Whiskey in the Jar
(traditional, arrang. J. Ferguson, Dec. 2013)
108 bpm
V1.
C Am
As I was goin’ over the far-famed Kerry mountains
F C
I met with captain Farrell, and his money he was countin’.
C Am
I first produced me pistol, and then produced me rapier,
F C
sayin’, “Stand and deliver, for I am a bold deceiver!”
Chorus:
G
Musha ring, dumma too, damma ta.
C
Whack fol the daddy 'o,
F
whack fol the daddy 'o-
C G C
there's whiskey in the jar!
Interlude: C Am F C
V2.
I counted out his money, and it made a pretty penny.
I put it in my pocket, and I took it home to Jenny.
She sighed and she swore, that she never would deceive me,
but the devil’s in that woman, and you know she tricked me easy.
Chorus:
V3.
I went into my chamber, all for to take a slumber;
I dreamt of gold and riches, and sure it was no wonder.
But Jenny drew me charges, and she filled them up with water,
then called for captain Farrel to be ready for the slaughter.
Chorus:
V4.
It was early in the morning, as I arose to travel:
up comes a bunch of troopers and likewise captain Farrel.
I first produced me pistol, for she’d stolen away me rapier,
but I couldn't shoot the water, so a prisoner I was taken.
Chorus:
V5.
Now, if anyone can aid me, it's me brother in the army,
if I can find his station in Cork or in Killarney.
And if he'll go with me, we'll go rovin’ in Kilkenny,
and I know he'll treat me better than me only sportin’ Jenny.
Chorus:
V6.
Now, some men take delight in the fishin’ in the ocean;
others take delight in the carriages a-rollin’.
Me, I take delight in the juice of the barley
and courtin’ pretty women in the mornin’ bright and early.
Chorus: [repeat]

Hello Canadian folk singer Jesse Ferguson!
Hi my channel
❤ Jesse, Thank You. 💫
I'm thinking about taking up the mandolin, so I started reading about mandolins and watching videos about them. I'm glad I found this video!!!!!
Gotta love a good old Irish song especially on Mandolin .Thanx Jesse
How can you not like this tutorial.........................thanks Jesse a great help.
Thank you! I just got my first working mandolin yesterday and this is the first song I'm putting effort in to learning rather than just tinkering. It's a lot of fun and you're a great instructor. Thank you.
Rock on!
I really like this song and how you teach it. You have a great singing voice.. I will attempt to imitate. Thanks again and please keep these folk song tutorials coming!
I love this instrument so much
Until you burst into singing, I thought the mandolin was an arpegio instrument. Thanks for changing my mind. And cheers on the beautiful vocal.
Thank you a bunch! Just started playing mando, and you have helped me get going a lot!
Mandos my first Instrument, and this is my first song I'm learning. I've spent so much time on this video learning this song, I felt it was time to say thanks! So Thank you. Next up is Scotland the Brave Cant wait to learn that first part.
My kid watched literally 2 minutes of your video, and picked up the chop and chord pattern. This on a 12 string guitar. Thanks! :D
Great tutorial Jesse thanks for taking the time to make it for us beginners
Hi from England! Great tutorial, thank you so much!
I can't believe how straightforward this was. Thank you.
A little trick I'm sure many of you already know, the mandolin is basically the same as the top (bass) four strings on a guitar but upside down. So if you picture a G chord on guitar with the two bass (top) strings, the E string 3rd fret the A 2nd fret, on mandolin you flip it upside down to play the thinnest (E) string(s) 3rd fret, second thinnest (A) 2nd fret. Then its the same with all guitar chords. Incidently, violin is same tuning as mandolin.
no, i had no idea 🤔🤔🤔
thanks for this and any other 'trick' given 👍👍👍 🙌🙌🙌
Same as violin is easy for me to comprehend, and maybe others too.
this sounds lovely
This is very clear teaching & also can see pretty well. For mandolin though, lots of fingers going into very small spaces! Also a vote for a simple " Shady Grove" lesson.
Loving this.
thank you Mr. Ferguson........it helps me a lot........
Tip the brim of my hat to you, thanks for the solid tutorial
Awesome lesson......very well explained and simple!
Thanks for teaching!
Truly epic.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE and thank you..:)
Really enjoyed that ... as a 5row box player I The mandy and the box work well together ! Well done !

