  • Convergence Insufficiency is present in 1 out of 2 people with concussion and is a common eye movement dysfunction that impacts a person’s ability to read comfortably. Dr. Alvarez and her team are developing virtual reality video games as a form of therapeutic intervention to rehabilitate patients especially children to improve vision function which improves their ability to read.
Tara Alvarez, PhD, professor of biomedical engineering, is conducting neuroscience research that could help stroke victims recover their vision but also lead to diagnosis of other visual diseases. Alvarez seeks to understand how the brain learns when visually locating objects in three-dimensional (3D) space. Understanding the learning strategies that the human brain uses to control eye movement will also yield insight into the general problem of motor learning. Her research will lead to a better understanding of basic motor control and also discover how dysfunctions in the eyes’ three-dimensional tracking system affect motor learning. In 2005, the National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded Alvarez an NSF Career Award.

It is great to have young EEs involved in analysis of the normal eye's dynamic behavior.

This is fascinating! I've seen a huge improvement in balance with someone with a concussion who has used the Wii Fit balance board and some of the basic test games. She's still working on Binocular Coordination aspect so I love that the possibility of that in game form is being studied in an interdisciplinary environment!

As a doctor who specializes in Optometric Vision Therapy, the proof of the brain changes taking place is shown in fMRI scans

The company is OculoMotor Technology. The game has finished clinical trial and is currently being reviewed by the FDA. So hopefully it will be available through an eye care professional soon

Im a general surgeon 35 years old. With very high Myopia (14 dioptrias) in each eye. Practically I seenalmost nothing without my lenses. I had an intraocular inyection because of neovascularization in my weak eye (right eye) I use soft contact lense on both eyes and glasses because the soft contact lense only go up to -12. So I had almost full deprivation of my weak eye for full 15 days and then when I put back my lenses and glasses my vision was weird. Jitters, shaking, out of focus. I got really panicked because I thought it was because of the panrerineal photocoagulation I had on both eyes 3 days before the injection. So I went to 5 retinologists and they all said I was normal and there was no affection. The symptoms however remained and sometimes got worse. I have been reaserching and I think I got a Amblyopia because of the short term deprivation. So Im starting visual therapy by myself with the little research I have at hand because I live in Mexico and there is not much therapy or advances in that area.
