    Thank you for clearing up my confusion over the bridge.
    I was hoping that the exfiltration was a false ending and there would be a bomb in the middle of the bridge you'd have to go back for. Then being ambushed by snipers would have been such a great little surprise.

    The lack of enemy snipers has been disappointing. SE5 as a whole has been a lot easier than 3 & 4. I’d like to see the radioman brought back but with the alarms. I’ll intentionally set off the alarms just to have more enemies to kill. I wish they’d have the enemies swarm attack on the harder level settings. I think the enemy ai was better on se4

      Especially considering in the trailer you see two of them standing by the furthest crash site looking towards the bridge but they are not there in the final product. Even the checkpoint at the south end of the bridge has a sniper in the tower in the trailer.

      Biggest flaw in SE5 AI in campaign is they're much less aggressive, never push and too afraid to fight Karl. Even Jager is don't like push.
      What frustrated me the most is in SE5 Survival mode AI is just like in SE4! They're always try to swarm player, very aggressive and very fun to play.
      Shame that I really like gun gameplay in SE5 but fighting enemies in campaign is turned me off.

    I entirely agree on SE5 being way too hand holdy in terms of difficulty. I was really hoping they would eventually be able to give us a mission just as if not more challenging than Deathstorm Part III, however the AI themselves are made to be easy mode. There's no radio operators that overwhelm you with reinforcements, no Jager or Valkyrie Jager troops to soak up your poorly placed shots, no spotters to force you out of power positions, and so forth. SE4's enemies actually functioned so well, I have to question why they did this. Was it for the casual audience they anticipated? Was it bad programming? We'll never know.

    Bought the DLC but have yet to play. Thanks for the review. Disapointing to hear about the Mosin. While I enjoy different types of rifles on different maps and to keep things fresh, the Mosin was my overall favorite in SE4. Not sure why they nerfed it like that... Strange decision.

  • @English_Speaking_Fox
    @English_Speaking_Fox Před rokem +5

    It is a concern that after all the clamour for the Mosin and its historical status in the game as an elite long-range rifle, Rebellion has gone and pitched it as a medium-weight that doesn’t really do anything particularly well. Are they listening to the fans? Or deliberately goading us? It’s almost as if they said okay, yeah whatever, well here you go, hope you like it but honestly we couldn’t really care either way.

    It is indeed a great fun invasion map - on authentic. There have been loads of skilled players on in the last 48hrs and I’ve had a fabulous time with some of them - especially the mobile ones.
    Odd decision to nerf the famed Moisin. Deffo a missed opportunity for a massive shootout on the bridge.
    I collected what seemed like 20 satchel charges - only needed 2! Generally fewer mines to collect.

