    I will verify the loss of elevation availability with the wind-age increase to the point I had to shim the mount of a M1A, which is a squirrelly deal to begin with. It was a pain in that application and was a great deal on my RPR until I desired a lit reticle on the app. Well that is why a wanted the tree and will just use that and adjust for various ammo. Good scope for the price and a value, just have a squared away host mount... Great review.

    I love my vortex venom. I’ve never trusted vortex because of the bad product reviews on the budget oriented optics but I had to give this one a chance. And compared to my arken sh4 gen 2, and my ep4. This vortex glass was distinctly more clear along with my Nikon black fx1000.

    • @ronws2007
      @ronws2007 Před rokem +2

      I still love my Venom, too. And, an update. I did buy some Arken scopes. The glass was comparable but everyone was talking about it like the neatest thing since sliced bread. Again, glass was pretty close and I still prefer the sight picture of the Venom, present company of Rex excluded. And on these scopes, I would not test to extreme. But the problem I have had on more than unit is that the set screws that hold the scales let go, all by themselves, sitting in the gun cabinet for a month undisturbed. They just work themselves loose. I do not know if it is a warranty issue. Seems more like a design problem. Vortex approach is the cap screw. Here is how many times a Vortex scale slipped by itself in use or in storage - zero times.
      Arken does have the illumination that somehow runs down the battery and I just about never use it.
      Maybe I am just lucky. In my Vortex collection I have the 3-9X40 Dead-Hold (SFP), two of the Diamondback Tactical 6-24X50, and three of the Venom 5-25X56. Not a single one of them has had a failure. I have had one fast lever fail and that is not a big deal. And, while hunting, I have found that I do not need to change mag all the time. I range the distance I am looking at, set elevation. The steady wind I can encounter is worth about 1/4 MOA windage, almost not worth dialing. Set elevation for distance, set mag on 10 - 12, stay warm and drink water.
      Plenty of other places where the range is 71 yards. Keep the scope on zero, no windage, dial the mag back to maybe 6. Drink water, stay warm.
      If I was getting into mile shots, I would go with a heavier rifle and probably look to get a 12-60X60 and zero at 200 yards. But I could still use this Venom if I put it on a canted rail.

    • @lukecurnutte2000
      @lukecurnutte2000 Před rokem

      @@ronws2007they don’t just work themselves loose sitting still because that’s impossible. Maybe you overtightened and it strained the screws enough to make them stretch. But things don’t just move without outside elements.

    • @ronws2007
      @ronws2007 Před rokem

      @@lukecurnutte2000 Actually, if you had bothered to look, you would find a few more videos on YT showing the same problem. True, screws don't just walk back out by themselves. My problem was after a range trip. The vibration of firing the weapon cause it to happen. And not just to me but others. So, here is how many times my Venom had the turrets slip. Zero.
      I got a response from Arken tech support and the suggested Vibra Tite on the set screws. And that did seem to work, so far. Here is how many times I have had to put thread locker on my Venom. Zero.
      Will Rex do an update about this? Who knows.

      @@ronws2007there is the clarification. You set just sitting in the safe. Of course shooting vibration can cause then to back out. I have a sh4 gen 2 and I’m less than impressed. The company as a whole is also very shady. Paying people to shill their products. Like that asshat boomer cyclops.

    So it's pretty rare for anyone to dial 5 mils of windage. The most windage I've ever had to use was 2 mils and that was on a moving target at 600-700 yards. In the midwest we typically don't get wind above 15 mph, but even still I find most shooters hold windage in the reticle for both wind and movers. For the price point, I'd say this scope has great value. I prefer the high end (Razor, Mark5HD, etc) but this one is a good starter long range scope.

  • @ronws2007
    @ronws2007 Před 2 lety

    A great review. I have 3 Venoms but I have not tested them that far. As for how much windage you can dial, I would imagine that is a bigger concern in PRS.
    The intended use will have some effect. The author of my favorite book on long range shooting was a sniper team leader in the 1st Ranger Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment for a few tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. He almost never dialed the windage turret. He would dial elevation for distance based on DOPE if had been to the location or one similar before. As for windage, he was shooting less than 500 yards with a .300 Win Mag and only had to hold left or right edge of target based on wind direction and he would get to near of center of mass, which was the objective. And when he first started in training, they made him use iron sights so that he could concentrate on basics. Later, when approaching 800 yards in training, they would bring in optics.
    Funny thing is, I put these Venoms on, which are probably overkill for hunting deer around 100 yards. So, now, on my favorite hunting rifle, I put an Arken SH4 Gen 2 4-16X50mm because it has illumination and zero stop, features I wanted but the Vortex models don't quite match that at the price point of Arken.
    But I still like Vortex. The Diamondback Tactical is good if you can live with the turret marks not quite lining up with the alignment mark on the body. The Crossfire II 3-9X40mm I have is good for hunting if you are looking for 1 MOA, ish and are not shooting much past 300 yards. Or just zero it for PBR at about 25 yards or so.

    • @chasehunt6497
      @chasehunt6497 Před 2 lety

      In my opinion whole different ball game. The class is slightly better, but you get illumination and locking turrets. I think it pushes into pst category just because the current pst is a little outdated. You pay 3-400 more msrp over the strike eagle for a small bump in glass, smaller tube and objective, and a non-locking turret system

    Where’s the comprehensive review of the arken Ep5 u promised? I have one haven’t got to use it yet so I’m neutral for now but I would love to see u compare it to maybe a Midas tac or ares btr as I’ve looked at the other two n never got to look through em I jus bought the arken on a leap of faith while also knowing that if I’m dissatisfied I can get my money back out of it especially right now but I’m waitin to give it a full running at the range tomorrow can’t wait!!!

A day later rec. email stating my order was canceled but the bullets were still in stock and I could reorder for the new price, approx 2.5 times the original price. OP. Never again.

    I have been reviewing the diamondback vortex and the venom, both vortex failed because the reticle does not rise vertically completely, the turret has slack and the eye release also. That's why I moved to Arken and I didn't see any mechanical failure.

    I know this has nothing to do with this video, but did you see the new Kentucky ballistics video? I watched a video you did about how you thought the slap round combination with the muzzlebrake was to blame for the catastrophic failure of the Serbu. He did the test again, but had a different muzzlebrake on the Rifle… I was wondering if you had seen it and shared with the SOP with him that you talked about before. Thanks! He seems to be blaming this on an overcharges round.
