It doesn't matter if Lang Lang is a good pianist or not, or if he is paid a lot for these master classes, teaching his art to young people with passion and gentleness, is the noblest thing in the existence of a man, and he does it with great sympathy and love. No doubt he is a beautiful and great person.

I am a nothing "piano player" BUT I would be embarrassed to hear I played a song when I was age 12-and I'm MANY times that today. Lang Lang is introducing Rishi to the concept of bringing "sad" into playing. Of course, the older one gets and experiences life in all its iterations, sadness is expressed differently--that creates the colour in the music, from playing to performing.

Thanks very much for this video. I always want to listen Lang Lang to play this piece to compare it with Yuja Wang's play. Chinese people said Yuja is the female version of Lang Lang and Yuja's response is that she is too feminine to be Lang Lang and would prefer Lang Lang to be the feminine version of Yuja. So it would be very interesting to compare Lang Lang's play with Yuja's. These two are two of the best pianists in our generation. This video at least gives me an idea how Long Long's performance of Op. 64 No. 2 would sound like.

Pseunition Langlang is a pop star among classical music performers. As a master performer, he is exaggerated. I think even Yundi Lee interprets better than him, not mention these older pianists, like Rubinstein, Horowitz, Polini...
But Langlang did pay a lot of effort in music coaching, that was a nice contribution.

World-renowned pianist Lang Lang shared his enthusiasm and wisdom in an instructive and insightful masterclass in McConomy Auditorium last Tuesday. Dressed in a blazer and jeans, Lang was animated and introspective as he listened, directed, and critiqued the playing of three deserving pianists: Rishi Mirchandani of the Carnegie Mellon Music Preparatory School, Carnegie Mellon senior piano performance major Jimmy Liu, and Shannon Huang of Duquesne University’s Mary Pappert School of Music.
Each student played quite well for Lang and the appreciative audience. Lang instructed not only in technique but also in musical phrasing and expression. To the young Mirchandani, age 12, Lang Lang emphasized the “waltz feeling” the player needed to portray in Chopin’s “Waltz in C# minor.” He sang along and directed the phrasing, at times interspersing rhythmic stomping to make a point about rhythm. Musically, Lang accentuated the “different colors” in Chopin’s dominant melody, in that in the second time in the piece the melody is played, it needed to sound like “a distant memory.” Mirchandani, who was awestruck by the classical star but impressively kept his composure, understood and agreed with this notion.

What is a masterclass but the master showing how HE would play it? The student's performance here is superlative.
