I live here in Pawleys. My family dates back to the 1600s here. Siau bridges in Georgetown are named after my great grandfather. My mom had stories from the area! She also remembered being a girl scout and they spent the night at Atalaya when the rooms were being lived in. It's a cool "castle by the beach". Great little festivals there too
I was just doing a little research on the Huntington family. Archer Huntington was the son of the Huntingtons that built the Huntington Library in San Marino, California. One of my favorite places to visit..which means that both Huntington beaches were started by the same family. Great video, Adam.

My wife and I were there several years ago. You can take a ride on a poontoon boat out into the marsh and see gators and wildlife. The most fascinating thing about that is that they have a bird there that will fly into a birdhouse at 90mph and stop before it hits the back of the house. The birdhouse is six inches deep. Incredible!!!!
Wow this is absolutely a hidden gem I had no idea this was even there now I do have to go back to South Carolina not just for Zaxby's but definitely Myrtle Beach and not for the beach that sculpture exhibit, the castle, the gardens those mossy oaks are right out of a movie just absolutely breathtaking. Thank you so much for this it was very nostalgic you could feel the energy of the past as you walked through the castle and it was so amazing and then to match up the photographs follow that up with the sculptures just absolutely stunning I had no idea she was such a great artist especially using aluminum to sculpt with I had no idea you could do that! Totally epic Adam and thank you thank you thank you! ❤️
We used to live a few miles from there for many years. As kids, we used that place to play "Hide and Go Seek" for hours while my parents were fishing on the beach. That was so fun. It was wide open with no people around or any supervision from anybody. It didn't cost anything to get in there..... You could just run through the rooms all day long chasing other kids until you couldn't run anymore. .... It was great. :)
I love both the castle and the gardens. One of my favorite memories of my late husband was walking the gardens when we were dating.💖 The smaller sculptures were usually prototypes for larger commissions for sale or display elsewhere.
Wow, she was excellent. The sculptures are lovely. And mind boggling that her husband oversaw the build of the castle without any definitive plans. They must have been an intriguing pair.
Really enjoyed the tour Adam! I have photos of my brother and myself with our father (taken by our mother) at Brookgreen Gardens back in 1951. I took my youngest son when he was about the same age in 1987. We went with a friend and her little son, camped out at Huntington Beach, then toured Brookgreen and watched an outdoor orchestral concert in the afternoon. Now you have made me want to return-with grandchildren this time. Take care and look forward to your next adventure.

What a remarkable woman, Anna Huntington was. Even with tuberculosis, she lived to be 97. I love her statue (Young Abe Lincoln on Horseback) at the age of 90. Wow, great video Adam.
I'm guessing that the brick/concrete covered ramp was for her...maybe later years when, due to the tuberculosis, she became wheelchair bound. The fireplaces are cool! We have to remember, they didn't have central air/heat...Lol! Just imagine the amount of wood that would need cut each day/week/month? Wow! Greetings from Huntington Beach Ca. Sad you are outta here...but, love that you have returned to what got me hooked on your channel. I give this a big thumbs up to let you know I care!
My wife and I were there in 2015 took the pontoon boat ride and learned about the rice farming which is what the gardens originally was three rice farms. We also took the overland tour they take you back into the original untouched areas showing you where one of the houses was on the River side of the property, and back to a large smokestack which was used during the processing of the rice and for navigation back in the day also. They bought the properties to preserve the history of the rice farming in that area.
So many rooms, kinda like a maze, obviously wealthy folk, well i had to do a bit of googling, didn't what shucking oysters was, but now i know 😊, those sculptures were huge, bird sounds and the ocean waves 👍🏻, Thankyou Adam loved the vlog, quite the pose you have there lol
We use the phrase “ Living high on the hog” here in Southeastern Kentucky too. I agree with you history is fascinating! Thank you for sharing! Much love from Kentucky.💙

Video had special meaning for me as our family has visited Brookgreen for decades. Some of our family live in Myrtle Beach. I am from Concord, NC. Brookgreen was our mother's favorite place in the world. She passed away in 2020 and when you walked up to the visitor's center it brought back SO many memories! Thank you! Love the video!

My uncle had custom showers and tall ceilings. My uncle and aunt and four sons we're all 6 feet four to 6 feet seven. My Dad was 5 feet 11.He was called the shrimp.

We camp here every Labor Day weekend with my friends from high school. We get camper spots side by side and across the street from each other. I absolutely love it. It’s natural and not all built up with hotels and motels like the rest of the Grand Strand.

It would have been interesting to see this place in its heyday. At the risk of being somewhat of a downer, I have to admit that it has a prison-like vibe today -- with all its concrete and barred windows, even a watchtower in the yard. Weird. But still intriguing. Thanks much for showing this unusual structure to all of us today, Adam. Stay safe.
One of my favorite places to visit. I have not been there in over 20 years and it is nice to see how much better it looks. Did they tell you the tower was use during WW2 as a lookout for U boats. Also, the ramps were for moving her sculptures in and out of the house. At Brookgreen the sculptures in water, the water is still with a dark bottom to create a more dramatic reflection. At night, they are breath taking. The gardens were former rice plantations and the live oak allee (pronounced "a-lay") lead to the plantation house. Also, fun note, if you come back at night you can only go a little way into the gardens, because of alligators!!
Was there 5 years ago and really enjoyed the whole park and castle. The park is one of the biggest attractions for birders in SC with a huge variety including bald eagles. Loved the video! Thanks
next time you are back in cali , go to hearst castle. The five main structures of Hearst Castle include 56 bedrooms, 61 bathrooms, 19 sitting rooms and 41 fireplaces. Most of Hearst Castle was built around the ceiling and fireplace collection of Hearst.

I love Huntington Beach. It is like the old beach areas in SC before they built the mansions on top of the beach. The largest beach area around. It used to be just small summer houses that they did not care if they blew away during a storm. I always took our family there. Atalaya is something we always looked at from the outside parking lot. Whow what a "Castle", love the brick and that they had dogs and horses and she nursed a horse back to health. Certainly $2.00 needs to be upped and the $20 for the gardens/sculptures was not bad either.
I went here a few years ago on Spring break and this place is soo awesome to visit. I loved going into each of the rooms and imagining what life was like there. I didnt take lots of video but took tons of photos and my thumbnail was actually taken in front of that big green door. Thank you for doing such a detailed tour of the property!
Adam, very enjoyable visit and commentary. Brookgreen is a favorite spot. We visited many many time in the past 50 years. Unfortunately, probably due to the time and weather you really shortchanged that wonderful place. The visit to Atalaya was very in-depth and enjoyable. Anybody visiting the Grand Strand or the Hammock Coast needs dedicate a day or more for a visit to these sites.

Due to storms and coastal flooding the brick was necessary at that time.
