    I'm honestly impressed by your decision to skip the Keddie Wye. The temptation to film there must have been overwhelming, but at the end the day, there are tons of people who got shots there, and you are the only one who got the the vast majority of the Feather River Canyon! I am so glad this video exists!

      Yes, it's great Dan got all this video. There was a TON of one-lane construction in the canyon that held people back (like me) from following it properly all the way down to Oroville. At the end of the day, I feel blessed to have seen what I did with my kids, but the construction was really bad.

Being able to see the whole train from above and the 4014 along with the beautiful scenery is quite impressive to me. And the little caboose is the icing on the cake. Just found time to watch your classic coverage of 4014 in the Feather River Canyon. It's been around 29 years since I was last there and your drone coverage shows up much more than what can be seen from the highway. I've scanned others' comments and fully understand why you skipped the Keddie Wye (others have shared their coverage there, so I haven't missed a thing).
    I have to say you must have truly been blessed to get so much and I'm sure the spirit of that long departed Western Pacific Engineer, the late James Boynton, was with you all the way. I had the privilege of meeting James and his lovely wife Betty when I went railfanning up the canyon from Sacramento to Quincy back in September 1989. Back then I was in the Railroad Industry myself in Australia and the Boyntons welcomed me as a fellow railroader into their home during my stay in Quincy.
    Thanks for your coverage of a unique event and for stirring up fond memories. 😊😊😊

      @TheRailfanDan  Před 21 dnem +1

      Thank you for your understanding about Keddie! Some have not been understanding and couldn't believe that I skipped it but I would not have achieved that long pace in the canyon if I had been at Keddie. That sounds like a great time you had when you railfanned the canyon with them in the past. Glad I could bring up some memories for you.

      Half the time a viewer has no idea the 4014 is at work. What's known is that a stream loco is running thru the canyon. The diesel is needed for dynamic braking to help the 4014 and to cut down on the wear and tear of its specialized brake shoes. In addition, the diesel is used for communications and train control. Some of these features were recently installed in the 4014.

I've traveled this route from Oroville to Portola and beyond, checking out accessible points along the way by car. Not an easy task. Your coverage of the route is just what it should be; the route and the locomotive. I don't blame you for skipping Keddie, it's been shot a billion times. But your pan of Clio. Priceless. I'm not sure where you recorded the audio, but to hear him drift downhill through the canyon with a bit of dynamics in the background is just perfect. Or am I imagining that? Thanks Dan.|
    Side note: I lived in Modesto during the first run of 4014 and felt cheated that UP didn't take him all the way to Sacramento for the sesquicentennial of the
    Transcon. Kind of a diss, when you think about it (yes, logistics, blah blah blah fuck SP). But now I live in Florida, and here they are. oy

      Thanks so much my friend! Yes the audio was taken from action in the canyon here itself from ground footage so it is as accurate as I could possibly be. I would have missed that first section in the canyon West of Virgilia for sure if I stayed for Keddie which was not worth it to me. I know it's too bad it has taken this long for them to bring it this far West.

    Dan. I have seen quite a few videos of the Big Boy going down ‘The Feather ‘, but let me tell you that yours is streets ahead of the rest. While I would like to have seen some shots on the Keddie Wye, I totally get why you skipped it. Cheers from Australia.

      Thanks so much and thanks for understanding the skip of Keddie! What those who weren't there don't know is the massive amounts of one way road work all through the canyon. It took so major planning around that.

    It seems that Big Boy had not to work since it looks go down-hill according the river flow direction. However, there is a diesel engine between.
