  • Come join us for a tour of Brookgreen Gardens near Myrtle Beach, SC. Brookgreen Gardens is a 2,500 acre park named one of the to 10 botanical gardens in the US. In addition to botanical gardens, it boasts a collection of over 500 sculptures and 2700 works of art, as well as a zoo for animals that cannot survive on their own, and a boat ride.
Brookgreen Gardens is part of a massive 9000 acre estate originally owned by Archer Huntington, a famous 19th century philanthropist, who bought the property to provide for a winter haven for his wife Anna, who had tuberculosis.
Anna Huntington was a famous early 20th century American sculptor, who gained her fame during a time when very few women were successful artists.
The property went all the way to the beach, where they built their winter home named Atalaya castle. Atalaya castle was designed to pattern the early architecture of the Spanish Mediterranean Coast, and its name actually means "watchtower".
Atalaya castle now is part of the Huntington Beach State Park, where we camped with our RV. The state of SC actually leases the property from the current owners of the estate, and provides access for visitors to tour the castle.
In this video, we give a walking tour of both Brookgreen Gardens and Atalaya castle, and show excerpts from our related videos of Murrell's Inlet, Barefoot Landing, Hunting Beach State Park and Apache Family Campground.

Nice video. You got one part a little off...Brookgreen Gardens is located north of Pawleys Island and south of Murrells Inlet, not in it. The pontoon boat tour is very enjoyable and quite educational, taking riders along the canals and river, speaking about the early days of rice production and how the African architects engineered the fields to control the water needed for growing. Also, you didn't mention that there is a lovely restaurant open for lunch, an indoor art museum, and a gift shop, of course. We find there is always more to explore. Brookgreen closes at 5:00 p.m., so go earlier in the day. You can spend hours and not see everything.

You should try First Landing State Park in Virginia. It is truly beautiful. Riley will love it.