  • @English_Speaking_Fox
    @English_Speaking_Fox Před rokem +5

    Another excellent review. I think you’ve gone a little easy on Rebellion this time round, because to be fair it’s glaringly obvious that they’ve dumbed down this mission after initially planning a far greater spectacle, something we have been craving for ages! You will have seen the comments on Reddit about the difficulty and I’m glad you have addressed that forthrightly as it is a huge disappointment for veterans of the series.
    I didn’t want to get into the bridge issue on Reddit because it would potentially spoil the “surprise” for others. Jeez was I annoyed about that damn bridge. I concluded after an hour of going back-and-forth that they had removed a lot of content, exactly as you have laid out, as from the mission intelligence gathered along the way, I was excitedly expecting a big shoot out… which never came. The end of the mission was therefore another colossal letdown. I felt the same way at the end of this mission as I did after I had killed Moller in mission 9. Deeply annoyed to be frank.
    It seems pretty clear that Rebellion has had some major changes of direction during the development of #5. We can put some of the shortcomings & bugginess of the initial release down to the pandemic, and the need to meet certain deadlines. I will never believe in a million years that Loose Ends wasn’t originally planned to be a full mission with a big finale. In the DLC, the story has withered away - with the death of Moller nothing sequential has evolved from Landing Force, Conqueror or Rough Landing - yet they would have you believe that Karl found some Kraken related intelligence in Rough Landing according to the mission debriefing??? I have been through all the collectables from Rough Landing and cannot find anything remotely Kraken related. So I conclude that they’ve just made that last bit up in a vain effort to tie something together. Well it’s not working.
    But after all the complaints (and you have hinted at this in your review), the bottom line is that this is an excellent map for 1v1 Axis Invasion. This becomes very evident immediately you start playing Authentic difficulty games as either Karl or the Invader. There was a whole bunch of Authentic games on the first night after the DLC was released and it was great fun playing them, and notably a lot harder than previous levels. (Another clue is the distinct lack of mines available to Karl on this level.) And this is my conclusion - Rebellion has changed tack and decided to develop maps for Invasion over campaign. They are changing the development brief halfway through and curtailing the content and difficulty of the maps in favour of 1v1 Axis Invasion, except they keep leaving annoying clues as to what they originally intended in the game just to frustrate us! They must have data that says 1v1 Axis Invasion is the way to go otherwise they wouldn’t have done it.
    Time will tell whether or not their fanbase agrees. Personally I think there’s a whole bunch of changes they will need to make to keep maps like this interesting for veteran Invasion players. For example they have to do away with the stupid Focus skill that ruins tense games if Karl elects to play SE (Hard) or lower. Why should Karl be able to see through walls? It is infuriating for the Invader to spend all that time locating Karl without using the phone, and stealthing into an ambush position undetected, only for you to get a sticky grenade on the head because Karl is scanning ahead with Focus mode… silly, unrealistic and basically mandated cheating!
    Anyway another great review and thanks for taking the time to deliver the best content on our favourite game.

    • @BrutalBarracuda
      @BrutalBarracuda  Před rokem +1

      I think Invasion has taken off more than anyone anticipated it would. Its a great addition to the game. But they shouldn't be dumbing down the missions for it. As for the intel that relates to Kraken, I'm pretty certain they are talking about the film cannister taken from the reconnaissance planes. They are indicating that the planes found evidence that Kraken has not been completely destroyed. And yes focus mode should never have been introduced into the game and it 100% ruins Invasion.

    • @English_Speaking_Fox
      @English_Speaking_Fox Před rokem +1

      @@BrutalBarracuda I wondered whether it would be the film canister but the lac of content relating to it makes the continuation of the Kraken theme tenuous at best. It struck me in Landing Force and definitely in Conqueror that we’d lost the overall purpose to the missions, the thread that was holding the whole thing together, building towards a grande finale. But thanks for pointing it out as I think my annoyance about the bridge has probably overridden my objectivity!

    • @English_Speaking_Fox
      @English_Speaking_Fox Před rokem +2

      @@BrutalBarracuda Yes I agree that there is clearly a massive compromise w.r.t. Invasion. Me and my two sons all play the series and we had a good chat about Rough Landing last night. We talked about the amount of times we replayed the SE4 Deathstorm series, about how challenging it was to even achieve Authentic+. The unanimous conclusion was that this latest release is the nail in the coffin for campaign replayability for SE5.
      It is interesting that my one son has totally lost interest in Axis Invasion and consequently isn’t playing SE5 at all any more. He got bored playing noobs on easy difficulty and very frustrated with the skills available to experienced (40 score) Karl on SE (Hard). The other son tends to play mostly within a group of friends - only Authentic - sometimes he will sit for a couple of hours and just smash noobs on Atlantic Wall and Occupied Residence as a way to decompress from his busy day at work. (I’ve watched him doing this and he’s not even thinking about it, just autopilot.)
      I am still playing Axis Invasion and building a group of PlayStation friends around the world, its starting to pay dividends as there are enough guys out there wanting to tough it out on Authentic who want to find these difficult games without having to wade through all the noobs to get there. It’s definitely the right way for me to go about it because I am on the console and at a tremendous disadvantage in CQC versus PC players. (My two sons kick my arse every time as they are both on PC.)
      In time I think we will look at Sniper Elite 5 as the release where Rebellion learned the hard way you cannot have your cake and eat it. Diehard campaign players with no interest in PvP are going to lose interest in this release real quick. There’s just nothing to keep you going back. But Axis Invasion has brought a whole new level of interest and if that gets you going then you’ll keep coming back. The challenge for me will be whether there are enough Authentic players that feel the same and are available for a game when I want to play. The risk that Rebellion is taking is they are turning off the campaign replay players in favour of Axis Invasion players. Time will tell if this is the way to go.

