What a wonderful story. I enjoyed it immensely. I was taught to always do your best no matter the job. Society always thinks that six figures makes you better. They just have more prestige. It doesn't make them better than a janitor or cafeteria worker. We all have our place.
Karen and her family only (still) care backstory. None of them have changed until the end, but I respect Alan for forgiven and not getting back with Karen in this story through and through.
Somehow, I have my doubts they still DID learn. These people from high society have a deep-seated belief that they are better than everyone else, that it oftentimes takes a serious fall from grace for them to take these things more seriously.
I was on Alan's side until his refusal to reconcile with Karen and her family, at which point I shifted to their side. Had I been Alan, I would have revealed the CEO part right from the beginning.
So you shifted to the people who unfairly judged him and the woman who just left him there with her parents instead of talking things out with him? They didn't even let him explain himself. And she just up and left. He doesn't owe any of them a second chance. They didn't give him a first chance, so they don't get a second. I don't know why you would back a dead horse, but that's on you.
