Nearly 450 students living in hotels as ASU dorms full

- ASU says temporary housing is not new but, a year-over-year comparison shows a steady increase. That is due to the university's growing popularity, ASU is projecting a record enrollment this fall semester, with more than 15,000 first-year students on campus. The plan is to have two new dorms built as early as 2024.

Just curious why ASU is accepting dorm students when it doesn't have enough dorm space? Couldn't be because they are greedy.
Look at their online programs!
@@jameschang2873 what about the online programs?
@@elithluxe7568 They go so many students their all about money.
Its guaranteed housing for freshman so I guess they figure it out :/
They want the money.
This is no mistake. Almost 500 students?? These schools are purposely over enrolling. The same thing happened at my Univeristy back in 2007. I had a friend living in a nearby hotel the whole first semester before on campus housing became available.
Tons of dropouts in the first semester. This guarantees the dorms wont be half empty come 2nd semester
Same problem as airlines... no shows.
I'd rather stay in a hotel tbh lol
That's wild just showing up not knowing if you're gonna live on campus. At my college they literally assigned the freshman a room. You could even exchange numbers with your roommate in advance.
@@fatboyRAY24 Right as an introvert id rather it be quiet in the dorms 😂
I remember this happened my freshman year in 2019. ASU accepting so many students without proper housing just adds to the already insane housing crisis in the Phoenix metro area.
Yep. I almost moved to Pheonix for work. Went out there to look at apartments and none of the places that were half decent had availability for almost a year and anything that did was priced gouged to the moon. Decided to change jobs after that so I didn’t have to move. Oh well
Happened to me in 2014 or 2015 and even when they got me into a dorm, it wasnt hassay, it was a honors / girls dorm and it ruined my experience.
The private bathroom and AC is worth it's weight in gold alone!
And a queen bed verses a twin bed 🛏
Shouldn't they also get housecleaning as they are paying for a hotel room
Right. Definitely some benefits. Probably alot easier to focus too
@@chuckpuck6744 I don’t think any students will really like House cleaning to move their stuff around
@@edgarh252 you don't know that to be true.
They accepted too many students and too many of them chose to go there. They need to reevaluate their calculation for acceptance/ enrollment ratio.
money
most of these kids were people who applied in the summer, bc asu does rolling admissions. the school says on the website that it will only guarantee housing to those who applied before may 15, which is basically everyone except those who applied late.
If you can and want a campus experience, explore going abroad. It was less than $15k (US) a year to send my son to the UK for university. Wasn’t Oxford or Cambridge, but there are plenty of good smaller schools without the prestige price tag. The EU countries also have some of the same. And housing can be inexpensive if you look hard enough. Public transit is great for getting places. My son has had a wonderful international experience, meeting friends from many countries. He doesn’t regret not going to a state university, and his US friends are a little envious.
What University in the UK is that?
@@beyondintervals6606 Exactly lol 15K? Im in if it's that cheap
@@ihsurart5389 - Cardiff University or University of South Wales. Plenty of amenities, and they both love international students. Beaches nearby. No, it’s not London-but it doesn’t have the London price tag. And the UK rail system is easy to ride and can get you just about anywhere you’d want to go, including the larger cities.
@@beyondintervals6606 - - see my reply in this thread to @IhsuraRT. Would add-there is a one-time cost to apply for your Tier4 student visa. The university sponsors it, and once you have it, good for duration of your studies. Can be extended for two additional years after completing uni, as a graduation visa if you wanted to stay longer and work there.
@@cb.1212 - especially true for med school. But nursing licensure as a non-US grad can be fast tracked in some cases, depending on the state. Not enough nurses to meet the overwhelming need.
i had to stay at a hotel for part of my freshmen year. while it was nicer as far as the bathroom, beds, etc, it made it harder and more inconvenient to get to classes. my hotel was “close” to campus but still far to walk. there was a bus, but the schedule was wacky for classes. it also wasn’t convenient as far as food and meal plans since my meal plans were for use at places on campus.
