@Kristopher Prime AND they had wrecker on their side
I am very happy they chose to have Rex fear the chips the way he did. He saw all of his brothers turn because of one small thing.

The PTSD the chips have on Rex is crazy.
He watched an entire Venator of clones turn against him and Ahsoka and try to kill him. They were willing to literally go down with the ship to try and kill Rex. So it makes sense.
Pretty much a handful of the republic army was against him and Ahsoka. That shit would give you PTSD having to kill your brothers knowing that is not their fault but had to be put down anyway.

I'll never understand how some people dislike that they decided to add the chips in the clones head. I think it makes a whole lot more sense then all the clones just being ok with turning on their generals and not caring.
Aside from the quick fix of removing the chips to stop the brainwashing, and the diversion of responsibility of Order 66 from the clones to Palpatine? If the clones were all taught to be sleepers whose loyalty was ultimately to their orders from the Chancellor whilst keeping it hidden from the Jedi, it would have made them duplicitous and complicated to stand behind even if some of them decided to go against Order 66.
Yes, the chips will sidestep the issue of the orders getting detected by the mind-reading Jedi, or some weak-willed clone who decided to blurt out the secret prematurely. But there is some potential in exploring real-life brainwashing and how different characters under different circumstances would react to it. Real-life brainwashing is simply debating, talking, and educating someone to undermine their core values and replace them with your own. Think of Halo's logic plague, or Mass Effect Reaper indoctrination. Or the most entrenched, fanatical person you could think of when debating about politics or religion.
Not only is this element resistant to quick, surgical fixes, but importantly it introduces the element of free will. The clones *willingly* executed Order 66 instead of being controlled by some chip. They will remember and perhaps regret carrying out those orders, and they have no one to blame but themselves. You can still blame it all on Palpatine, but just like real life, it isn't the political or military masters of the soldier that pulled the trigger. It is the soldier himself. He decided to follow orders, and he has to live with that.
This element of living with the repercussions of following Order 66 is what I hope the Bad Batch could explore, assuming they manage to retrieve Crosshair and dechip him. And assuming he doesn't suffer the typical Star Wars trope of redemption equals death.
exactly lol. imagine seeing the clones in tcw and being ok with the idea that they did it willingly.
I disliked the chips at first - the thought that the brainwashing was what made them do it was so much more gut-wrenching, but I learned to appreciate the inhibitor chip thing.
It's like Rex said in Rebels: "We all had a choice." Most willingly ignored it and it got them killed. And that is much worse than brainwashing.
@North Bridge The thing is with the chips, Post Order 66 we saw the clones have free will again, as seen with Howzer.
@@neocomp92 That's exactly why I believe the inhibitor chips are better than the old brainwashing approach from Legends. In terms of storytelling, of the topics that can be brought into the narrative, you raise good points. However, you need to consider this: What would Palpatine do? What's the best way to ensure the clones will execute Order 66? To you, the clones are living individuals and the concept that they collectively participated in Order 66 willingly is very attractive, but to Palpatine the clones are just weapons and "assets", to quote his exact words from the series. He's one of the greatest masterminds we've ever known in pop culture; he's not someone who would leave things to chance, to risk even a single Jedi surviving if possible, least of all giving his weapons "free will". Relying on free will to choose the ten years of brainwashing over 3 years of personal interaction is so not Sith-like. Look how many Jedi survived into the Empire in Legends.
Inhibitor chips as a solution is so much cleaner, more complete, and arguably so much more of a tragedy. The Jedi fell indirectly because of their own hubris, arrogance and dogma, so there's a bit of a "Palpatine was right" moment there. But the clones? Prisoners in their own bodies as they watched the very thing they fought and sacrificed to stop being brought about by their very own hand, finally realising the truth about their existence and purpose. Like Rex said, it made him wonder at the end, "what was the point of all of this?"
I like how Rex moves in front of Omega to protect her if he needs to
Because he knew Omega doesnt have a Chip and wouldnt turn on him at anytime
@Captain Rex my friend, if a child has the single and ultimate goal to kill you, it will be your underestimation that will do you in in the end

Rex reaction to inhibitor chips makes sense especially after the last line âI donât want to bury anymore of our brothersâ
This line hits hard because Rex fears the inhibitor chips of what it did to him and his brothers. Thus traumatizing him of losing his brothers like Fives and needing to bury Jesse and the rest of the 501st because of those chips.

I love rex now he is fresh on the PTSD even better.
