  • A watercolor bird painting tutorial which looks at 10 tips for realistic legs and feet with artist Paul Hopkinson.
The legs and feet of a bird almost look like they belong to a reptile. They are very different to their soft, feathery bodies and therefore need a completely different approach. These 10 tips should help you paint slim, realistic, real looking legs on any watercolor birds that you paint. Focus on these 10 key points, and you should notice a difference in your bird paintings from now on.

00:00 HOW TO PAINT REALISTIC LEGS & FEET IN WATERCOLOR
00:33 Choose a pale foundation colour for the bird's legs
01:44 Vary the paint consistency that is used to increase the tonal variation
03:18 Use random fine marks for detail so that the legs look more realistic
04:10 Don't make the legs too wide, many birds have incredibly thin, spindly pins
05:40 Work the feet in tiny blocks, they are formed of plates and need to look like this
07:56 Vary the tones and keep reassessing your work as the darker tones are applied
10:48 Work with a fine tipped brush to achieve the fine lines you need
12:18 Noting the structure of the leg is really important
14:12 Shine and highlights will add character and life to the bird
16:51 Think about shadows so that the bird feels 'grounded' and not floating above a perch

Yes I found this video a huge help with painting legs, feet, claws, & talons. Your reminder of keeping the legs thin, working the feet in blocks/plates, & the right consistency of paint during certain sections was helpful. Thanks for sharing this wonderful informational video with us. I really appreciate it! My Indigo Bunting painting will be much better now.

Ho Colleen, these little elements of an animal or bird are very important to get right. So simply practising just on those areas can help when you come to work on your Indigo Bunting. Thank you for following my work here, Paul 🎨

Do you trace the picture first? From a photo or picture?

    • @TheDevonArtist

Hi Debbie, a good question. I do trace the photo using graphite transfer paper. Freehand is the preferred way though, but when working with a video, this way is much quicker. Paul 🎨

It can look that way sometimes, but once you break the process down into parts, it becomes easier to do. :-)
