  • Teaching a Greyhound Stairs.
    A video of how we taught our adopted greyhound Scout how to climb stairs. Scout was 4 years old when we brought her home and was not able to climb stairs and she found them scary. In this video we show how we overcame this challenge and show some ways that may help teaching your dog stairs #dog vlog #greyhound video #greyhoundadoption #newgreyhound #greyhound #greyhounds #greyhoundlife #greyhoundtips

    Clever girl! It must be so daunting for them to begin with, and it is wonderful to see how confident she is now. Having Magnus to show her she can do it must have been a calming presence for her. Pats for Magnus and Scout xx

    Must be scary to have to go head first down a flight of stairs, especially for the first time. Finding a smaller less steep set of stairs is a great idea for starting them off!! Sending love from Canada 💕

    Brought Tully home in the morning, showed him the garden, went for a short walk - all good. Bedtime - last widdle in the garden - us thinking how will he cope with the stairs. Haha, he was up there like greased lightning! He will not go out first thing for a pee - has a lie in (with us) and only gets up when we’re both dressed. What joy he has brought. Good technique for the newbie dog thanks for showing this.

    When I had my greyhounds, my home didn't have stairs - but my workplace did. One day on the weekend, I had to pick something up at the office, and decided to take my dogs with me, and I didn't even think about it. They followed me up the stairs no problem. But... when it was time to leave, as soon as we got near the stairway to go down, they froze in their tracks. They evidently saw the route down as nothing but a drop off a cliff. So one at a time, I had to carry an 80 and then 90 pound (36 and 41 kg) dog down the stairs (they were tall, even for greyhounds). Easier than upstairs I suppose. After that, I of course taught them how to do stairs!

    • @magnusgreyhound
      @magnusgreyhound  Před 3 lety

      Luckily Magnus can do the stairs as he is around 40kg so a heavy load to carry.

    We were so lucky with Donal our 3 years old Irish ex-racer, he figured out stairs all on his own and now rips up and down them chasing after our 10mo old Whippet Pup, or visiting me in the workshop. Great tips in case I decide to get a third.

    We don't have stairs but our greyhound has a fear of slick or wooden floors. Resulted in a lot of rugs and runners placed throughout the house so he's comfy getting around. We didn't realize this when we first adopted him and he got panicked and started sliding/running/and got all splayed out off his legs on the floor. Fortunately he didn't get injured. Been doing great for a year now though! Unfortunately he's at the vet tonight getting a ruptured anal gland treated, poor guy. No big deal though.....anti biotics and has to wear his muzzle for a week to not lick with a modified stool guard in it so he can still drink water freely.

    This is really helpful! We're bringing home our first greyhound in a couple of weeks (from the same rescue as Magnus and Scout I believe!) and we live on the top floor of a tenement, so we'll definitely need to do lots of stair training with her. Luckily I can think of a few places nearby with steps that we can use to train her. I'm sure she'll figure it out soon enough if she needs to go up and down them to go out for walks and the toilet.

    I'll be curious to see if we can get our pupper to go up and down our stairs. We have steeper stairs than you do, with a weird landing before the bottom floor that isn't super wide/long. I've also heard its not the best for dogs to use stairs because of joint issues, but it'd be a darn shame to have our dog only be down in the living room/kitchen. I guess it will just be something we attempt, and see if it's safe enough for him to do it unsupervised. We had an older family dog do it, which surprised us, she just really wanted to come up and see what we were doing we had no idea she even attempted it until we saw her in the hallway hahaha, and her younger sister wouldn't even attempt the stairs, so maybe there's hope!

    • @magnusgreyhound

      When we switched to training Scout outside to learn stairs, it then took about a week to build up from 1 or 2 steps up to 10 or 12 steps. Once she had this we tried again at home. She was able to do them by the 2nd attempt. A week after that she was running up and down the stairs.
