- A few of our upper grade riders had a bit of a play during the lunch break of a training day last weekend. Whipped out the Gopro to get some of the action... not Toni Bou-challenging stuff but fun to watch! Trials riding must be the best kept secret in the world of motorbikes but for some reason moto-trials (or observed trials) is only big in Europe and the UK. Many countries there are just a handful of trials clubs in each country. This introduction to trials explains why trials riders are so glad they are in on the secret - we reckon you should be too! Visit your local moto-trials club and chat with some trials fanatics today. Trial is the world's most popular participatory motorcycle sport. In Australia about one thousand riders compete, - in Europe hundreds of thousands compete regularly. Trial riders compete in ALL weather conditions! The term midlife crisis was coined by Elliott Jaques in 1965. More modern research has shown midlife crisis is not a phase that most middle-aged people actually experience, and some have questioned the existence of this phenomenon. Unlike most other forms of motorcycle sport, Trial is not racing. It is simply you and your bike pitted against the terrain. Trial is a sport of balance, skill and concentration.
So many riders on our Traction eRag trips say that it's about so much more than dirt riding - it's helped with depression, anxiety, life direction and midlife crisis. A midlife crisis is a transition of identity and self-confidence that can occur in middle-aged individuals, typically 45-64 years old. One at a time, competitors will ride over an obstacle course of boulders, streams, hill climbs, logs, drop offs, and nearly anything else they can find. There are trials classes for everyone. From Juniors of 16 years of age - down to barely walking, through to Veterans from 40 to 70+. There are trials classes to cover all rider ability levels, with Expert, A, B, C, and Clubman/Novice levels. There are also classes for Masters (35+). Other classes include Sidecar, Post-Classic (twin shock) and Classic. Whilst it is spectacular and sometimes appears dangerous at the top level, moto trials is a very safe sport. Speed and other competitors are not factors likely to cause incidents, so the sport of trials remains very safe. It is described as a psychological crisis brought about by events that highlight a person's growing age, inevitable mortality, and possibly shortcomings of accomplishments in life. It, midlife crisis, can result in feelings of depression, remorse, and anxiety, or the desire to achieve youthfulness or make drastic changes to their current lifestyle.

Excellent video fellows. I am now the proud owner of an 85 240 Fantic 2 stroke. I have been doing silly things, with no injuries so far. I have learned so much and had so much fun, I can not thank you all enough for posting this video, as well as your others, and inspiring me and I'm sure countless others to go trials riding. I'm certain the experience gained has saved my skin at least a couple times riding my street bike and dual sport. I even got a friend of mine who had previously only ridden cruisers to come play on my bike. Here's to continued cheesy grins.

I'm a 40 year old man who can wheelie a bicycle since I was about 8 years old with perfect back brake control so 1km wheelies are not really a problem.I bought a trials bike(sherco 290) when I was 37 and wheelies are ....how do I explain....I go toofast straight away.my rear brake technique with a mtb are perfect.with my sherco.......not really.I still have the reflex of pulling the right lever wich is the front brake on a motorcycle of course.wich I know because I'm a motorcycle veterean with over 20 years experiance.but covering the rear brake on the trials bike is a habbit I still do not have.practice practice practice.great vids👏👏👏
Im in the same boat. Getting better now! very little play in the throttle made a huge difference for me. As well as having the levers setup really far in so only my index finger touches the end of the lever (like my DH MTB setup) much betting control for me with the clutch setup this way. My biggest issue is having a death grip trying to keep up with the bike (2019 Sherco stf300) and getting major 'arm pump'. I spent a few days at the club just focusing on body position and not gripping hard.. getting better slowly.

When you buy your kid one of these bikes pick up three sets of sprockets and chain plus maybe a rear hub. You are gonna need them. Check spoke tightness often.

yep, my brother broke both arms doing a slow wheelie too. we really emphasise learning to cover the rear brake over on our enduro channel before even thinking of getting to the balance point.

I did really technical woods, obstacle, and some urban riding with a mountain bike before I got a motorcycle. Now have a couple street motorbikes (my favorite is my gsxr, the power is intoxicating) but wanted one of these for a while. I'm wondering though do these go 70-80mph (road speeds) without problems? If not what's a good off road bike to develop skill? I've been looking at a drz400s (decently cheap and easy to maintain/fix) but would love your input, thanks.

would a beta 80 be too small for an adult beginner to mess around on? (already ride street and would like to learn wheelies etc)

id love to do myself a favor and get into trials but trials bikes are so expensive... even used...
+Darrin Knode given how small and light they are, they are very expensive per kg. the cost of lighter metals would add up, but mostly i think it's because they never sell that many of them so they don't get the price down through lots of sales. :(
But as you can see that they hold their value, so if you find you don't like it you can always come get your money back. But you will Love it.

how hard it is to get started? and learn the basics to have balance and do a wheelie and stoppie and learn to get over a few rocks or trees etc. can it be learned if i practice for like one summer

well I hot a dirt bike and after about 4 months I could get over logs and rocks big hill climbs. ect

Would love to buy a trials bike... What is the trials equivalent of the DRZ400? Cheap, strong, reliable, fun, parts availability, aftermarket support. Please tell me this so I can start looking for one. I want to buy the right bike. For me, I bought a drz400sm, and it was the RIGHT bike, for all those reasons above. So I need to get the right trials bike to match.

can't say, it would vary from country to country. honestly all the late models are good bikes, it almost comes down to which color scheme you'd prefer.

Trials riders have smaller knobs but know how to use them!

I bought a sherco 290 from 2004 for 1000€.cheapest fun I've had in my life.if you can wheely a mountainbike for a km like I can a wheely and stoppie on that thing is not far away.

I've been competing in Trials since 1968 (YES, I'm old, and NO, I'm not an expert), and I can honestly say, that any Trials bike in good running order is good to start on. A used bike comes "pre-scratched", Which is good because you're going o add a forest of scratches to it during your learning curve. Because of your age and weight, a 125cc might be a good idea, since the former owner has out-grown it and might be willing to let it go for a small amount.

+MCnugget MCnugget there are bolt on seat kits that often include extra fuel too but of course you still can't go too fast on them with the suspension and frame geometry through.
