now in the 90s is on! It's Friday again.
Bonk was such a cool character. I so wanted a tg 16 as a kid
Did you ever get one? It's a shame its US library was so limited considering how many games were released for it in Japan.
@@tempestfennac9687nope. I did get the mini though a few years ago
And The CunninLymguists are such a cool rap group too!
@@tempestfennac9687 Bonk's adventure is alvaible on PS3 PSN and there were bonk games for GB, NES and SNES.
I had one. Lemme tell ya, it commanded zero respect from the other kids. Can you believe I used to get made fun of for owning one?
Fun fact in Japan the Bonk games are called PC Genjin wich is a joke on the TurboGrafx 16s Japanese name PC Engine. In Japanese Genjin means Caveman. That is probably why the magazine was just keeping the same name.
I remember an aunt got me Taz in Escape from Mars for christmas and I think I only ever beat the game once but I can still, to this day, perfectly recall the noise of him spinning up and bouncing off of everything! It was such a heavy, plonky sound!
Glad to see this game getting the spotlight. I actually owned in my youth the TurboDuo and Bonk 3 CD for it. Loved it along with the other Bonk games. On my channel you'll actually find a TurboDuo episode with home video from when I was a kid playing this game. Thanks for this!
Get weird, Dylan. Roll with it. Embrace it. Become it. Binging Zelda sounds good
Everybody gets weird just by proximity with Jared Boyfarmer (translation of his name)
Power Quest is really good for a Game Boy fighting game. The ports of Mortal Kombat 2 and Street Fighter Alpha are also decent.
I had a lot of fun with Battle Arena Toshinden
The GB port of Street Fighter 2 is really good too.
Power Quest is the correct answer. It's the gb's pocket fighter.
Power Quest is great!
I did not even remember there being a Bonk 3. I remember playing the first two games on Turbographx cause my older brother bought the system just for Military Madness and I was looking for something to play on it myself...so Bonk was my go to franchise for the system. After that though, I kind of forgot he existed until stumbling onto Super Bonk on the SNES.
There were also a second SNES bonk game that didn't made it to the USA.
Wow. Never thought I would ever hear the Taz-Mania theme again. Thanks for bringing me back!
With the cold and rainy season approaching in my country, being wrapped in a blanket while watching tv and eating cereal is indeed the proper mood.
Holy crap, the nostalgia that hit me when I saw Taz eating a bird and falling over.....that's what I love about this show.
I would argue that Power Quest is not only a "decent" fighting game on the Game Boy (Color), but a pretty good one.
Glad I'm not the only person who heard Dylan ask about a good Game Boy fighting game, and immediately thought of Power Quest.
TG-16/PC Engine so underrated.
The instant I read the title of this episode, that theme song ran through my head. 80s and 90s theme songs were catchy as heck.
It's a shame that there ain't many more TG-16 games left. The console is seriously underrated and it's a shame that we're basically in the console's end game by this point.
ikr? wtf
The console's US library is awful honestly, I'm not surprised it bombed here. Unless you like shmups, the console's global library isn't that enticing either. It gets romanticized way too much. It's properly rated I feel
@@kyler247 It's the most classic type of console. While the Genesis and Super Nintendo tried to make more epic scope games, TG-16 generally stayed close to the Classic 8-Bit / Nintendo way of things. It's also the most arcade so it appeals to those looking for the best, basic games.
"End game"? What do you mean by that?
@@Chaos89P Like the last few games being released, all being months apart
Considering the abundance of licensed platformers out there, seeing SNES Taz-Mania being an Outrun-style game is honestly quite refreshing! And I really like Outrun so I wouldn't mind playing more of those kinds of games.
The génesis versión has more variety while the SNES version, while fun to play in short bursts, doesn't even has an ending.
You get an upvote just for being an OutRun fan. Literally my favorite videogame of all time.
@@valdenv It's a splendid classic for sure
Same about the Taz-Mania theme. And I remember not liking that show AT ALL, yet the song started playing in my head immediately.
MK2 on the Game Boy was pretty solid. It's short, but I enjoyed finding the tower.
Oh god I remember playing that Barney game and being so mad that there was literally no lose condition. Of course there wasn't, it was a babies' game, but god dammit I wanted THE CHALLENGE. I WANTED BARNEY THE DINOSAUR FOR THE SEGA GENESIS TO BE THE DARK SOULS OF BARNEY.
