1953 Buick Special - Will it Run?

- Our newest edition is an old forgotten 1953 Buick Special! We have no idea how long its been since the car last ran. The Buick has a straight 8 known as the 'Fireball 8.' The body is in great shape, however the interior has seen better days. Will we be able to get this Buick Special to run?

You'll get there. One thing to keep in mind when you are working on old cars is that most everything can be rebuilt fairly easily. Try to teach yourselves how to take the starter off and repair it, take the carb off and rebuild it, etc, instead of ripping it off and just replacing it. You learn much more about cars doing it that way. A Factory Service manual has instructions for repairing anything on there. You can learn about things like the oiling cups on the generator and distributor, how to clean and refill the oil bath air cleaner, how to adjust the voltage regulator, all kinds of stuff. I'm not familiar with that exact accelerator starter but the other poster is correct about the ball switch. it is mostly there, however, to keep the starter from engaging when you floor the accelerator at speed. Make.Sure.It.Works. Also, be easy on starters...they don't like being overheated, or as you found out, overrun(remaining engaged with the engine running) excessively. Watch some Mortske Repair videos if you haven't...he's a pro at getting these old engines started.

I guys, I am old, I have always liked 53 Buicks, I am also working to get an old car fired , please start drenching every nut and bolt etc with WD40 as it will make your life easier, STARTING with your door hinges lol, good content...
A race car, that one is definitely not a racer! A new one was slow slow slow. It is a floater, if you get it going it will ride like you are floating on water😳. But it is a worthy project.

Those old Buicks are EPIC!, especially if you restore it or beef it some but still keep that fireball 8 under the hood, those are great engine, it's an early 53, late 53 was when the Fireball 8 was replaced with the nail head V8 and went from 6 volt to 12 volt, as you probably know going from 6 volt to 12 volt conversion is drat easy. Another way to see if it's positive or negative ground 6 Volt is you hook it up, then flash the headlights, or turn on the ignition switch, watch the needle on the volt meter or ammeter and if the needle goes into the positive when you turn something on or flash the headlights then it's hooked up backwards, example, you think its negative ground so you hook it up that way, flash the lights, need on volts/ammeter goes towards positive, especially if it has a separate starter button and you can crank the engine without the key on, then when you know "OH...whoops...it's positive ground NOT negative ground" then you switch it around, and flash the headlights or whatever again and the needle should move towards negative like it should the moment a load goes on the battery, a trick I taught myself through trial and error messing around with 6 Volts, another way assuming the wires are still intact on the coil, if the wire on the + end of the coil goes to ground then that also is good way to know for sure if it's a positive ground 6 Volt rather than negative ground, FYI on those Buicks that you start by pushing the gas whether they are 6 volt or 12 volt there is vacuum from the carburetor that is supposed to disengage the starter once it starts, so there was no vacuum to the starter release, another thing I've seen people do especially if they put a different carburetor on it they would run a separate starter button under the dash or something that runs the starter, so then it's push button start, you wouldn't have to change the ignition switch just run a separate starter button if you can't get the vacuum release to work or get it replaced, as much as I hate to say it sounds like you guys cooked the starter, if it whines louder than that then yeah you cooked the starter, you possibly can rebuild or if worse comes to worse get another replacement starter

Also, you might have mentioned it, but 1953 was the very last year for a Buick Straight Eight, and only in a Special. All the higher level Buicks got the new 322 V8. wait till you see the battery that actually goes in that car...lol.
One thing you notice outright is that all body fitment and gaps are just as they left the factory, 68 years ago !! What's a squeak or two ??

The little black football on the side of the carb is the cap for the switch mechanism pull the screw off it and there is a spring and ball bearing your ball bearing is stuck up once the motor starts there is a vacuum passage that pulls the bearing down and away from the contacts on each side of the black football part. Clean the passage with a q tip and brake clean and then I always add a little oil and you should be good to go.
Just remembered it’s a ball bearing piston with a Bakelite block inset with contacts and a spring. The bearing goes in front of the piston and the piston head has a slope which slants can’t remember which way it points up or down but just take notice if y’all have anyone more problems feel free to ask I own two 53s.

Alternatively you could by just about any gm starter from 1949-53 and change the cone on it to a chevy cone and it will work just fine.

Well done guys on getting it to fire off/ run on the bottle. Yeah you now need to stop and work out why the starter motor still runs. Yes you will destroy that new starter motor if it continues to stay engauged when it runs. Try backing the throttle off a bit when it starts this should turn off the starter. Yes now get a fuel system happening. No more running it of the bottle. Some posative feedback from a qualified Mechanic. Well done once again.
The starter should disengage itself once you let off the button period that makes me think it is the button that is sticking

Try using a 12 V battery just for starting it
Reach out boys, get some help from the junk yard dogs. Ground wires are very important on these 6 volt girls. Pull the valve cover, make sure it is getting oil and look closely at the valves, check to see if they are opening and closing. Flush the rad with water, check all you can, do what you can, that old 8 will run and the car is worth your time.

Great video. Nobody is born knowing all about cars so just ignore the negatives. I don't know much more than you but it looked like that weird starting system meant you left the motor running, which would stop it disengaging. Could be rigging a push to make button switch to the starter, bypassing the contraption, might be easier. Sorry if that doesn't help.
Thanks! We are definitely trying to learn! Usually through trial an error. I do believe the switch on the carb for the starter got stuck. So we may wire a button to make it easier and a little more reliable
@@WestMountainClunkers On my 52 buick Cater carb. The switch is on the carb. There is a little ball in the mechanism that breaks the switch once the engine makes some vacuum. Check the small metal tube going to the carb switch

Hold eccelerato all the way down and you need to check firing order and let that starter rest a lil yuo r gonna burn it up again!
