    I'm always surprised when folks complain about the torque of that ratchet. Power ratchets are not for breaking or tightening, you do those by hand, with the power mostly for running bolts/nuts up and down quickly. They are not impact driven (i.e. which would remove the reaction from your hands) as is that nut driver, so it would be a knuckle buster if the torque were any higher. I agree with that extendable flex head ratchet, use mine a lot, only switching to the regular ratchets when there are space constraints, like, master cylinders and under dash work. Almost never have to switch to 1/2 drive ratchet even on larger suspension bolts, axle nuts, now that's another story.

    I love my flex head ratchets. Mine are a little different (they swivel in the centre and can become like a straight vertical screw driver), but same idea in that they work with different angles. Well worth what I paid.

    You have your sockets upside down in your socket organizer. It seems counterintuitive but they fit better the other way. Took me a while to realize this myself. Not only do they fit better, but you will find it really handy when you are done with the socket to just place your ratchet head over the spot on the organizer and push the button to release the socket right down onto the stem.

    • @nabob14
      @nabob14 Před 6 lety +1

      rueliotube correct... sockets are upside down. The base of each spindle is sized to fit the corresponding socket... this helps keep them from moving around and helps prevent sockets from being placed in the wrong location

Lots of good little tips and I quite enjoy the Chrysler bashing if you are know how much we sank into these PoS. I like Toyota's too, our toyotas have all been comically cheap to drive and maintain. More money in pocket for the kid's future education.

I already have the Milwaukee 3/8" ratchet is a nice tool to have, for engine work and all of the above, I got mine off Amazon in separate orders too, 35 bucks for 2 batteries/charger and 95 bucks for the bare tool and I agree it's torque is lack luster, but then again I didn't buy it for its torque power I got it for convenience. I personally prefer the Harbor Freight Pittsburgh swivel head 3/8 ratchet. Although the quality of the build has gone down in recent years (plastic seems to be utilized in the mechanism), their ratchets can get the majority of the work done at any angle. There is a huge difference in the design of the head compared to flex head ratchets, and I implore you to investigate that for yourself.
    Also, I have a set of Stanley locking flex ratchet wrenches. Just like how you mention that a flex head ratchet that is flimsy can cause you more grievance, a locking flex ratchet wrench definitely comes in handy. I am intrigued by your recommendation of an offset, I'll be looking for a set of locking flex ratchet wrenches with the offset box

      This dude cheaps out on ratchets. You can get a 1/4", 3/8", AND a 1/2" ratchet on the "Professional" line from Harbor Freight for under $50. I've never broke one. Even if you do, they have lifetime warranties and will exchange it for a new one right there on the spot. They look good, I've never broken one or had an issue with any of mine that I bought a decade ago. I've put them through the ringer too using them professionally virtually everyday. Don't use reducing adapters either. They dont take much to break. A 3/8" are made the torque applied on a 3/8" ratchet. If you need to reduce down to use a 3/8", just buy a long handled 3/8" $20USD. Its something you buy once but have forever. Most of the time, you use it more than once. If he can afford to buy long handled ratcheting wrenches, there's no reason he can't afford long handled ratchets to do it right

    You are putting the sockets on in the wrong direction in the Hansen socket holder. The drive end should face up. Another great tip for these socket organizers is if you put the Deep Wells on the short pegs you can put one set of shallow sockets with the drive size up on the tall pigs ( I put 12 point sockets on the bottom) and 6 point sockets face up on top of the 12 point sockets save Room in the toolbox

    The Hanson socket organizers are okay, but the rods that ID and support the sockets break very easily. I gave up on them and now use magnetic trays or socket holders. They provide better support when moving them around, there's no breakage and it's easy to remove/reinstall sockets with one hand compared to using those thin rails socket sets come on. I use Mechanic's Time Savers (MTS), but there are several brands out there that would probably work fine, too.

      @stever5887 Před 5 lety

      Golo1949--Part of having a big hammer is knowing WHEN (and especially WHEN NOT) to use it. If something won't come off easily, first ask yourself "why?" and try to logically find a work-around. Check CZcams and other resources; maybe you missed a cotter pin, there's a bit of corrosion or something else equally basic. If you've exhausted all the possibilities, then use the extra force. Remember: With great power comes great responsibility (otherwise known as "You break it, you pay for it".).

    Its amazing how fast electronic tools become obsolete. There are far better impact or battery charged impact guns and ratchets now. The one thing I think that I should invest in is the swivel ratchets. Gearwrench has a nice of set swivel ratchets with all anvil sizes that I might add to my tool box. I'm not sure that I also need swivel wrenches because I already have ratcheting wrenches and with the addition of swivel ratchets I should be more just ok for DIY jobs. If I ever upgrade my ratcheting wrenches it will probably be with the SK X-Frame set that has over 200 tooth. It doesn't get better than that in terms of normal wrenches.

    As a DIYer, I've found that I could often get into tight spaces and remove fasteners with a stubby 3/8" ratchet. Especially useful for spark plugs, and you wouldn't need to have a flex-head to do it. The old-school flex-heads often didn't have locking positions, as the newer ones do. The texture you referred to on extensions is commonly known as "knurling", which I suspect you simply forgot in the heat of the moment. Happens to me all the time.

    Just so you know the milwaukee m12 ratchet does not say that it is an impact ratchet. So if you want an impact gun then go that route. Milwaukee makes a lot of different m18 as well as m12 impact guns made to break lose those bolts or nuts.

    I was wondering what would be some good options for an edc tool kit...I want the best 4 to 5 inch Cresent wrench and same size ratchet wrench strong enough to break a 50 to 100 lb. Bolt its gotta fit into a maxpedition gear beefy pocket organizer and its gotta have a good array of sockets that'll also fit

    I have a Milwaukee power drill that uses that same M12 battery, its got some balls for such a small drill. I'm not 100% sure but Im pretty sure it would have been able to get that hood latch bolt off

    If you already have the a Milwaukee ratchet and M12 2.0 battery why HF 1/4" impact? I mean it's ok for occasional use for homeowners but it won't last and corners are cut for both tool and battery at that price point. Look at the new Milwaukee 1/4" impact at 100 ft-lb, plenty of torque and will last in a work enviroment, 5 year tool warranty and 3 year battery.

      And falling backwards is an indication of a bad omen for having that HF impact. LOL.

    Surprisingly interesting video. Which brand of tools with reasonable price would you recommend? I prefer to pay a bit more for quality, than to buy cheap stuff again and again. And "Husky" which I use is just pice of crap.

  • @amarmot3635
    @amarmot3635 Před 6 lety +12

    The “texture” on the extensions is called knurling, and pronounced nerling.

    • @OCBircher
      @OCBircher Před 6 lety +5

      Yes, and the "knurling allows you to get better 'purchase' on the tool." (Shortest, most accurate way to state it!) Also, the extensions that are designed with a little free-play on the ends are technically called "wobble extensions", not swivel, so as not to be confused with true swivel extensions that have a u-joint on the end. Still, great vid.