I remember picking it up in the store just out of curiosity, looking at the back of the packaging, and it proudly boasts "Barney never dies!" and I realized that's probably the only time the concept of death has ever been referred to in a piece of Barney media. in the negative, but still right there.
@@KairuHakubi that is hilarious
My favourite thing about the game is you can beat it without ever actually playing because barney moves on his own after some idling and you just need to get to the edge of each level to beat them. Pretty sure there's a speedrun category for it too.
@@TheWrathAbove that actually makes sense, I remember being forced to share the nintendo with little babies from time to time, people not understanding that this little nonverbal thing does not have a desire to play the game, and not caring that he's just sitting there til the time runs out and clapping as mario dies. If you were AIMING a game at the tot crowd, you'd want it to play itself. That's still one expensive fucking toy though.
I used to love playing Tazmania but on The Genesis Oh I miss Those Simpler Times
Taz's popularity even managed to get him a solo N64 game in 2000. Exclusively in Europe called Taz Express...he's a delivery boy and its remarkably unfun.
MK2 on the Gameboy is actually pretty decent for what it is.
I root for Power Quest, it is pretty good.
@@GamesAndAnimes Power Quest in GBC.
As somebody who owned both MKII and Power Quest in their GB prime... you're both wrong. Both those games sucked.
@@saskatoonguy This game can I play too.
I played Power Quest on my GB as a child and it was fun. Last time I played 3 years ago on my GameBoy-Player (GameCube adapter) and was still fun.
Also it's better as everything we could see on "The worst fighting game" series from Matt McMuscles.
Please never stop making this show. Pretty please?
I mean........at the very most it can only last 10 years, otherwise it won't be "Now in the NINETIES" anymore.
I think Bonk is a decent series from what i’ve played of it. I need to play more tbh
Jared goes down to Tazmania! Come to Tazmania! Fly to Tazmania! We mean you!
Great underrated series.
@@Invidente7 seriously, the rest of the 90s WB classics get so much attention, but Taz gets shafted. it was just as funny! just... ehh.. maybe a little more 'looneytunes'ish in format. Lots of "watch Taz chase a Kiwi bird around for minutes at a time with no dialogue but a bouncy custom music score" stuff. Hard to hold the attention now vs the sharper wit of Animaniacs.
Never apologize for the weirdness Editor Dylan ❤️ Im here for it every week
One of the better parts of my week lately
Bonk had NSMB and SPP mechanics (the Mega, Mini, and Anger power-ups) decades before those games.
POWERMONGER!
"OOGA-WHY-UH!" (I never knew what they were saying when you ordered them to gather together.) But dude -- the fact you could get Canons in a game with swords was so awesome to me.
It’s funny how Taz became one of the more popular Looney Tunes even though he appeared in very few original shorts, same with Marvin the Martian.
Hard to believe that Taz Mania on the SNES turned 30, a game i think i'm the only one that likes, got it when i was a kid and i still love it to this day, though i've got it used.
I remember renting Power Monger several times when i was 8 or 9. No instructions or guide, but somehow fumbled my way through several maps. I'll never forget the clock ticking in the background the entire time
Oh man, that Barney thing is certainly Nightmare fuel. I hope Dylan brings it up more than once.
The SNES version of Yoshi’s Cookie also has a puzzle mode and a better 2 player mode where you can choose characters to play as. Versus mode track C has always been a banger for me.
You sent me down the nostalgia rabbit hole with Taz escapes from Mars! i played the heck out of that game as a kid! Thanks!
Taz-Mania was one of my favorite cartoons as a kid. So cool to be reminded of that awesome theme song.
My grandma bought me a hip-hop Looney Tunes sweater back in the day. I loved that thing.
Taz is one of my favorite children's animated characters ever. I was never a Disney kid, but instead a Warner Bros./Looney Tunes kid. Still am.
I remember getting "Raging Fighter" along with my Game Boy and two other games just in time for Christmas: at that time, it was the best of the bunch and it looked and sounded incredible!
When I play it today, as I found a New Old Stock copy of the japanese version called "Outburst", it turns to be called more like "Raging Player" than "Raging Fighter": it controls stiffly, it's slow and unresponsive overall...but I still love it despite all those flaws. Hey, these are our childhood games, people! SImply, you can't hate them in any way.
