  • Jason-Emery Groen is a designer with HDR Inc., the design firm behind the vision for The Ottawa Hospital's new campus development. In this video he takes us behind the scenes of the planning and design for the new campus, and highlights some of the incredible changes the new facilities will bring to healthcare in Ottawa.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Ottawa Hospital is one of Canada’s largest learning and research hospitals, with more than 1,100 beds and approximately 12,000 staff members.
Our focus on learning and research helps us develop new and innovative ways to treat patients and improve care. As a multi-campus hospital affiliated with the University of Ottawa, we deliver specialized care to the Eastern Ontario region, but our techniques and research discoveries are adopted around the world. We engage the community at all levels to support our vision for better patient care.
From the compassion of our people to the relentless pursuit of new discoveries, The Ottawa Hospital never stops seeking solutions to the most complex healthcare challenges.

This looks spectacular and I love bringing the outdoors inside. Breathing life into a building that often feels devoid of it.
Question... there was an emphasis on efficiency and speed in the design as it pertains to getting people in need of care to the support they need. With that in mind, why have the helipad on the roof? Is the ER, the most likely of resources required for patients airlifted to the hospital, near the roof? Or what would the reason be for placing it on the roof? I'm curious. Hopefully someone with informed insight can provide their thoughts.
Otherwise, love this design and thank you for the video and sneak peek.