    • @BrutalBarracuda
      @BrutalBarracuda  Před rokem +1

      Exactly, having a proper hard difficulty will keep veterans of the series coming back. Its no fun for us to easily breeze through the missions, we need to be challenged and unfortunately SE5s Authentic difficulty is hell and gone from the Authentic difficulties we have come to know and love from SE3 and SE4. I myself, have also quit Invading players because I too am just bored of invading either noobs on Atlantic wall, or good players who play on Hard (Sniper Elite difficulty) just so they get their focus mode and can up there Invasion kill counts. As you say hopefully Rebellion will learn from SE5 to make SE6 amazing.

      the big hard anti consumer point is that the servers and the community are only going to be available for a limited time. and while that didnt bother me with the multiplayer modes in #3 and #4 as i never touched them at all it is apparent that as of now the "together" content has creeped up on the solo content and is going to replace and devalue it forever to an extent - while the campaign levels in previous games could be enjoyed 100% like they were designed to be at release.
      my theory has nothing to do with playtime at all that is just mouthwash for greedy corporate pigs. whaat really drives a salesman into these decisions is the cash: #5 has way more and more expensive weapon dlc than any of its predecessors. so in order to extract as much cash from the pvp community they cannot allow content to be played without creating fomo for the next paid shiny bangbang. i did not need any weapon dlc in #4 but i may feel an exponentially stronger need to buy all of them in #5. and thats manipulative as it is disgusting.

    Patrols would be nice, with all the paths around. I'm surprised how few panzerfaust troopers there were (if any?); just parking in the top of the windmill silo is too easy. Real Germans wouldn't hesitate to just spray lead through the wood I imagine, but these all need to run up in your face first. The tanks need a gunner who's willing to get up on the machine gun, like in Secret Weapons. The sniper trap sounds like a fun idea, too bad they didn't think of it. The board is nice, but they all seem just small compared to SE4. I thought there would be more AI movement using vehicles after seeing the first board, but seems like that went by the way side. Definitely would be cool to have field radio operators with the field units, and officers who actually use the radio installations we keep running into. The shu mine is cool, but I miss trip mines. Be nice if the shu mine had a trip string mode rather than 5 and 30 second firecrackers. base mode, string mode, 10 second firecracker mode.
    I like SE4, I like SE5, but I just don't get that looking forward to "play it again" for the campaign boards with SE5 as I had with SE4. Seems to be limited in the creativity options in how you can approach a lot of the target groups. Invasions in both are a lot of fun. I don't do multiplayer.

    A good and well balanced review. I have read all the comments and I can agree to most but, there is always a but……. I think everyone is going to have differing opinions on a game and some games do not always meet people’s expectations. I loved playing SE4 and I can remember almost giving up on it as I thought a level I got stuck on was impossible but I learned how to play it a bit better and eventually completed every mission many, many times and I never got bored of it. I am 71, play on PS4 just for entertainment and this game has more hours on it for me than any game I have ever played.
    I almost didn’t get SE5 as there were so many negative comments about it but I bit the bullet, so to speak, and I love it. This new mission I also thought was a tad easy but the map itself is, for me, stunning. I do tend to have favourite maps that I just go to for the fun of it and this map is one of those. I like to take my time, two hours on this map is not unusual for me, I wish they would have ration packs so I could sit, make a brew, and admire the scenery 🤣🤣🤣.
    I can understand that hardened players may be disappointed how easy this map can be and I respect their views on wanting a harder challenge but a lot of players also play just for the fun of it and this map is fun for us armchair snipers. I do hope it is a test bed for introducing NPCs as I really liked that aspect also the fact that the ‘map with scribbles on’ at the resistance camp adds to the main map. I like the alternate starting points in all the maps, they do make it a different experience so yes, I do like it as a map for my way of playing and I will be creeping round it for many games to come.