When Rex @ 1:08 said that clones cannot control their chips and that he couldnât as well, he was fortunate he had Lady Tano and R7 that removed the chip. Chips is the PTSD of Rex.
yup he would have complied no question if she and R7 didn't pull the chip out
When rex said he couldn't control the chip in his head the look on his face just shows how sad he was that he nearly killed ashoka and that he was forced to fight against his brother which ultimately led to their deaths.
It's times like this when you realise the Bad Batch's experience of Order 66 was relatively tame in comparison to others. They were isolated on the battlefield, so the only clone who knew they violated the order was Crosshair, who wasn't affected as much at the time. All he did was log a report that the padawan escaped, rather than bring every clone in the area down on his squad. They went back to a non hostile environment then slipped away when they got the chance. Yes they lost Crosshair, but luckily they didn't have to kill him.
Rex on the other hand had to fight his way through brothers he served alongside for years after being forced to try and kill Ahsoka. All the while Maul was literally tearing the ship apart and slaughtering everything in his path. Not a single one of the men he commanded survived that day.
Rex: â *fear no manâŠ* â

Seeing Rex on his guard like that, it makes me sad. He shouldnât have to do that, yet he feels he needs to
I love how Rex was so careful in this episode, he never once mentioned the word Jedi or the one who helped him removed the chip who is Ahsoka a Jedi, cause he knows it might trigger the chips to function.
that and you don't know what walls are listening in...
Iâm 2 years late but wow the continuity is on point. When Tupâs chip was malfunctioning, just seeing another Jedi while he was lucid was enough to make him go berserk again
I like Rex around itâs like having a brother /uncle figure.I liked how immediately he wanted to protect Omega from inhibitor chips and I think in another episode Hunter mentions her contacting Rex if anything happens.
You can see the pain on Rex's face when he mentions burying his brothers. Great scene, thanks for the upload.
Poor Rex, hes got PTSD from what it turned his brothers I to on board the Tribunal and from it almost making him kill Ahsoka. I would be quite wary of them too if I was in his shoes. With Order 66 being active long after it was first commanded, it would make sense any clone still with the chip inside could(and did) snap at any moment.
So that's what the ship was called. I thought it was the Resolute.
@@timwarriner38 The Resolute was Anakin's command ship. It was destroyed in Season 3 during the Battle over Sullust by Asajj Ventress and her squad of tri-droid fighters.
Anybody else ever sit back and really appreciate the character of Captain Rex. Clone Wars has always been my favorite show. For me and I can imagine many other Star Wars fans, we grew up with this guy. I was starting first grade when the Clone Wars movie came out and I was finishing my first year of college when the final season came out. This man has been with me through family issues, shitty grades, heart breaks, all of it; the most important sections of my life and he has evolved with all of us. He's one of the few Star Wars characters where whenever he shows up on screen, no matter what the situation is, you feel happy to see an old friend and no matter what he does you love him.
And thatâs why the writers got to save him from being brainwashed by Order 66, even if it wasnât easy and cost the rest of the squad with Ahsoka.
Never seen Rex look this lethal before, and it frightened me
Yoooooo even after EVERYTHING HE WENT THROUGH Rex was READY to DEFEND HER AHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
Best. BOI.
I really love that, that the batch is âah weâll do it later lolâ and Rex is the parent âno, you do it as soon as you are able, donât delay, donât put it off, it is the priority, to get those chips out of your headâ
Hell they must have realised it when Rex of all people was going for his weapon, that despite everything, right then and there, he was putting the batch as the biggest threat, and they realising âoh shit, if Rex is willing to turn on us, it is badâ
He didnt want to have to kill more of his brothers to ensure his survival he almost tried to kill Ahsoka and if Ahsoka was killed during Order 66 Rex would have commited Suicide
I assume this is the point that they begin the process to remove them.
Rex will do ANYTHING to make sure those damn chips donât corrupt any other of his brothers.
I love how Rex is instantly suspiscious of Wreckers headaches
I loved this moment, the behavior of Rex and how he showed his fear really help build a tense atmosphere
This scene hits harder when you remember Rex literally did bury all of his brothers after the Venator crash.
Dude's back is probably sore AF, I don't blame him for not wanting to dig more graves.