Bike?
@@user-360johnn America has terrible and dangerous bike infrustructure. Sure, I live a 5 minute ride from 2 grocery stores, but I would genuinely fear for my life if I tried to get to either. Hotels, especially, are built in places with high car traffic. You don't want to bike on that.
You gonna do all that the next three years anyways. I’d rather take a better living situation than the dorm experience
@@takoflame4948 i think towards the end of college i'd prefer a better living situation. But if I was a freshmen or sophomore i'd like to dorm and get the full experience
@Athena Green oh im thinking it was not that far but yeah youre right
My school did the same exact thing, accepted way more students than they had housing for to the point where many were homeless and trying to find their own housing and room with each other…
The University I went to only gives international students a priority for housing. Why? Because of the money. They dont care if you are a freshman or from Alaska. They will completely reject and make you find your own housing. It took me one month to find an apartment and it wasn't cheap, it costs a lot for a student, and finding other responsible students to pay bills on time is also a challenge.
And we all know that the foreigners are outside of the West...
@@taxthesocialist2602 are u good my man?
Which university was this?
Is that Ivy?
@@zuko803 no. It's a state college .
When i went to school in NC back in 2014, our apartment complex was not ready. I lived in a hotel for over 1 year. The good thing is we got weekly stippens for 150 bucks, and every 3 months got 500 bucks.
You can't make a mistake almost 500 times...
When I lived in a dorm room I always thought a hotel room would be an upgrade, you get a bathroom to yourself for one thing
Yep plus you get a queen bed
To avoid this, join the early start program at ASU. There's still a possibility that you might not get your assigned dorm right away, but if you want to live in the dorms I suggest doing that.
Thanks for the tip but the university also needs to stop taking money from students and FAFSA when they clearly have no space.
tbh the best bet is not to go to diploma mill ASU
As long as the price is the same as a dorm, a hotel is wayyyyyyy better
Lol they been brainwashed to think the dorm life better
This is a serious issue with colleges.
They accepted more students than they can handle.
I went to a college in NJ where this happened. It's nothing new with colleges. They are seriously mismanaged.
This actually happened to me back in my freshman year of college a few years back and I gotta be honest, I actually really liked it lol. They eventually moved me to the dorm but the hotel room was so much larger and more comfortable than the dorm, and I was in Tooker which is considered one of the nicest dorms lol
why are you lying to yourself lol, it was a fuckin hotel my guy
Might as well live with your parents
@@andrewheavenridge7955 I never said it wasn't? I don't understand. All I said was that having the space in the room and the mattress was more comfortable than that supplied by the dorm, thus for the comfortability aspect, I liked it more than the dorm. I don't know where you're getting off bud lol.
@@nicelife044 yeah for sure. Like I said it was only a few weeks and they didn't tell us until after we had paid all the housing costs and such. And ASU "requires" first years to stay in campus (though I could've gotten out if it). Doesn't matter, I loved living in the dorms and I cherish that experience
This happened to TSU in Houston, over 2,000 students had to be put into extra college apartments when they were supposed to be in dorms
Given their reputation as a top party school, makes sense why there isn’t enough space
I opted out on going to a college in person because I dislike the minimal space,
Sharing showers amongst many, and what I heard it’s not ideal. If I had an option for hotel space , that might have interested me some years ago 😂
That’s fine if you live near the college you’re going to but if not you’re gonna have to find someplace new to live. And off campus can be way more expensive than dorms
IF THE STUDENTS AND PARENTS CONTACT THE COLLEGE THEY CAN REQUEST SHUTTLE BUSES OR VANS FOR THE STUDENTS TO GET TO THE CAMPUS FROM THE HOTELS.