I imagine most of us have those games. The games that are terrible, but we refuse to accept or recognize them as terrible because of our personal experiences with them growing up.
@@gurvmlk it may depends from the game, at the end. If a game sucks, I say it sucks and nothing more. Even nostalgia can't save us from those questionable experiences we grew up with. 😁
@@retrojoe85 That's true with some games, but not others. It really just depends on how bad the game is, and what makes it bad.
@@gurvmlk true! That's the real meaning of what I said some minutes ago, at the end! 😉
Letter to the editor. I adored your description of Yoshis cookie. Amazing. End message.
Taz is named Taz in a family of Tazmanian devils. Like a human being being named hum.
@2 Corinthians 4:7-11 Reminds me of those aliens who disguise themselves as "Hugh Mann"
8-bit - hokey and simple ... 16bit - exciting and detailed ...
modern - _"make purchase of the merchandise!"_
Cartoons were on fire in the late 80s and early 90s, thanks especially to Who Framed Roger Rabbit and all those historical documentaries about Looney Tunes on TV.
I miss Taz-mania. Still funny even now.
when someones droning on i still say "blah blah blah yackety smackety" at least once a day
I played TaMania for my SNES a lot back in the day. I didn't quite like the game but back then we didn't have millions of game available like nowadays kids, so I had to accept and embrace what I had. That was exactly the good thing of the 80s and 90s
We rented the Taz Mania SNES game when I was a kid. I still have trouble thinking that I didn't imagine the whole thing as some kind of fever dream since there was literally nothing to the game...ohhhh you're supposed to get the birds, that makes sense...
Taz Mania on the SNES looks like OutRun/Super Hang On without the vehicles.
I can see that. they are eerily similar, aren't they?
With the mention of Genesis Taz, we're finally reaching the era of games that I actually owned as a kid. Going to see a lot of titles I remember going forward.
Me before watching: I predict Editor Dylan will be on point this week! Me after watching & skipping to Editor Dylan: I am not disappointed & for the record Editor Dylan, YES! I am playing a good game this week: it's a little-known PlayStation 2 title called Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. Wait... is THPS3 a sports game?
XTREME Sports
Cringe.
@@Gameboy-Unboxings The only thing "cringe" here is you.
9:32 How could you miss out on the main difference between the SNES version and the previous ports of Yoshi's cookie. The puzzle mode is exclusive to the SNES version and it's a fun challenge.
Not to mention you could actually choose between different characters when you do the verses mode instead of just always being Mario against either Yoshi, princess, or Bowser. It even tells you what the attributes of each character is in the versus mode.
Oh yeah actually I played that Barney game on the Genesis. Rented it from Hollywood Video. I'm not even sure why I did I guess I was still young enough to still love watching Barney, but I had played other better video games like Super Mario World already and Sonic the Hedgehog. It's crazy how Barney was such a big deal in the '90s and now he's hardly around. At least as far as I know.
My new favorite CZcams show! ProJared and Editor Dillon are awsome!
In response to Editor Dylan's fighting Game Boy question, I had a bit of fun with the SGB version of Battle Arena Toshinden back in the day. That said, it isn't anything I'd want to revisit or play outside of the context of the era it existed in.
also i wanna say there was a good tmnt fighting game on gameboy? or at least.. surprisingly good?
@@KairuHakubi
You might be thinking of NES Tournament Fighters.
@@juststatedtheobvious9633 yeahhh maybe. that one was good, right? at least, weirdly good for being on NES...
I remember being a hugh fan of Taz as a kid. I drew the character all the time. I even still have some Taz toys and plushies from back then.
This really is a great series. Now in the 90's. Man, that is just a quality CZcams idea. And you guys execute it fantastically. Look forward to every Friday!
3:23 nice.
I owned the Barney game as a kid and would play it all the time. I remember showing the game to my cousin and telling her that the game would play itself. She was shocked when Barney started moving on his own.
Never played any of the Bonk games, but I do remember that Super Bonk video you did awhile back, Jared. Y'all should go check it out if you haven't already, random person scrolling down. I do remember my partner showing me that Barney game when we were just looking through his family's retro games and he said even his siblings thought that game was super lame when they were the appropriate age to play it. Apparently, they wanted young kids to feel like they "always win," so Barney will just wander off and find all the kids and presents for you and complete the stage if you idle at the beginning for long enough. Course, the end screens say "You've found 0 kids/presents" if you do this, so I don't know what the point was. Kids games were weird.
