The concept of a “my mom” joke has surpassed the status of relating to a single being (referring to the mother of the one telling the joke) but instead immediately referring to the joke’s creator muscle man. Not only are they intertwined to a point where muscleman is thought of once the punchline is said, but to a degree that simply mimicking his voice and saying “you know who else” can result in a laugh. The concept of a “my mom” joke is no longer based on the mother, but muscleman himself being such a prominent figure in all of our memories. Truly beautiful

They came up with an origin story for the "my mom" jokes on the show. His dad would sit on a CB radio waiting for truckers to say something that could set him up for a "that's what she said" type joke. Then muscle man's dad would say "You know who else [insert double entendre]? MY WIFE!" Muscle man witnessed this as a little kid, didn't understand the double entendres, but did understand that specifying that individual (his father's wife, his own mother) as the punchline of that sort of joke got laughs. And he kept repeating that behavior for the rest of his life, never questioning it.

There's also the logistics of the joke. Mordecai and everyone who hears the joke often ask "why are you insulting her? She's your mom." And it does bring up the question of what the point is.
I think the point of the joke is that whatever the negative thing being talked about is something the user is adapted to and knows how to deal with. Most people lived with their moms for a long time and got used to whatever peculiarities they may have had, and if they're lucky, their mom is doing well and they're on good terms.
If somebody in the show says "whoa dude, you just wrecked that car into a building!" and Muscle Man replies "you know who else wrecked a car into a building? My mom!", the insult is very interesting if you take it from the perspective of familiarity. It's as if he's saying "this ain't my rodeo." and to him, this just isn't a big deal. It gives off the appearance that he's chill and doesn't let anything bring him down.
Another example would be if Rigby says "man, I just can't seem to get any dates!" and Muscle Man replies "you know who else can't ever get any dates! My mom!" Again, it's not that Muscle Man is insulting his mom, it's more like he's saying "hey, my mom got through this, what are you whining about?" He's not self-deprecating but rather raising himself, and vicariously his mom, above that.
I think this angle of the joke is important even moreso than the element of surprise, considering that nobody who knows Muscle Man is surprised by the insult anymore.

If you say a "Your mom" joke, they might say something like "No, your mom" or "Yours is worse", but if you say "My mom" and they try to double down on it, you can just own the joke saying something like "Bro, that is what I am saying" and then if they try to flip it by saying something like "Actually my mom too" you can flip it on them and react with shock or disgust.

The real key is that one can sell an insult with their personal reaction and having a substantial amount of the immediate audience also selling it. Like Supa Hot Fire except real. So long as you keep gaslighting your target that you so totally roasted them they will be completely humiliated. Be it the inception of the idea
people forget that was the inception in the movie the nested dreams was the means by which it was achieved
Or the chagrin they feel for not understanding why the joke works. While in the show muscle man uses the joke as an exemplification of his undeserved high self esteem he has a prior to the prison saga era of Christory Chris-Chan quality he is convinced that he is muscular despite no muscular development because he is just volumetrically large. While CWC did overestimate his ability in verbal combat had some level of awareness that he was not particularly adept in verbal abuse. Big exception the curse-ye-hame-ha muscle man prides himself in his made for TV movie stock character of the cool and mean but redeemable lead roles best friend supporting role of the not as cool way meaner and not at all redeemable guy. He lives in Cwcville in a sense and so long as he continues to do so Magichan Sonichu, Mew Two, Chistielle Rosechu will always be all the fans he needs.

This video took so long to come out due to the sole reason that this deep of an analogy has been puzzling scientists since the first conception of "my mom" in a conversation between 4 college students way back in the year of 2000, unsuprisingly though, none of the other students had caught on to such an advanced joke. It is only just now that we are able to make progress in the discovery of the best insult, what with our super advanced technology, capable of curing cancer, and of course, answering the most puzzling statement of the universe: "my mom."
