Mercury is all that’s left of American Marine outboards. I hope they make it.
Keikhaeffer an invenror in pure form a trully entrepreneur, a man of vision and determination, really inspiring.
Thanks screamandfly for posting this rare piece of our industrial history.
I'm proud to say that I love working for this great company.. The best motors we make out in the ocean waters
After Yamaha :D
mercury outboards ,tough as nails !
Not boring if you're a lover of antique outboards!
Carl's best move in the first few days of reopening was to rehire Thorwald's key employees to help him understand exactly what had taken place and what was needed to fix the core issues of the Thor product line. Having this accurate production snapshot combined with the funding needed and Carl's understanding of Magnetics put Carl on the rebound trail quick.
Scream & Fly rules. Thanks Greg!
That's amazing
my 1971 merc snowmobile has one of his engines in it a 440 readvalve one of the best engines ive ever owned
Evinrude/Johnson and Mercury are the best outboards on the water.
@mrpierce1000 Got news for you. Yamaha and Mercury are the same powerhead except in fishing motors.
The Merc fishing motors are Tohatus.
ha I like the Mercury's they are the best and they are darn good I swear by the Mercs they are darn great motors as an old salty I personally don't like the Yamaha outboards they are known to give trouble that's what I knew in the outboard trade I did some work internship at a outboard shop in Australia and knew a lot about the outboards that's are known to be trouble that's my personal knowledge from years of boating here in Australia 25yrs of boating and related stuff that's how I knew the outboard trade
Yamaha, also from a marine mechanic, although as "smileleeannashere" says Mercury do make the best race engines.
Some of that footage looks familiar. Animations too.
The Iron Fist
A book that has much more info. about Carl Keikhaefer and Mercury
Is this guy still around? I need him to help me change the seals in my lower unit.
mercury was a very nice sounding motor six stacked cylinders awesome but the Evinrude v four caught mercury by surprise better tuning of carbs and easy maintenance but they did not have that look and sound they had deeper sounding where mercury felt like they were going somewhere fast and it was in the sound I loved them both but allways had Evinrude and my friends had mercs when they went out of tune they looked me up to get out sking I had a gt-150 with a Evinrude 115 and they both had 140 hp six mercs on checkmate and a sidewinder
slimjim can go blow rcpro17 to keep them busy.this is awesome i never seen this, hope their is some lake x stuff on youtube
@jhs5150 how is this news almost all engines on the water are outboards so pretty much all mercs and yamahas are different
Hola
Don't run them dry n replace often . drive shaft should be greased yearly as well as mounting hardware for salt water application . 37yrs in boat repair I've seen a bit . most what I've owned been mercs . !
Kevin Hoffman my father would only run mercury outboards, I'm the same way. Nothing better!
Like all great company’s it’s lost it’s way and doesn’t care
@mrpierce1000 Wha????
@jhs5150 outboard equals fishing motor duh
The internal reed valve block sucks! Even Mercury eventually abandoned it for a reed assembly that could be replaced without tearing down the entire engine.
I agree I got a yamaha motor and things started falling off of it so I sold it quick dam chinese toy
Only thing i don't like about Mercury is the rubber water pump
the rubber fails if run without water or left sitting from age.
there's got to be a better way of pumping water though the engine
all outboards that I know of have a rubber impeller.
It's a maintenance item - - like wiper blades on a car.
Some people change them annually.
The rubber water pump impellers are still in use in both outboard and inboard/outboard applications. Most owners wait till they fail to replace them. Premature failure is usually caused by owners who start the motor with the lower unit out of the water, not knowing that the life expectancy of an impeller without water is 20 seconds..max.
Kiefaher Left Evinrude and started building Mercury’s in the 30’s. They were always “paint it purple” engines until Brunswick Bowling Ball Co. got tricked into buying them. They had to buy Boston Whaler and almost killed it to sell their crappy engines. Finally, after many expensive years of R and D, they are now one of the best engines made. But the little ones are still made in China and they are shit! GlennFHoward
if you want to get there first you buy a mercury if you always want to get there and get back you buy a yamaha and i dont know about honda but i hear those are good engines and i never see any evinrudes on the water so they are problay to expensive or they suck
hahaha fired from everscrewed, ill bet they wish they hadnt of done that...
So are RC's. There's nothing unique about them.
