  • Sistema Integrada de Transport Publico | The Integrated Public Transport System
SITP is the integrated public transit authority that comprises of the TransMilenio BRT system, Urbanos and Complimentarios local buses (part of the "zonal" network), Alimentadores feeder buses to the BRT corridors, and the TransMiCable gondola lift system at the Portal Tunal.
TransMilenio is one of the world's largest and fastest bus rapid transit systems, modeled after the founding bus rapid transit system operated by the Rede Integrade de Transporte (RIT) in Curitiba, Brazil. TransMilenio, which started in December 2000, has grown to a 12-corridor, 137-station system with local and express services that move approximately 1.4 million riders a day and is known to have drastically reduced travel times across the city. Bogotá, which is Colombia's capital city, has roughly 8 million people living in the city, with another 2 million living in nearby suburbs outside of the Capital District.
TransMilenio operates with roughly 2,300 high-capacity, high-floor red BRT buses (many of which are articulated or bi-articulated) along the main busway corridors, called "troncales," and roughly 900 standard high-floor and low-floor buses for the "alimentadores," or feeder bus services. The feeder buses serve far neighborhoods and "feed" passengers to the main terminals, called "Portales," to continue into and through the city.