ALSO WITH THE CAMPUS MEAL PLANS THEY CAN ASK THE COLLEGE TO SWAP OUT HALF THEIR PLAN AND IN EXCHANGE GIVE THEM EITHER GIFT CARDS OR FOOD VOUCHERS FOR THE FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS IN THE SURROUNDING AREA.
THE COLLEGE WILL DO THIS.
Why are they accepting more students than they can house? Unfair to students
This seems like a room upgrade at no charge. Maybe they have to walk a bit more though? This is an unacceptable situation though. The amount of ASU ads I get is unbelievable and they can't even keep up...
i was a freshman during covid so campus was basically empty that year, but this year compared to 2021, i have noticed that campus is just packed. there are people absolutely everywhere, and you can tell that this is the year everybody really is either coming back to campus or coming to campus for the first time. we are seriously overpopulated. the tempe campus alone has over 55,000 students, with 75,000 in person students total and over 130,000 enrolled in either in person or fully online degrees. asu not being able to house freshman when they come to campus is a huge issue, especially when our enrollment numbers are so high as it is. i get they send out so many acceptances to meet an enrollment quota, but they need to understand that it is really possible to exceed expectations, and accidentally take more students than you can handle. more and more students are choosing our programs because of our top business school, incredible research programs and opportunities, we are highly ranked in sustainability and #1 in innovation. asu is really making a name for themselves as a tier 1 research institution. phoenix offers great opportunities for those students as well, with the mayo clinic opening in scottsdale, as well as banner health, who hire college students as medical scribes all the time. we have a good tech industry who offer great internships, as well as we have a ton of sports (NHL, NBA, NFL, WNBA, MLB) and many opportunities for sports journalism and other sports related professions. asu isn't just the "shitty state school" anymore, and they need to realize that because accepting so many students is going to end up doing more harm than good if they keep having housing issues like they have over the last few years. as a student here, and as a tour guide, there is a lot more to be said than just the housing problem. this needs to be addressed and fixed before it gets worse. you might say this is overdramatic, but all problems like this start small and blow out of control.
Welcome to the real world where corporations (like ASU) prioritize profits over the comfort of their students/clients 😃
My college also overbooked students so they turned all the double rooms into triples....that was an experience. Wish we had had the chance to live in a hotel instead!
I wished my college offered hotel housing. Housing is a big problem over here in ca as well. The neighborhood near my college is so expensive where apartments go for $3000+/month for a single bedroom. Literally hundreds of students here got waitlisted for on campus housing and they told us only weeks before school starts that we should look for off campus places. Luckily I searched for off campus housing when it was a little cheaper early in the summer. My school also said that housing for 2nd years was guaranteed when we were first years and suddenly on their website said they were not offering that anymore. And for off campus apartments its incredibly hard to find a guarantor that makes enough so that your security deposit isn't 2 months worth of rent which many college students can not afford.
Suffolk did this back in the day in Boston. Don’t know if they still do
ASU need to expand their campuses IN THE WEST SIDE OF PHOENIX!!! I’m a senior rn in high school and one of the few officer for the city ground, I can tell you that we Goodyear, verrado, and some of buckeye have enough areas for massive college area, and its mostly near the Far East and close west from the I 10. Come on education directors and OCS directors we have space!!!
A senior in high school? You’ve got a lot to learn about embezzlement and the corruption of public officials…
@@joshuad1716 what do you expect from a 2nd commissioner for city of goodyear who actually read all the data information?
How would they let this happen? It just shows greed, and poor management, stop accepting students if you don't have the space. I'd be bouncing off the walls if I paid room and board to find out I'm not actually not gonna have the convenience of being so close to my campus but in a hotel.
I would love that. Preferably without a roommate.
I stayed one night in my dorm and was like, this isn't for me.
beats living in your car at UCSB
As a senior in asu who has seen both the 2019 and 2022 dorm shortage, if you’re a freshman and seeing this, I recommend looking around at nearby apartments, while you don’t get the dorm life, usually the overall price is more worth than dorm+meal plan, when I did the math back in sophomore year it was about equal in pricing for a one bed one bath + groceries as it was with a dorm+meal plan. As well as being much more comfortable.