Once again, love this series, and thanks to everyone involved in making it.
The neck snap at the end of the Rapid-Fire Releases got me.
Hey Dylan, there were a few good fighting games on the Game Boy, but they came out near the end of its lifespan. All of them were by Takara. And all were ports. There was Samaurai Showdown, which had all the characters and a few bonus ones to boot, King of Fighters '95, which had a smaller Roster, but still had the 3 on 3 fighting, Wold Heroes Jet, which was pretty entertaining, and lastly Battle Arena Toshinden, a surprisingly robust port of the PS1 game that even added a few characters from the second game. They are all pretty entertaining and worth a playthrough.
As far as good fighters for the gameboy are concerned, look into the Takara done games from Battle Arena Toshinden to Samurai Showdown and such. They figured out giving the graphics a smaller look made the games run much better.
Was about to say that. There is also super chinese fighter gb and super chinese fighter EX.
Their Samurai Shodown with chibi fighters was awesome. Really impressive at the time.
Yep. Takara ruled fighting games on the Gameboy definitely!
@@sijrichters
They even made a good Transformers: Beast Wars game. And their chibi SamSho port has more playable characters than the NEO GEO original...hell, I even prefer Ukyo's stage music in the demake. It's like a slower, acid trippy Megaman.
Let's ignore the fact I let everyone know the best Gameboy fighter exists... Le sigh..
Am I the only one who saw the thumbnail and immediately started singing "Down in Taz-may-ni-a, come to Taz-may-ni-a"
The barney neck snap best thing I've seen all week
The day before my birthday. I would be 1 year old 30 years ago.
Always loved the Taz-Mania theme
"unless he appears on a pachinko machine or something"
**shots fired**
I quite liked the Killer Instinct & Battle Arena Toshinden for Gameboy, but I also haven't played them in years. Thanks for the reminder to pop them into the Super Gameboy one of these days.
As for Barney, my cousin & I rented it one weekend to see all the ways we could kill Barney... We were disappointed.
To answer editor Dylan's question about a decent fighting game on the Game Boy, yes. Well, Game Boy Color anyway. It's a while away for the Now in the 90s series but Power Quest came out in 1998 and it's pretty solid. Absolutely banger soundtrack for the system given its limitations too.
The Barney Hide and Seek game was perfectly fine for its target audience. A preschooler can play it by themselves and have fun doing so. That makes it pretty unique for its time.
I love this series Jared, you rock man. Much love from Canada.
I'm sorry
@@napoleonfeanor sorry for??
@@ScrubMyTub I thought Canadians always say sorry. It was just a joke about American Canada perceptions. In my country, there is no real Canadian people's stereotype. We just think about weather and wilderness.
Jared: ...for everything else, here's Editor Dylan.
CZcams: Nope, not until our ads end!
Me: SUSAN!!!!!!!
Next week's predictions without googling it;
Bad Ass Racing: Rock and Roll Racing.
An over looked platformer: I forget the name of this game but its on the SNES where essentially you're a shrunk down scientist and have to carry around items like thumbtacks and traverse large open stage areas of based off of common house rooms. If I remember correctly, the main character wears sun glasses and green jump suit so he looks reminiscent of Rad Spencer from Bionic Commando.
Cute Shoot Em Up without any spaceships: I believe he's referring to, I want say its called Magical Pop, or something along those lines. Either way I know its the most expensive game you can find on the Turbo Graphics 16.
That editing on the Barney segments was hilarious. GG, Dylan!
2:48 As you can basically always guess when it comes to Japanese stuff, his name was a pun: "PC Genjin". The related character "Zonk" was "PC Denjin"
Dylan was in top form this week. That Barney segment was funny AF.
I love this series
I lost my $hit when the neck cracked 11:37! That was totally unexpected and perfectly savage!
Seeing Jared do the Tazmania intro brought back childhood memories that where deeply buried in my consciousness. Use to watch that show all the time when I was a wee lad. People don't believe me that it even existed tho lol
Said in the prior review, but, Dylan didn't mention it, so here:
The big deal with the SNES version of _Yoshi's Cookie_ is the addition of *Puzzle Mode*
Mr. Editor sir, the Battle Arena Toshindin Game Boy port is a very good fighting game.
