket, the cat and gale got her the family's medicinal book in which katniss and peeta after the first games before the quarter quell paint flowers/plants in and all of it breaks katniss. you'll see in part two how peeta's recovery goes, but in the book katniss cannot bear being in thirteen and asks to get sent to 2 to be able to be away from peeta, away from everything that she feels is trapping her. but the horryfing things happening in war aren't that much better for her either. the deaths in the war were horrible during the books, i had to stopped reading. i also loved johanna and katniss' training for war in the books and johanna not being able to make it because she got flashbacks from water because she was tortured by being in water and electrocuted. they also didn't add betee making a trident for finnick which was really cool.
when the bombs were dropped and prim wasn't there katniss stayed at the doors and forced the guards to keep them open until gale and prim got there and then every family had a special place for them, but everyone started liking katniss more because of the cat game. they also had to stay for much longer than in the movies under there until they got out to make the propos.
a thing i liked the movies added was effie being in thirteen. in the books she is kept prisoner in the capitol and only appears in the end. but the movies add more depth to her character. anyway, in the book we also see more of gale's thinking and why katniss does what she does later on.
anyway i ranted too much but thank you for these videos! will be binge watching ur channel.

Actually, Snow left the Victor's village intact for a reason as a means to send a message. Katniss may have won the battle, but Snow intends to win the war she sparked.

FYI: The fighters Katniss shot down didn't land on the hospital. Nor did the smoke stack land on the hospital.

35:21 well capitol knows where the 13 district is. They bombed it during the last uprising remember and the underground part was there that time too. They know the coordinates.

Something to think about, the only reason Peeta and Katniss weren’t sold like that is because they had the whole star crossed lovers thing going on, they basically saved each other from that fate!

33:12 that's why they don't have ammo on themselves. It was one way trip and they didn't want to loose it that way. They won this battle whit group effort.

I’ve always thought Suzanne collins got the inspiration for the bombers carrying the bombs across the dam with like human shields from the story of the American flag and how our patriots of the past held the flag up by hand after Britain bombed it repeatedly. When one group of soldiers fell, another group picked the flag up again until the bombs stopped. We know from history tht sometimes people have to die in order to reach freedom. Just like Effie tells Katniss about Cinna knowing the risk of him involving himself in the revolution, just like all the civilians in the districts knew the risk. Freedom has a cost at the beginning of any movement.

Astounding!!! This reaction is priceless!!! While I do agree that the film is slow due to it being only the first half of the book, I think it’s nice that it has this pacing because it supposed to be I think a representation of what Finnic just told Katniss that it takes a person longer to put themselves mentally back together after they breakdown. So over the film you see her trying to adapt to life in District 13 as well as struggling with being the Mockingjay, her trauma, and trying to find a way to get Peta out of the Capitol. I was on the edge when I was waiting for you to see Peeta go berserk. And if you loved Philip Seymour as Plutarch, I must recommend his film with Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, Twister.

I know it’s not a prominent comment, but “Communism” is misrepresented in this video.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Peeta and Johanna actually tried to keep Annie as safe as they could while being imprisoned and tortured? Something like the pair of them distracted their captors so Annie suffered less?

I don't recall that being mentioned, the reason why Annie wasn't tortured was because she was already mentally broken, they couldn't do anything else, so peeta and Johanna were tortured but I don't remember them saying anything about protecting annie

The movie people feel it's based on is Battle Royale. It does have children fighting to the death in a sanctioned game, but the politics and metaphor is completely different.

I subbed a bit ago but just joined the Patreon after binging these reactions today. Absolutely incredible. About to binge some reactions on JV’s channel as well ❤ y’all have hearts of gold, it’s weird to say, but “hanging out” with y’all today has been really helpful for my anxiety. Thank you so much for that. Also! Idk if y’all ever would, but I think you’d really love the haunting of hill house, it really pulls at the heartstrings and evokes complex emotions and is a lil spooky too

The book is first person- from Katniss’s POV, so some of these scenes were just made up for the movie to show some other characters when Katniss wasn’t there.

This is definitely one of my favorite movies of all time. I'm one of those who's thankful for splitting the last book into two movies, because this one develops so well the emotional part of a war, how people transform because of it. I love how the peoples who are oppressed can be inspired to wake up and fight against injustice. At the end, we do have the power to change entire systems, but we don't believe it. It's too hard with the elites being so powerful, controling everything from the media to the armies. But still, people have the power and this movie shows us that.

I suppose one can see elements of _communism_ given the historical examples of communism we've had. But I cannot think of any country that has implemented _true communism._ And as there is a class system, this is certainly not communism.
*EDIT:* I realize this isn't a critical point. Just bouncing off your statement during *Snow's* speech at 10:06.

There‘s one thing i‘d love to see in a future movie which is the whole story of him having a granddaughter. Him having a granddaughter means that after lucy gray he got with someone else and also got at least one child. However this child is never mentioned in neither the books or the movies

Guys, Mahershala Ali is not an 'up-and-coming' actor. =D He has 2 Oscars (!), 1 Golden Globe and 1 Emmy Award, he's almost 'EGOT' at this point. He's one of the top Hollywood actors.

Can't wait to see you both react to the last movie and this one is a bit darker than the other ones. You both should start watching the Divergent series they are good movies as well. It's interesting that two actors from Game of thrones are in this one. Didn't know that Jennifer could sing until seeing these movies which is always interesting. Grate reaction as always.
