- How I made crispy soonte at home (no food colour)ಗೆಣಸಿನ ಸೊಂಟೆ | Sweet potato fries | Genasina soonte
Sweet potatoes can be used for different types of dishes like- tasty snacks and also curries. Here we show you how to prepare a crispy and spicy tea time snack by using sweet potatoes. We haven't used any artificial food colors, rather we used a natural source of food color. The sweet potatoes are cut into uniform sized pieces (finger shaped) and half fried at the beginning. Then coated with gram flour mixture and deep fried for second time. We also add salt, red chilly powder and sesame seeds to the gram flour batter. Goes well with evening tea or coffee or as a time pass snack too.
Ingredients:-
Sweet potato
Besan 3cups
Salt to taste
Red chilli powder
Seseme seeds 3to 4 sp
Natural food colour
Required water
Coconut oil for deep fry

My favourite snack. Whenever we travelled to the Malnad and coastal areas of Karnataka, this snack was always bought back home to savour. I remember my grandmother and my mom used to bake whole potatoes,onions , sweet potatoes and jackfruit seeds in firewood stoves, when we were kids and before so much urbanization of Bangalore City. Miss those fun filled days. Hats off to you and your family and friends who are accomplishing such great tasks. 🙏

That natural food colour is derived from the fruit of the tree called Bixa orellana, (botanical name) also known as achiote, and annatto.
This plant is grown in gardens Nd fences.Its fruits were used to make BINDI by mixing with thick juice of a lemon plant which gives tiny limes the size of peanuts. And this fruit's juice was used like ALTA or MEHANDI by dancers or Brides.Now commercially grown for medicinal and making natural food coloring like AMARANTH OR BEAT ROOTS etc.

@@JustMe54328 Alta till recently was not known in South.Alta is a combination of resin of bark of a tree and red clay and gives a permanent natural dye which does not run after a few washes.
But this tiny fruits juice is thin not glue like hence it was mixed.BINDI needed to stick but get washed away not much permanency needed. Adding with
TURMETIC based SINDHOOR gave different tint when in contact with lime juice!

Some nurseries sell this plant. Local name is ಕುಂಕುಮದ ಗಿಡ. Needs comparatively more water and lot of sun light.