    It’s been interesting reading the comments on this review. If Rebellion doesn’t start to get the message now then there’s no hope for SE6, if there’s ever going to be one. The lack of fight / difficulty is a consistent complaint now. It will be a lot of work for Rebellion to work out how to balance a challenging campaign with invasion mode, and a lot of work means a lot of cost and we all know where the cost ends up in the long run… with the consumer. Sometimes I wonder if invasion mode is a completely separate game. The studio might have forgotten to consider the Law of Unintended Consequences… by introducing something undeniably exciting in Axis Invasion, they have ruined what made SE4 so excellent. And I’m not sure that the veteran fan base is going to forgive them for that. So Rebellion, get to work.

      @English_Speaking_Fox Před rokem

      @@BrutalBarracuda There’s a bunch of other stuff they need to do as well. Like re-employ all the people that coded SE4.
      I packed a sad last night and gave up with Rough Landing. It’s a visually appealing environment but that is as far as I can go with the positives. Yes it can be an exciting map for Axis Invasion but if you try and do a professional Authentic job as Karl you’re going to come up against some very poor quality NPC awareness code. NPC awareness on Authentic difficulty is ridiculously inconsistent.
      An example: Stealth your way from the south end of the bridge to the waterfall with the pilot in the cave. You can deliberately get the attention of the one NPC near the ruined cabin, to the point that he starts shooting at you with his SMG and throws a grenade. Yet the NPC in the cabin a tad further on (about 20m away) carries on talking to himself about how lonely he is, and none of the NPCs around the crash site by the waterfall react whatsoever.
      Bang bang bang BOOM…. Absolutely nothing. Nada.
      But wait, it gets better…. If you stealth past the mineshaft into the building behind the machine-gun nest that overlooks the rail yard, you can whistle as much as you like from the doorway and neither of the two NPC’s will react. But God forbid you throw a bottle back into the workshop (away from the rail yard) to get their attention… Not only do the two NPCs react, so does the entire rail yard. My invader (who was sitting in the bedroom next door) called over and said hey you knob, wtf did you just do, the whole yard is on red alert. The sniper over 100m away immediately started shooting at me and the alarm was raised. Because I broke a bottle 50m away. Jeez that sniper must have good hearing. Shame about his mates down the way, they must’ve all been drafted in from an artillery regiment as they’re all stone deaf.
      This kind of thing is simply down to very poor coding. Casual gamers probably won’t get hung up about this stuff but the hard-core fans will be turned right off the game if they can’t play it the way it’s intended. There are numerous inconsistencies like this - another good example is how you can climb up the ladder into the Windmill and have the sniper look right at you, yet he still doesn’t react. But fart 100m away over by the AA gun and its instant detection!
      So very frustrating.

    Maybe you'll know since you tend to analyze and break down gear attributes. The Welrod. Power is meh, audible range is excellent. Problem is you rarely get a one shot kill, and it seems your odds are drastically reduced if you use sub ammo so I've been using AP. The game doesn't do a good job of telling you how much that changes the audible range though except for the exclamation point. So here's the rub. For the best quiet, one shot stealth gun. A Welrod with AP ammo, or an M1911 with sub ammo?

    • @BrutalBarracuda
      @BrutalBarracuda  Před rokem +2

      Go into loadout and customistation at the main menu, customise both guns however you want them, then go to the top and click on the special ammo, then as you highlight different ammos the stats will change accordingly. The M1911 set to max damage with quietest suppressor and sub sonic ammo will do 65 damage at 18m audible range. The welrod set to max damage with AP ammo will do 105 damage at audible range of 14m or 85 damage at 7 metre audible range. AP ammo doesnt lower the guns damage, but sub sonic rounds do. AP ammo also doesnt change the guns audible range either. But dont forget the M1911 is way more customisable and can be essentially turned into an OP mini sniper. I use the welrod as its more of a challenge, M1911 makes the game way too easy.