Judging on the fact rex's scar still looks pretty fresh id say its been maybe 1 week since rots, maybe 2 this is assuming clones heal twice as fast as a normal person, at most its maybe been a month
At 1:10, he was 100% thinking about Jesse
He's thinking of how he almost killed Ahsoka
I literally began jumping when I saw that hooded figure take off his hood
I love how he puts himself between Omega and them just in case they turn. He knows exactly how clones act when the chips go active.
I love his fear and him remembering jesse but i mean when he reached for his gun he also meant for echo đ
âTrust me, it isnât something you can control. I couldnât.â Rex, you were able to control it for only a few seconds, enough time to warn your friend Ahsoka
I love the tension in this scene. Rex knows what the chips have done and that what happened on the Tribunal scarred him for life.
Once again another great scene of Dee Bradley Baker talking to himself
I love how Rex has been scared by what happened on the cruiser, especially to Jesse, that he automatically gets ready with his gun
His sentence "I don't want to bury any more of our brothers" makes me wanna cry. He said it so calmly, but I imagine how he must've felt saying that.
Finally, theyâre addressing the chipsâ seriousness.
Flashback with jesee
The top worst thing that ever happened to Rex in his army career. Seeing his own family, his brothers turn against him, raging mad without any self control, in the end, burying each and every one of them. I canât begin to imagine how Rex must have felt after doing that. He has every right to be terrified of the Bad Batch Brothers. Especially special force clones.
I don't blame rex for being scared of the chips. He went through it himself and was lucky enough to get out of it's mind control. Imagine your body and mind being hijacked by a few simple words and being forced against your will to do unimaginable things, basically being a prisoner in your own body. Shits fucked up
rex has had what I would argue are his two of his best friends lost to the chips, almost lost himself, and had to bury all of those people with Ashoka. he lost fives permanently. and rex never heard from cody again after order 66 as far as we know. when the final season of the clone wars came he was able to hold off long enough to basically warn Ashoka that what fives were saying was true only to then basically be forced into submission by the damn chip. and then he buried every single one of them in that crash.
and yes I argue fives was one of his best friends because of the fact in season 6 after Ashoka was forced out of the order, fives and rex were worked a lot together and alongside Anakin. Fives states that he didn't wanna leave tup alone because he was his best friend, but he was really really close to rex too as we saw in umbara and when they had to rescue tup it was just rex, fives, and Anakin.
So yeah we have some of the most absurdly effective clones ever produced with the chips in their heads, one of them already fell to its influence, and one is complaining of headaches. His being afraid makes perfect sense.
Imagine if they kidnapped a bunch of clone troopers, remove their chips and use them as their ally
As soon as Rex realized that they haven't taken out the inhibitor chips trust went immediately out the window because of what he saw and what happened to him with that one single order
if rex lived irl
0:36 but instead he goes "You're telling me, you haven't been vaxxed?"
You can tell deep inside, Rex kind of blames himself for not being able to fully understand what Fives was trying to warn him. While he was able to use the information to save Ahsoka and himself, he wasn't able to free his brothers from the chip's control in the Venator starship or warn the Jedi about the devastating plot against them. Burying his brothers and deserting the army to find a new meaning in life was incredibly tough for him.
Nevertheless, even with all that PTSD (and the major plot armor), it's amazing how this clone fought from the First Battle of Geonosis all the way to the Battle of Endor. He'll always be our favorite clone trooper.
Much like how the Jedi Order was killed, but few of itâs members survived Order 66. The Grand Army of the Republic died when itâs soldiers turned against the Jedi, save for a hand full of clones who managed to refuse to follow the Empire. The parallels are so unique, yet very similar.
I like how Rex sees all clones as his brothers, even the bad batch.
Sad to see Rex is ready to draw a gun to his brothers, he couldn't afford to trust them as long the chip is intact.
"You haven't removed your chips yet?" "Well, I thought it was obvious!"
he was ready to blast them right then and there before those chips activated
I love Captain Rex making a return into the bad batch especially that clone force 99 didnt know what rex did about removing the inhibitor chips
He's seen first hand what happens when clones don't get their chips removed, The Inhibitors remove a clones humanity and mercy.
Rexâs fear of the chips makes him my number one favorite clone.
I love how much depth the clones have. They really explored every facette of what it would be like if there was a clone army. The problems they deal with outside of combat, how they view each other as brothers etc.
Sadly its all in the spin-offs, afaik in the main series clones are literally just like "they fight, die, shoot some jedi and then they're not used anymore and are not important anymore"
The way they animated Rexâs fear of the chips was brilliant!