When that 4 year out of state tuition kicks in, The dorm situation is going to be the least of their worries.
Lol then they gonna complain why they in so much debt
I wonder do colleges still charge more for out of state students than international students?
@@sunshineandwarmth same price
Pretty sure hotels are a little bigger than dorms
The hotels are so nice compared to dorms. What’s the problem here? Is the commute to campus far?
yeah probably
Not a housing shortage, it’s a funding shortage. The federal government spends less and less on education, including public university dollars. So, increasingly universities must increase enrollment to make up for the shortfall. I don’t know much about forecasting budgets but my guess is these schools aren’t able to predict what funding they’ll receive with enough notice to build additional dormitories. Still, not a good way to operate a university. Also, tell your politicians to support education funding!
Bruh they charge 10k per year, per student. You don’t think they have enough money?
It’s Arizona, you think they’re going to fund education?
@@Johnnyy832 10k per year is nothing compared to USC where i went. USC is 70k a year
@@daquonsimmons8240 That’s just for in-state students that don’t live on campus. Out of state is ~30k per full time student. That’s with 100k+ students enrolled….
@@daquonsimmons8240 Yes, USC is more expensive. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that ASU receives major funding.
Shouldn't they also get house cleaning as they are paying for a hotel room?
Put them in mirebella kick out the grannies
Why is ASU accepting that much
Lol it’s growing like crazy because ASU has become a party school
Most students get into several schools, so it's a guessing game how many to accept so that semester isn't half empty.
It's because theyve quickly increased class sizes but not hired enough teachers and dorm building because the first requires paying teachers and second requires a few months of construction of wait more costs for universities
Trying to find housing at utd
88% acceptance rate???? practically a giant community college
Not everyone graduates
@@elithluxe7568 it’s 90% now lol
Housing is expensive and living in a hotel room is the way to go! 😍😍❤️
Where?
Trust me, that hotel room is 10 times nicer than any dorm on campus. No reason to complain.
I see what you mean but keep in mind that the students would have to find transportation to move everything to the dorm. It won’t be so easy for the students who are out of state too
I dont care. The hotel room more than makes up for it lmao
If only it provides complimentary breakfast, I know the students would have no complaints then haha
@@WYTJB You’re either a fool or a lonely anti-social guy, which is it JW? 🤨
Yea but some students who have dorms are from out of state and can’t afford to do a daily Uber to campus
they're being charged the same as a dorm?
Exactly because especially a Sleep Inn choice brands hotel is not cheap so it would be interesting to see how it compares at a monthly costs to a dorm
a hotel room does not cost as much as a dorm room. they should find their own hotel room or find a room to rent.
Numero uno in innovation baybee 😎
those tuitions are just too juicy to turn away. Clearly this university cares more about the money than their students.
Hope all of you are ready to get hustled for that piece of paper. Once the economic slow down happens, there will be too much competition
Glad I'm an online student
Yearly. This happens yearly.
Why does anyone move here for out-of-state in the first place. I understand if it is in-state, but record-breaking numbers here for out-of-state??
A lot of reasons, ASUs much easier to get into than a lot of universities, to party, the valley and Arizona are nicer than a lot of other places in America and never get cold, etc
A lot of people in america go out of state for college to get a fresh experience away from home and party
ASUs the #1 party school in america
Actually living in hotel is way better than living in cracky ASU dorm. You get your own bed and your room got cleaned often.
Living in a hotel is probably better than dorm rooms.
Probably????
it is.... but it is more expensive!
Lol same with GCU. Also parking on campus is insane in comparison to my junior year of college
Good training. That’s the lifestyle they can expect for quite awhile.
