I’m gonna be honest, I love reading, but I am very VERY picky about what I read. I also agree with the sentiment that if you are forced to read something, it isn’t as fun as it would be to read it voluntarily. 😊
Agreed
Me too
same
To be honest that's with most things in life. There's a satisfaction to doing stuff like cleaning dishes or mopping the floor yourself that makes it feel like you are in control of your life. But then you're forced to and it can be a pain. Heck even learning by yourself can be fun.
Same XD. my accelerated reader teacher gave me a book and said to try that one instead of the ones I was in the middle of the series for and I took it and I read 1 page and already hated it.. she let me keep reading the ones I wanted

from my personal experience, reading is fun when it's of your own free will. i think the reason a lot of youth today don't like reading is because of schools. schools either assign books and you're forced to read them and then most likely write an essay on them, or they say to pick your own book but even still then you're being forced to read. if we encourage people to read out of their own free will, i think then more youth will get into reading. but of course this is based on my personal opinions / experiences.
And when we complain people say "you kids on your screens all day" or "why don't you read more? It's fun"
Jaiden * I don’t like reading and I have a cat allergy* ❤ love this your the best
my school made us keep a record of how much we read (page numbers, which book, short synopsis of what happened) and i LOATHED IT. it made every time i read something feel like a chore to the point i just stopped doing it because even when i wanted to read freely, id still have to make it into work because of the damn record
Yeah... I cheat on those.
At this point, I would've just burned all my books then and there
(except for you, Wings of Fire. You're an amazing book series)
Yeah I remember my middle school had a similar thing where you had to read 90/95 pages a week. I just straight up lied cuz they never bothered to check if we actually did or not
Dude. You could have just read two pages. And write down what the characters did. That’s what our teachers did in elementary school. Until I got to the 6th grade
@@xaviersaavedra7442 yeah i know. the point of the comment is that it made me not enjoy reading. i had to write it down EVERY time i read something, so if i read something for fun it turned into something id have to always write about after. making it no longer fun
If only schools would realize that people don’t like doing things when they’re forced to. I love writing, but if I have to write an essay, it’s going to be shit lmao
exactly lmao. i used to love writing but now when I pour my heart into an essay and get an 80 it makes me so unmotivated
ORCA OMG RIGHT! I love to write stuff but when having to write a essay on a specific thing I hate it, Id prefer is they did what my 7th grade reading teacher did and let us write a short story on what ever the heck we wanted
Sooo true
True, I love drawing but when the art teacher asks me to draw something it turns out like poop and I hate it.
I remember being so frustrated doing creative writing assignments because it’s *creative writing*, I’m supposed to *enjoy* it, but when it’s an assignment I just worry and think it sounds terrible and all that. In fact, a writing workshop about depth about caused me to not like writing short stories anymore because now I never feel like it’s good enough! Yay?
I would just like to say, I feel the pain of hating reading because of school. I just very recently started reading again, mostly to develop an attention span again, but I stopped reading in high school and most of college because school took all the joy out of books. I've only very recently started it again, and it's been fun. But the second someone forces me to read I will abandon all hope of literature again for the sake of spite.
Reading is nothing but staring at a dead tree and hallucinating

That's me with manga. Read all of Beastars and they're still wolf boy, bunny girl and deer guy in my brain.
I actually felt really similar about this. I love reading fiction novels, but the more people force me to try to read them, the less I want to and I eventually end up not reading at all. I think it’s wonderful that people are trying to encourage reading (I wouldn’t mind if they did a bit more of that now) but if they continue forcing kids to read books they don’t enjoy, they’ll stop it altogether. It’s one of the reasons I hate reading nonfiction books, my teachers always forced me to read them growing up.
Relatable!
As an adult, looking back, I may have had a case of ADHD, so whenever I was forced to read I'd get bored and my mind would just start wondering off...

Funny comment. Like
But now we have online classes
This resonates so strongly with me, I once liked reading, but having to do English and literature at school has just ruined my relationship with reading, I can't shake my feelings of reading being dry, boring and having to think of the deeper meaning (instead of just enjoying the book). I'm now doing A levels so don't have to do English or write essays on it ever again (I hate writing, especially essays) and I'm so happy to finally see the back of it, having to memorize quotes and contextual points from 15 different poems was the bane of my life. Reading is fun until you need to do it, same thing with a few other things (example)
My mom bought a trampoline one summer, and baby grand piano that autumn.
I would go and play the piano randomly, and just play a few songs by ear, which turned out pretty decent, and my parents heard this. They also got to see how much fun me and my sisters had on that trampoline.
So, instead of leaving me to enjoy it, they made the rule that I need to spend at least an _hour_ every day playing piano, and they would make me and my sisters go on the trampoline every once in a while, even if we were busy.
You can't expect a kid who randomly plays a few notes for like, 8 minutes to now be able to sit down for an hour and play a masterpiece