Rex:Your telling me you didnât eat your chips?.....đ
âTrust me, it is not something you can control. I couldnât.â
The dialogue that speaks volumes.
Rex knew right away that those headaches was the inhibiter chip trying to activate.
It really shows how hard the aftermath of Order 66 affected Rex. He literally experienced it from all angles, and then he had to bury his brothers... So... Many brothers...
He remembers what Tup was like before his chip malfunctioned
Remember what Tup said on season 6 "The nightmares are finally over"
Rex's PTSD intensified and readies his pistol when he heard none of the Batch Batch removed their chips
1:04 thinking about how the moment he mentions how this could bring potential danger to omega and that he's had to watch his own brothers die and be buried the rest of the team immediately begins closing themselves off physically and reconsidering the chips.
and at 1:11 when you can literally see rex mentally recall what happened to him when he was forced to turn on ahsoka and nearly killed her. The animators outdid themselves with this episode fr
I've seen various people complain about Rex's reaction, and why would he would just assume that the Batch had their chips removed. Keep this in mind that he had his free will completely taken. He got moved to the passenger seat while the programming had the wheel. The title of this video is a clear explanation of this.
Its also worth noting that he assumes the Batch had there's removed since they aren't with the Empire (clearly), and that they were acting completely normal around him. He only understands what he experienced first hand. When the chips are active, emotionless killers. Out, back to their original personalities.
So Rex having the reaction he did was completely justified and understandable, again going back to the fact he had to deal with this himself and almost kill one of his closet friends as a result.
I bet theyâll recruit Rex again for him to help the team save crosshair and explain everything to him about the chip better than hunter
âI donât want to bury anymore of our brothers.â This is a depressing line but also cold af. Letting them know even though he doesnât want to, he will kill all of them to save himself and Omega.
I had a feeling rex would be on edge when he found out
First Tup dies when his chip activates early. Then Fives dies trying to warn people about the chips. Then Jesse and dozens or maybe even hundreds of other 501st troopers die when their chips activate and their attempts to take out Ahsoka end up making their ship crash.
No wonder Rex is scared of the chips. He'd be crazy not to be.
I am so happy the way they handled this scene. They could of had Rex just casually mention that they should get the chips removed, but it wouldnât of felt right. These are his brothers, his family. And upon learning that they havenât removed the chips, he instantly reaches for his gun and gets in front of omega to protect her. Itâs a really nice touch to have him react like this.
I would be doing the same thing if I were Rex because Fives did warn him about those chips and look what happened when order 66 came down
I love the growing anxiety and nervousness as Rex is slowly beginning to realize they are still liable to Order 66, and are threats to him and Omega despite everything theyâve gone through
I'm just glad in this episode they all got their chips removed... Now if only they could capture Crosshair so they can get his out.
Speaking of Crosshair... When are we going to see him again?
To rex, the clones were family
So imagine your family try to kill you as mindless soldiers and you have no choice but to kill them
The idea of that sends shivers
Rex has seen some shit. Poor Fives.
This scene solos mando s3
Can we talk about how he got between omega and the batch? His first thought was to make sure sheâs safe even though they had just met
This scene and the scene where Wrecker's chip activates tie beautifully together. That later scene is done so well that it truly illustrates just how terrifying the effects of the chip are, and why Rex is so scared to find out that they all still have theirs.
Considering last week he almost killed his best friend and then his brothers tried to kill him and his best friend, it's a pretty founded fear
Might i add, i had hopped we saw more reaction of him when wrecker did finally executed order 66, he was very collected
@@nine7937 Because he said he didn't want to bury more brothers. He already called out it was a major risk and expected then to turn at any time, didnt mean he was going to give up on them easily.
While I understand the dislike for the Inhibitor Chips, I find it humanized the clones a hell of a lot more. Before all this we saw the individuality between each clone trooper, despite all sharing the same faces and bred to follow orders, they were still living beings with emotions, wants and needs. Depending on the Troopers Order 66 was either easy for them or extremely traumatizing, Rex broke down as it was happening and Bly for example stopped firing once Aayla hit the ground.
After that in Bad Batch we see, that after 66 Dropped the Clones went back to being loyal soldiers of the Republic turned Empire, some leaving and questioning this and some choosing to stay cause they wanted to.
"I don't want to bury any more of our brothers"
That hurts. Especially after the ending of TCW. The penultimate scene of the entire show was literally him burying his brothers, after they all died in a starship crash that was precipitated by their chips being activated. Ugh.
