Every legendary warrior needs an escort on the way to Hell.
Reinhardt is the most accessible melee hero in the game. His hammer delivers damage to all targets in a large arc in front of him. His primary function in the game is deploying and maintaining his shield to defend his team. This means Reinhardt players with a superior sense of strategy often best players who are mechanically better at the game. His influence on a round of Overwatch often creates a war of attrition. Enemies are faced with the challenge of either destroying his defenses or circumventing them, an even harder task for most heroes. Approaching him directly poses its own challenges as he does a large amount of damage per swing, effectively killing most heroes in just 3 swings. He is also capable of charging an opponent to pin them into a wall, causing catastrophic damage that instantly kills most heroes.

I am a Rein main with all my heart. All this talk about protecting the team gets to me. I watched the video so many time now but every time his mentor sais "... be their shield" I cry like a baby. My team is great and its really an honour to be their shield every f...ing match. If you guys read it, I love you all(no homo)

I am half German, my mother was born in Stuttgart.
I was station in Germany Spangdahlem AF base just outside of Doodledorf I loved Germany and touring it the cities was lovely.

Any patriot defending their homeland is someone to be respected, PERIOD. Germany has had an unfortunate history over the last 105 years of being on the wrong side, but most (Americans at least) don't blame the people or even most soldiers. The number of people that can be called directly responsible for the German atrocities in WWII (The most atrocious war in human history) can be said to be less than 10,000. Considering the Germans marshaled more than 10,000,000 soldiers throughout the war and started with something like 170,000,000 for a population, it's very clear statistically speaking that it was a very active minority committing the acts. When you are held at gunpoint and told to do something yes you did it but you are not **responsible** for doing it. I personally am quite appreciative of the German drive to meet new heights in engineering, manufacturing, and industrial prowesse. I believe Werner Von Braun's famous quote sums up the average German citizen's responsibility for the atrocities committed by it's government. "The rocket worked perfectly, except for landing on the wrong planet"(Werner von Braun remarked to a colleague shortly after the first confirmed hit of a V2 rocket on London).
The people of Germany were surely only misguided by poor circumstance and an abnormally charismatic control freak with a bone to pick over the current world order (this is how I summarize Hitler when trying to remove the historical baggage we've associated with him as a person when about half of his "crimes against humanity" were solely Himmler's responsibility without any interaction with Hitler). Germany is a lesson, not an outcast. A lesson on what happens when economic instability meets an entire culture with rock bottom self-esteem.

Curtis, a Mace is a heavy club with a spiked metal head. If the metal head is heavier, larger and is on a chain then it's called a Flail. The weapons used in this are Rocket-propelled Warhammers.

Doesn't Morningstar just described the head? I thought if the club had a spiked head it was a Morningstar Mace, and the chained version was a Flail (either Morningstar Flail or otherwise depending on the head)?

Maybe the wrong place, but I've been giving you business in another channel review (cough cough erb) but I'm an Overwatch guy and this is my favorite short. A couple years late but glad to stumble on to it. Keep it up anyways.

actually a maul is a warhammer, since warhammers handle length can vary and be as short as a standard one handed mace or long as a pole arm & halberd. So really calling it a warhammer or a maul, which makes both accurate.
@Curtis, Reinhardt and the other crusaders use rocket-propelled warhammers. In-game, Reinhardt uses his rocket hammer for large, sweeping attacks, so you'd probably enjoy that. If you're interested in trying Overwatch out, they're doing a free weekend from the 17th-20th of November if you'd like to try before buy. If you start playing, I'd suggest doing the practice against bots thing to try out all his skills.
For clarification: A mace is basically a ball on a stick, sometimes with spikes or blades. A flail is essentially a mace with a chain between the handle and the ball.
1. The place is Eichenwalde which is a currently playable map in the game.
2. The girl talking to Reinhardt is one of Torbjorn's children, Brigitte. She is also a member of the Ironclad Guild because she has the same tattoo Torb has. Hers is at the top of her left arm as shown.
3. Reinhardt was never selected to join Overwatch. It was Balderich. Reinhardt took his place after he died.
4. Balderich is still on the throne in Eichenwalde. This short reveals how he got there.
5. Reinhardt has a voice line in game, "I must recover my master's armor." This short reveals why he has to do that. You can unlock Balderich Von Adler's armor & play in it as Reinhardt.
6. He has another voice line in game that we hear in this short, "Barrier is failing."
7. We get to see more of the Omnic Crisis & watch a young, cocky Reinhardt learn what it means to be a team player. He went from being the team's weapon to the team's shield.
8. The big bot that dropped from the sky was an OR-14 the predecessor to the OR-15s one of whom is Orisa (a playabale character).
9. We see how Reinhardt lost his eye & got the scar.
Also if you go to the bar on the playable map, Eichenwalde, you can see reinhardt's name carved into the counter from all those years ago. The coin is also where he placed it in the last scene. His last line "I have been called. I must answer - always" is a mirror of what Balderich says at the beginning when he tells Reinhardt he was selected to join overwatch. His added "always" at the end of it implies that he can not refuse the call due to the guilt and in memory of Baldrich.
I think the cool thing about these is they have no reason to make them from a commercial standpoint but not only do they, they put their full effort into them. Like if the game was failing it would make sense to try and do it for advertising but it clearly isn't. They do it for the fans, and fan service is what makes Blizzard special.
the last scene, where he comes back, more than twenty years later to the tomb of his dearest friend, the one who started his journey into overwatch, that scene just breaks me, it destroys me everytime
The thing that got to alot of people seeing this was when the old guy died ontop of that throne, because there is a map where you that fight took place where you will find him actually on that throne at the end of the map.
There was actually a lesson for Reinhardt players in this video. A lot of new players will just charge in and swing their hammer for a couple kills and then die, but their team dies too. But a good Reinhardt keep his shield up on the team.
He also uses cover and tries to threaten as much space as is possible while giving his team the edge. The biggest thing most Rein characters don't seem to get at first is that the objective is time. The more you are able to conserve your resources and make the enemy waste theirs the better your team is going to do (most of the time). Ironically Action economy is just as much a thing in this game with each character's abilities, ultimate and cooldowns as they are in any tabletop game. As it's a faster system and it takes some skill to really pay attention to not only the enemy but what your team is able to do.
Hey spaz, if you ever see this, Balderich (the crusader who died) is seen in the Last Bastion cinematic during the flashback Bastion experiences from the dead one.
Balderich's death is the manliest death ever. Fuckin' twin rocket hammers, yo.

Those huge omnic's the one that cut Reinhardt's eye are considered OR14 after the war nubani remade them into A improved version called OR15 that didn't have the heat swords but were more for protection, so a certain black man fisted them all to oblivion then a little girl with a right for creation made a even more advanced unit named Orisa which we get today as are main hero which is EVEN more of a protection robot but still with weaponry

Actually a mace is a club handle with a shaft and a most the time a spiked ball. The one where its a handle chain and spiky ball is technically a morning star is similar to a mace
No chains would make it a flail but this is neither anyway, it's a war-hammer.
the sad thing is that the character who died in this (balderich) is still there dead on the throne in-game when you play on that level
I knew he would love this one considering that he is a real patriot
the last bastion and honor and glory are my favorite
in retrospect the only way to get to know the characters is by watching the videos