For me, my apathy toward reading didn't hit me hard until High School. The reason why my apathy hit me there and not in Middle School like most people is because in Middle School they still had some book series that I enjoyed from Elementary School. Those books are Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Big Nate. During Middle School, I was introduced to comic strip compilations like Calvin and Hobbes and Mutts and I was also introduced to the Dog Man books by the creator of Captain Underpants, Dav Pilkey. So while I was raised to old-time books during my Middle School years and my time spent reading did take a bit of a backseat during that time, At least in Middle School the magic of reading still lived on for me, even if it did take a bit of a backseat. High School, on the other hand, was when the magic was just GONE for me. The books that I liked reading in Middle School were gone, the books recommended by the school librarian were just melodramas or plain dramas, books felt a bit too layered for my liking, and I was spending way too much time either watching CZcams or doing something else. While I did read some good books during my High School years, most prominently the Bone books by Jeff Smith and "Me, Earl, and The Dying Girl" by Jesse Andrews, and "El Deafo" by Cece Bell, The Magic of reading for me died during my High School years.

Since elementary school, I've always loved reading books and novels. I could spend the entire day just reading book after book, and would read and re-read my favorite stories.
But when I started high school, I was forced to read the inch-thick, brick-heavy, ridiculously expensive textbooks with no time to read my own books. As time went on, it made me begin resent reading as a whole, and i read less and less, until I barely touched anything book-related when I didn't have to.
Even worse, my kindle broke down, and that was where I stored almost all of my favorite books, and it really put me off reading for quite a while. (I wasn't keen to get a new one because I didn't want to distract myself from my studies).
But today, I have just finished my IGCSEs and I hope to pick my old hobby back up, now that it no longer feels like a chore.

Not even always boring stuff, it was just boring at the time because it was forced on us (or in some cases, beyond our level lol). Sometimes if you go back and read it on your own terms, you'll actually like it.
It's because then, you don't have to think too hard about every little thing happening in the book, you don't have to rote memorize the 'key points,' you can just sit back and go at your own pace. Turns out, you can get WAY more immersed in a book when you aren't treating it like a test.

Jaiden: says she doesn’t like books
Her nerd fans: *Gone. Reduced to atoms.*
They didn't watch the vid then. She used to, but being forced to turned her away. I resonate with her sentiment.
Some people have this superpower called "respecting other people's opinions even when you don't agree with them"
Get the joke all the boomer dudes that will reply to this.
@@sto-humanfriendly r/woooosh.
Tamara Stroyan, I’m not saying this is me. I think it would be ridiculous to unsubscribe from somebody just because of their opinion, and I totally get her point of view.
Jaiden: “I’m not really a big music person...”
Me: **drops phone in shock**
Me, a band geek: *faints*
Oh calm down there bear furs
So.... ur a furry? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

U ever heard of LoTR
When she said "to kill a Mocking bird" it got me excited suddenly, all just because i had a book that has a title named that? And i didnt even enjoy reading it.
There’s actually an article called How Teachers Make Children Hate Reading by John Holt that basically describes the exact same thing you are. He says stuff about like how the way that schools force you to look up random words or references in books makes you hate reading. i mean when people actually read for fun they don’t look up every word they don’t know or look into the symbolism.
Anyways, all you need to get into reading is a book series that you really enjoy. and since you know people who can give you suggestions that makes it easier. you’re probably never gonna see this but it’s whatever
I do want to encourage everyone to give reading another try. Even during quarantine your local library likely has free audiobooks and ebooks for you to sort through and get directly on your phone/computer/tablet. You can browse vast selections and pick books that appeal to you. It's easy if you model it after the type of movies, shows, or video game stories you like most.
There's always a book for everyone, fiction or nonfiction. I hope you all give it another shot!
SO TRUE
There's also a whole thing where the style that took over most of american literature pushed "show don't tell" so much that symbolism got real subtle and harder to identify. Possibly as the result of a CIA plot to make it harder for subversive ideology to spread
Jaiden: "ASPARAGUS!"
English Teacher: Interesting reaction, but what does it mean?
Nigga
@@mrcreepmcpasta2959 NOT THE N WORD!!!
@@rychu8546 >:)
The natural reaction to say "ASPARAGUS" means that this vegetable has somehow been implanted into the charachter mind so it would be a natural reaction
Maybe she was starved and could only eat ASPARAGUS?
Ah yes, ASPARAGUS! An Unus Annus safe word.
I think if youre listening to music while working or drawing it has to be music you can truly enjoy. music that makes you happy. it doesnt have to interfere with work if its not calm or ambience or something. just listen and vibe while doing what you love.
Jaiden dosen't like music. ENTIRETY OF THE PLANET is baffled
Jaiden: THATS WHY SCHOOL SHOULD DIE

when i was younger, in elementary school, we had reading logs. i HATED doing those. my parents would force me to read when i really didn’t want to.
they didn’t want me to grow up hating reading, so eventually they just stopped forcing me and started faking filling out my reading logs so that my grade wouldn’t suffer and i could still go outside for the extra recess that we would get when we got the required amount of minutes.
anyway, because they stopped forcing me, i’ve grown up to love reading, writing and english as a subject overall so i think they did good😭👍