You've got a good voice there Jesse
fuck yes, jesse fergusen

I'm Soo buying a mandolin amazing folk instrument
Awesome!
Just getting into mandolin.... excellent video. I'm clawhammer ukulele
Could you please do Rocky Road To Dublin on mandolin? You had a wonderful video of it with the mandolin a while ago, and I enjoyed it immensely.
I love this song and I work in an Irish pub so I hear it basically every night. Everyone who comes in to play it sings different lyrics, but honestly, I think Metallica had the best lyrics of all versions
Tyler Keating Metallica's was basicly thin lizzy's version right?
Thank you!
Thanks for the video :)
Strum pattern will be useful. Thanks.
Jesse Ferguson is bae
Awesome! :)
Good voice.
excellent ! thank u
Came across this by accident.at last someone who makes sense ,thank you ,bought a mandolin in Italy whilst I was getting married
Helpful to demonstrate it in key D as that's a more common key to play it in and favoured by vocalists, fiddlers and accordion players. Personally I'd say a 4/4 rhythm is simply described as filling a bar with DOWN DOWN DOWN/UP DOWN/UP ad infinitum.
Jimmy Powells-mandolin player UK
Wow. You are so clear, and the chords are visible. I'm a newbie on mandolin but an oldie human. I ordered a mandolin because my hands aren't working right after an illness. (Occupational therapy, right?) My spirits brightened when you mentioned "two-finger mandolin chord chart". Thank-you! Thank-you!
Happy strumming, Gigi!
Ok I need to find me a mandolin now. ^^
Little late to the party but I would love to see Macpherson's Lament in a lesson video
I had an interesting time, imagining your face
R.L. Kramer
Haha I laughed so hard
I'm not sure if Harold Foss is public domain but a tutorial of one of his songs would be cool!
I would love to learn a very very easy version of shady Grove on mandolin please
This original version was by a folk singer group called The Dubliners but it was populized by Thin Lizzy and a Metallica
I'm a guitar player, but just bought a cheap mandolin just for laughs. IT'S A WAY FUN INSTRUMENT! I'm just learning the chords, and the weird tuning threw me off at first. Not to mention it's so tiny! but I'm having a blast messing around with it. Cool vid. Now I know another song. Thanks for post.
if you're a guitarist, think of the strings of a mandolin as the bottom four strings of a guitar in reverse order. Can make it a lot easier to get a grip on it.
Hey Jesse, wow, your voice has a very nice sound. Can you show some other songs, this song is top explained.
Come play a show near Guelph, ON!
this is great! although did you ever continue the "how to" for the mandolin? you should, this is so helpful, thanks!
We have the same mandolin xD great vid, thank you!
What kind of mandolin is that ?? ....I've been trying to figure that out...Cant see enough of the headstock to guess....
Hi Buck, it's a vintage Hondo brand mandolin (around 25 years old).

Please do ‘Rocky road to Dublin’ !!!
Jesse could you please post a tutorial for rocky road to dublin. I wanna learn that song on mandolin. 😊
omg, love this song. Im irish (from Kilkenny) and I first got introduced to this song and instrument on holiday to spain when I was younger as me and my friends (also from Ireland, but diff parts) were in an Irish Bar, and the musician (Brendan O'Brian) was playing this.
I was wondering, would you be able to fo Flogging Molly 'If I ever leave this world alive'.
I agree! Flogging Molly “If I ever leave this world alive” would be a really great video. I know the chords but can’t seem to find a drumming pattern that fits.
Awesome. Can you do Sonny’s Dream on Mandolin please?
I think I might have the same mandolin as you. Ventura? I bought this for my husband but he's more into guitar so i decided to use it :)
😯 I was expecting Thin Lizzy 😂
Hey been a while. Can u upload Irish washer women it's a great tune
can you do about how to play the title Labyrinth from Stronghold (3), which also includes tabs?
Hi. I have zero experience with instruments though I love music. I chose the Mandolin as a challenge for myself this summer- I'm a bucket list junkie. I just wanted to say I enjoy watching your videos. And once I've got it figured out, I'll share and tell me what you think.
Hi. I did the same a few years ago with ukulele. Surprisingly not too hard once you put the time in
lourdes conte-oro I did the same! I just ordered mine. How did it went?
Will you share how to play Let The Circle Be Unbroken? Thanks!
Oh, dip. I have those Hollister shorts.
Mind doing one of these for lukey's boat?
Can you do a tutorial on Touch the sky on the mandolin?
Jesse- I've also heard a variation of the lyrics "Stand and deliver for the Devil he may take ya" I guess its all the same. I might take up the mandolin now. It doesn't seem that different from the banjo.
dude could you do a lesson for Monaghan jig?
Hi Jesse great learning site. I have just taken up mandolin and am trying to find the chords for when I'm dead and gone was maguiness flint. I wander if you know the song the chords would be great thanks
Hi Jesse, can you show us any bluegrass classics? Thx
So I'm new to the mandolin as well but I've been playing the french horn for 9 years so I'm not new to music. A few things are confusing to me in this video. One is when you slow down the strum pattern, it seems as if you're playing it in a different pattern than when you play it in the song. Slowed down is 1 2 & 3 & (eighth notes) and when played to speed it's 1 2 a 3 & (sixteenth notes). Also, are you playing another chord when you switch from the Am to F? Sorry, I probably didn't explain that very well, but in my opinion, it would be easier if you slowed down the song a lot more but played it exactly as you would full speed.
6 years later so TRUE
lovely :) I have a mandolin that's ,5 stringed in India...now how do I play with it..... Mandolin music is lovely anyways.... :)
Tune it to CGDAE, figure out the chords here
www.looknohands.com/chordhouse/guitar/index_rb.html

Aye that's a fine English Gents voice you have there!!!😉
hi Jesse I bought a mandolin and will be receiving it tomorrow I am excited to play it. but can you please do a video on how to tune it? :)
+Stevie Roder if you have a tuner its tuned to G-D-A-E (Thick string to thin)
+Mike Piercey thanks so much for the helpful tip highly appreciate it. :)
+Stevie Roder no problem....I too am quite a beginner at mandolin I've been playing guitar for nearly 10 years and with any instrument it's the best bet to get a teacher....hope you have some fun! Peace man
new to your site. Like your stryle. New to Mando, are there simplier chords for beginners?
Welcome, Stewart! I think the mando chords I play are the simplest ones possible, mostly using just two fingers.
Can u post godfather and captain corelli mandolin song
Бик матур! I Like it :)
Basque variations on a melody. Challenge accepted