Holy Crap. I'm suddenly remembering Barney's Hide and Seek was both one of the first games I ever played, and the first game my parents ever rented for me.
"AnD RemEMbeR, i LoVE yOu."
Didn't think I'd see that old Barney game here. I remember loving it as a kid back in the day.
I still remember the animated series for Taz-Mania, where in certain episodes, you get to see the real Taz, an extremely intelligent character that just puts on an act, cause they're technically recording the episode in a studio. Was one of my favorite cartoons back in the days.
the description of Barney's Hide & Seek sound like it would be another mascot horror game
Murder Barney is a reboot I could get behind.
Don't force it to be a thing, but I like Dylan's dark interpretations of the Olympics and Barney. That Rhys-Wakefield guy who did Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey should do a Barney horror movie instead of the Teletubbies.
I never knew there was a Bonk 3! Crazy!
537 days until Donkey Kong Country...
We rented Yoshi Cookie... It was so boring that I played my own copy of Super Mario World after one hour...
My dad scolded me...
In terms of Dylan's question about fighting games on the Game Boy, I remember having a good time on Battle Crusher - It features chibi versions of characters from Ultraman/Kamen Rider/Mobile Suit Gundam and the controls were actually pretty decent and fit the conventions of fighting game fairly well.
You can really see how the TG16 was struggling to stay competitive by this point. Hudson messed up, waiting as long as they did to bring it to the US. If they'd gotten it out substantially ahead of the MD/Gen, it might have caught on like it did in Japan. But releasing head-to-head with the Genesis made it the weaker option by far, and it was utterly doomed once the SNES released.
Nintendo was doing its best to keep it out of the big stores. I remember having to go to this little hole-in-the-wall electronics shop just to find any games for it.
Damn that neck snap got me at the end 🤣
That dark Barney joke made me laugh, Jesus. 😂
6:37 when you mentioned Tasmania at the end of last week I had a feeling you were talking about the SNES game but I remembered that there was another Tasmanian devil game that came out so I actually didn't comment that but now I realize I should have. I remember a side-scrolling game with the Tasmanian devil which I think was the Genesis one that my older brothers played on Sega channel I think, but several years later I played Taz-Mania on SNES and yeah it's a bit to get used to it first but it's a pretty damn fun game. Quite satisfying to beat as well. I didn't realize it was based off of a show. I should have known that it was because a then friend of mine I knew in the 2000s had mentioned a show.
Greetings from Spain Nice video i love this stuff keep it up viva retro stuff🎉
That Barney neck snap was epic🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
I asked my parents to buy me Powermonger because it looked like Populous. I was not ready for the level of strategy needed. 😅
The problem with the 8-bit vs. 16-bit commercial is that the smaller sprites in Adventure Island/Wonder Boy on 8-bit consoles means that you have more time to react to what's coming towards you compared to the 16-bit versions, where the downside of larger sprites is that the visible area is zoomed in relative to the 8-bit version.
I played both 16-bit Taz-Mania games but I easily preferred the Genesis version since it looked more like a cartoon than the weird sorta Road Rash-looking SNES game.
TAZMANIA! Oh god, the memories; when I was a wee lil' lad, my autistic self just loved the spastic lil dude; Taz was a favorite of mine! Even now having moved up to high-functioning, I still relate to him since I have ADHD, am twitchy and love eating! XD
# 0001 You know you're a Fact Hunt fan whenever anyone mentions Peter Molyneux, you can't help but to giggle.
Just a little reminder that it was the mid-'90s by this point, just as it's now the mid-'20s.
I remember that Taz-Mania game, I had a copy of it as a kid (I might even still have it now). I don't really recall anything else about the game though, or if I enjoyed playing it. But I did love Looney Toons because of all the re-airing of the old cartoons and really loved Bugs Bunny, so my mom would get me all sorts of games or toys based on Bugs, and I guess at some point that game got mixed in with it.
Taz really was the voice of the 90s. I had a couple Taz hats. Probably the closest Looney Tunes ever came to being 'cool' at all..
Nothing is more 90s than getting grimdark about Barney. That was authentic.
