Aldborough Roman Town Tour English Heritage Site - Yorkshire - Roman Britain History

Aldborough in North Yorkshire was a significant Roman Town during the Roman occupation of Britain. My film takes you on a tour around the English Heritage site as we visit the remains of the Roman Town.

Roman Britain History Bit:
The Romans invaded Britain in AD 43. Roman Britain was the territory that became the Roman province of Britannia after the forty-year long Roman conquest of Britain, which consisted of a large part of the island of Great Britain.
Aldborough was a significant town under Roman rule. Before the Roman invasion the Brigantes tribe lived and controlled this area. The Brigantes were ruled by Queen Cartimandua and the tribe allied themselves to Rome.In AD57 she left her husband for her armour-bearer. Her husband, Ventulius, led an uprising against her. The Romans supported Cartimandua and sent the Ninth Legion. She fled in AD 69 when Ventilius defeated her and the Brigantes, now led by Ventulius, were opposed to the Roman occupation. Vespasian’s army conquered the area by Quintus Petillius Cerealis, who was based at York, the Romans key base in the north.
Aldborough started as an important Roman military and communication hub later it became a Roman town and a centre for civil administration in the second century. The Roman town was called Isurium Brigantum and had a forum and an ampitheatre.
Visiting Roman Aldborough
Today the compact English Heritage site covers only the south western part of the Roman town wall of which only traces remain. The site has a museum which contains a number of interesting finds from across the Roman town that provide clues about the town’s Roman past and its inhabitants. The museum has been updated and improved since our visit.

Between April and the end of September the site is only open Friday - Sunday and Bank Holidays.

The Roman re-enactors featured in this film include the excellent Ermine Street Guard who put on displays throughout the year at various Roman sites and are well worth going to see them in action.