Every university does this. Hundreds of students drop by month 2 so they always overbook.
this happened in 2016/17 at syracuse as well. its not uncommon. they want tuition
I understand the frustration and disappointment of paying for your education and expecting a dorm room, but i wouldn’t mind living in a hotel for the meantime 😌
same thing is happening at Colorado State University
Hotels sound nice. At ucsc we get parking lots to live in, since there’s no hotels anywhere near campus.
As a current college freshman, living in a hotel doesn’t sound so bad to me tbh, as long as I have my own bed.
Hello, market?
Price machine broke
Understandable, have a nice stay
Im worried that thisll happen to me if i go to a university in the united states.
These students are too calm,,,, I would be fuming and yelling at the camera
The way they confidently said “still the same price as living on campus” I hope the money the people in charge made was worth the anger these kids are gonna give them one day
this is just regular at my school.
this is happening in many Universities
man that really sucks. they shouldn't make them pay for a hotel room, especially considering a lot of asu students are out of state students and the cost is more expensive.
This happened at UC Merced last year as well👎🏽
woooooo, but get ready for those student loans when you have to pay them back. Just advice not trying to troll. Being in debt for student loans that sometimes take years to payback sucks hardcore.
This happened last year too fyi
Them class sizes must be HUGE. tf.
That hotel is nicer than what your dorm would be.
This is ridiculous why put 1st year students in a hotel when there isn’t dorms available this is ridiculous for them I honestly think Arizona state can do a little bit better on the admissions part
Cause tons of students drop out so the dorms end up half empty. They move em out of hotels as students leave, keeps the dorms busy etc.
Okay but a hotel, with a pool and free breakfast every day???? As well as access to a gym??? Sounds better than a dorm room where you have to share showers with everyone in the dorm on the same floor.
I bet that CZcams guy who films pickup chick videos has something to do with ASU’s popularity.
Yep. At my son’s high school, great looking girls who didn’t have the strongest academics applied to ASU. Not trying to label or objectify anyone, just stating fact.

It makes profit for the elites so it's legal
Kid in the thumbnail and interview looks so much like NBA player Tyler Herro lol
Doesn’t asu also have an insane drop out rate
2 new dorms not enough. Build like 6-8 new ones. 15 stories tall each
Hotel probably way better than any of the dorms
*maybe increase the enrollment standards? and not just accept anyone who knows how to write their name as a standard of enrollment.*
This is ASU one of the biggest party schools in America. More students = more money for them.
Thats awesome as heck, who wud complain! As long as its not far as heck away from the school, id trade my door room for that luxury all day
really need to lower acceptance rate.
"ACU is growing in popularity" for what and why?
Aren’t hotels like mad expensive tho? $100 a night is like $3000 a month
What, I am applying for this school
As far as dorms are concerned, a hotel is better. I understand its not the freshman experience many kids dream of, but it's not the end of the world. I started school during covid and it was weird but it was what it was and we all moved on.
they caught me looking gross on my way home to do laundry 😔
But at least they're first in innovation 😆
It should be illegal to require freshman to live on campus, this is just one example why. My friend was required to when her parents lived walking distance away from campus. It's extortionary. I literally waited to go to asu until I was "too old for dorms" - what they literally told me. I was 19 at the time and just got an apartment with people on an on campus roommate finding board.
There are MANY 19 year olds in dorms. Do you look older?
@@Plasticsoldier64 No, in fact i got in an argument with a guard at a casino last night cuz i didnt have an ID and im 27 now. im like dude i dont look like a kid. Those 19 year olds in dorms today were in dorms at 18. they kick you out at 20, right before you can buy beer. But if you dont start at 18, you're too old to start living in dorms after that
God Damn. Now WE have to pay for their housing?
Same thing happened to UCSB
#1 in innovation tho😁😁
Building more dorms is not the answer. ASU needs to lower the acceptance rate.
Hated dorm life. I'd rather be in a hotel--even with a roommate.
