- I love using a tight line technique with a sighter and a small jig streamer during the winter. It's so versatile! You can lead it, strip it, twitch it, or go total dead-pan on the bottom.

That's a healthy looking fish at the end, almost like a steelhead. Although people joke on tenkara, I appreciate their simplicity. I grabbed some from the tenkara guys, which is the simplification of the carry. I used to carry a large Fishpond guide lumbar pack strapped with a bunch of unneeded accessories. Now I Marie Kondoed my gear, just carry 1 or 2 tippet spools and a single box of flies. Pretty much the same load out as the tenkara guys but for two handers in mind. I use Brook fly boxes, they are over built, but they are deep. My GF and I use short ~10' two handers all the time with underlineing the system. Essentially the rod is over powered for the line we cast. The rod is almost treated like it's in the hands one of those baitcaster guys. So I combined the mobility and simplicity of tenkara and the more aggressive casting like a baitcaster and do some crazy improvised casts. I just like to do them for fun.

Oh thanks, yes, he does a nice job. My older son is a year or two out from rowing boats, he's fine on the oars and knows the water. Just talking folks into fish takes some time.

That blue fly line on that reel looks damn fine Joe.
Oh thanks, that's a running line for spey rigs. 25# RIO Slick Shooter. I use it as a Euro line, but can attach a 175 grain Skagit head and turn my little tight line rod into a single spey cannon. Kind of fun.

I could care less about what other people say. I fish in saltwater in biscayne Bay Miami. Where people fish Cuban yoyo handlines. They catch more fish than rod and reels. Have fun doing what you do. I even fish live shrimp on a bobber and catch all sorts of fish. I don't waste energy on people that are not my family. Your video is so entertaining✌

I think this might be a great tactic for the walleye in the river where I live. I’m going to have to tie up some small jig streamers. I’m not sure which of my rods will work best, I don’t have a euro nymphing rod.
Give it a shot with what ya have, but the long delicate nature for handling light mono and contact fishing with these purpose built rods is a huge advantage. I have tried doing this with some of my finely built 9' 3 weights and they still don't see to have "the touch".
My son is a killer when it comes to streamer fishing and I’m pathetic. I’ll try some of your techniques the next time we get out and maybe I’ll surprise him!

Got me itching to go fishing sooner than late February! It's so fun to try to figure out where and on which side of the river you're fishing! I assumed there should be snow or ice around, although it has been pretty mild lately...what date was this filmed? I see that you've answered below what gloves you're wearing. Happy New Year! This video was filmed on 12/21 - this is a warm spell we are having. Sometimes we are in major ice flow.... other years we can get out there and take advantage of mild conditions. Look for temps that push 40 degrees during the day, and stay close to freezing or above at night for optimal conditions.

Great video. If you haven't used the mini jigs on your ESN then you're really missing out on the fun. Joe, how do you like that new Fishpond Nomad Canyon. I have the Emerger but really like the net opening shape of the Canyon. Any feedback? Thanks.
I love it except that it’s a little on the small side, fish at 18” plus don’t cooperate well. Especially when you catch as many hogs as I do 😂. Total joke. The Emerger is better for larger trout.
Awesome, thanks joe. How many times do you find you can re rig your nymph section before its time to tie up a new dropper rig? Provided the tippet isnt damaged by rocks and such. Also how much tippet do you keep between that tippet ring and the first dropper tag?
I find I can change to and from the nymph section about 1/2 a dozen times. I like 4 to 8 inches of tippet on the top nymph and 16 to 18 inches on the bottom one.
Joe. Question...Im assuming you feel the strike vs seeing your sighter move? The reason for the sighter im assuming is just to see where you line is at in the water? Is the sighter really necessary?
Both, but usually feeling it. The sighter tells you what the jig streamer is doing. Tapping the rocks, slowing down tells you its made contact with the bottom, and I can read my exact depth based on where the sighter is. For me, nearly essential. There are ways around it but for true "contact" fishing I would say it's essential. No reason not to have it.

Yes and yes. The Slick Shooter also acts as a running line if I throw a Skagit head on this rig.
If you think people get on you for Euro Nymphing try Tenkara and see what happens.
hhaahhaa, yea I've done that. I like my little Tenkara rod for backcountry streams. Nobody else seems to like it ahahaha.
I can't help but to notice the similarities between spin fishing and tight line nymphing. Hmm.
Yep a lot of similarities, they are both fishing. Weird that people can get self righteous about fishing. Fishing is for fun. We don’t need to fish for substance any longer. Do what you enjoy. It is really that simple.

Oh I hate to say it. Patagonia, they were a gift 10 years ago and are the best fishing glove I've used Totally fingerless, lined neoprene keeps your wrist and the backs of your hands supremely warm.