  • @Nifter71
    @Nifter71 Před rokem

    The first and most important thing to say about SE5 is that, yes, it's too easy. And the principal reason for that, is that sniping is now FAR too easy compared to the game's predecessors. And the main reason for that is the wind. While SE4 was often a little too brutal on windage at hardest settings, SE5's wind compensation is virtually non-existent.
    Also (and Brutal can correct me here if I'm wrong?), I'm pretty sure the wind indicator on all previous games was harder to use, because it didn't line up the indicator right over the target. Right? Instead, it gave you an estimation for wind compensation that was not so precise, and that required a certain intuition. Now, wind compensation is even easier than adjusting for distance.
    As Brutal said, no-one objects to having easier options for new players. But SE5 is clearly alienating seasoned fans of the series by making sniping too easy. In SE4, regularly pulling off accurate one-shot kills over 150m is an achievement. Nailing targets at 250+ is difficult, and 300m - 500m is a punch-the-air moment.
    In SE4, firing a first shot to range it in, and then adjusting for the second, is common at extreme distances - as it should be IMO (unless you're a beast - which I'm not!). On top of that, sniping was harder again, on each version, going all the way back to SE1, which I played in 2005!
    But sniping now is a piece of piss. I don't feel the same sense of achievement when I nail a long shot.
    I get wanting to attract more noobs - no problem. But, letting players play the way they want to should go BOTH ways, and the people who've stayed with the series are chief amongst those who find the game unchallenging now. I can't count the number of comments I've read on SE5 videos, both here and elsewhere, where people are saying they're deliberately letting the alarms go off, in order to generate more enemies?! That's ridiculous. As Karl, you should FEAR the alarm. You should be DESPERATE to sabotage it... you should be racing to shoot that Nazi before he gets to it. Not sitting there, deliberately keeping enemies alive in the hope that one of them will set it off again... to being 'reinforcements' aka another 3 -5 men!
    So, at least as an option for players that want an actual challenge (Authentic +?), we need:
    a) More enemies - the maps are getting emptier. (And why no spotters? They used to be such a threat in SE4.)
    or
    b) Harder sniping - Up the wind somewhat. Wind compensation PLUS distance compensation: that's what used to make sniping challenging in this series.
    I've previously suggested reducing found stashes too. While the found-weapons mechanic in SE5 is one of the newer features that's actually an improvement IMO, there's waaay too much ammo etc. to be found just lying around. Running out is never a risk. After one play-through, you'll never need to worry about managing your resources again.
    Regarding the lack of enemies, I think you're right - the only rationale has to be that Rebellion (or whoever is making these DLCs now?) thought that reducing Ai numbers would encourage more balanced Invasion fights? I rarely play Invasion, so maybe someone who does could chip in there... how is Invasion on Conqueror and Rough landing especially? Does reduced Ai make Invasion a better match..?

    • @Nifter71
      @Nifter71 Před rokem

      My question has been answered below.
      It's all about 'INVASION' now!
      I wish Rebellion had just made Invasion-only maps from the start...
      But I guess they will do as business do, and invest the map-making time in what generates more cash. Which must now be understood to be Invasion mode.

    • @BrutalBarracuda
      @BrutalBarracuda  Před rokem +1

      Yes, on all previous sniper elites the wind gauge was simply a tool too show how strong the wind is, you had to figure out how that would effect the bullet yourself. Now, on SE5, it is used to show exactly where to aim, simply line up the wind marker over the target, same with the distance marker over the target and that's a hit. Its basically another aim assist but one that we cannot turn off! CANNOT TURN OFF! That's stupid. Like you say nailing a 200-300 metre shot on SE4 was a satisfying moment. Getting the same shot on SE5 is so easy, there's no gratification to be had. Its just *yawn* and move on.
      Yes they should certainly bring back spotters, they were great at get you moving, stopping you getting too comfortable and just camping in one spot. The alarms are another aspect that seriously needs tweaking. You know when players are letting the AI set them off just so there are more enemies on the map you have a problem. If the lack of enemies on the map is down to Invasion mode then get rid of Invasion mode. Don't get me wrong, I love Invasion mode, but I don't want it if it means the campaign difficulty is going to suffer.
      In SE6 we need sniping to go back the way it was in previous sniper elites. More enemies. Better use of alarms/reinforcements. Rebellion have a lot of work ahead of them and I truly hope they learn from all the SE5 feedback. Rebellion if you are reading this, get in contact if you want advice on creating a difficulty us veterans of the series can enjoy, seriously.

    Judging by the amount of Invasion games - either as Karl or the Invader - the DLC is being widely downloaded despite the widespread criticism. The Steam rating is only 5/10. Over the weekend, playing as Invader I reckon half of all games were Rough Landing and most of those were Authentic which is the first time that’s happened. When I switched to Karl, I was consistently invaded as soon as I completed an objective and thereafter every time the cooldown ended. If SE5+DLC revenues hit or exceed the developer’s targets, with the game dumbed down as it has been, it is not a confidence inspiring indication of where the game might head in the future… I’ll be gutted if the heart & soul of Sniper Elite is lost to casual gaming, just as the incredible 4K graphics tech becomes affordable.

    I Loved the mosin nagant in SE4 but here I’m disappointed!!! The choices of scopes are very mediocre and the choices of suppressors is Bad also !!! I like my Gewehr rifle and the RCS rifle

    Long shot was very disappointing. It was literally the second dude I randomly shot from my starting position.

    It's Invasion Mode lol
    Reb should've just made it a separate mode that uses simplified maps instead of watering down the campaign.

    Why gimp the mosin. They know that's going to aggravated a lot of people. Going from one of the best bolt action rifles to one of the worst.

    So disappointed, one play through yet again completes everything in the dlc , se4 death storm had so many achievements to complete like leaving the brothers alive on the map , killing everyone , saving the scientists, including so really tough challenges , it needed loads of play throughs for the 100% completion , and as you said only 1 armoured vehicle on the entire level , when they have boats , armoured cars , sidecars and their disposal .

    I've just completed this campaign and I have to say I was totally underwhelmed. Lack of enemies, formulaic and not at all exciting. It whimpered along until I finished it and was waiting for something to happen. Dull and a waste of my hard earned....

    Rebellion would be better off paying you to review the DLC before it’s released and make changes before it pisses people off. They are on the brink of becoming beyond irritating, it almost seems like arrogance.

    I finished ROUGH LANDING on Authentic with 3 stars and all collectibles and objectives.
    I'm underwhelmed at this sorry excuse for a mission.
    1. It feels like the other half of the map of CONQUER. It's TINY AF!!!
    2. Why are there so many satchel charges and no ability to blow up the bridge that is absolutely begging to be blown up??? WTF???
    3. New guns... whoop-dee-do... just more to master.
    Rebellion owes us all an apology for this crap! They're clearly "phoning it in" on this DLC and relying on the Sniper Elite reputation.
    Any more crap like this and I'm out of the pool.
    $30 for Season 2 Pass is a complete money grab/rip-off and you only get...
    A lousy, short, tiny 1st mission
    A yet to be released 2nd mission
    Extra guns
    Extra gun skins
    Extra player skins

    I love your reviews but to be honest this game is a total disappointment all around. It had so much potential but it just looks like rebellion just phoned it in to make a few bucks.

      @@BrutalBarracuda It really could have been. They were more interested in making weird modded weapons and camo skins that never existed and missions so easy you can run them in authentic with your eyes almost closed rather than interesting, tense, hard fighting missions requiring real skill and planning to complete. I really believe rebellion thought they could release a couple of cool trailers and stimulate a ton of sales and just sit back and reap the profits.
