Nothing can replace the lasers
Because it's not, the remake has it's own separate continuity, it started from Resident Evil Remake (2002) followed by RE2R (2019), RE3R (2020), and now RE4R (2023) they're still canon, they just don't follow the original timeline continuity, take Operation Xavier for example, the event IT SELF did happened but how the events are presented is entirely different from the original (in the original it was only Leon and Krauser that did the mission, but in the Remake, Krauser had a squad of special units and was their commander)

"does not totally" here is where you're wrong, it doesn't totally replace the original because it's not as good in some important aspects, the reality is that they really tried to, not a genius move.

That "better job" is having Leon assigned to Ashley's *personal* detail. More subtle than "overtime" but it's unquestionably still *overtime* .

I felt like Ashley was still kinda propositioning Leon, and was just a slight bit classier about it.
They were also flirting a lot during the game. At some point she says Leon would look dashing wearing armor. Totally implying he was her knight in shining armor. She was really awesome in this game. No forced "Girl Power", but an actual strong woman, doing her best to survive and not be a burden as much as she can.

This game definitely avoided horny jail while still being sexy.
Yeah, like capcom didn't adapt Ashley for modern audiences (please stop saying woke instead say "adapted for modern audiences") and instead made her a likeable character but not a strong capable one because otherwise it would be adapted for modern audiences and not true to her character...
My favorite bit, is that when you step in a beartrap with Ashley around, you can see her slightly panic and move her hands like she's unsure if she should help or not. Also we need to bring back NPCs tossing you ammo and stuff in modern games, it's cool. Also Ashley acts so much like a kid in the original that I didn't know she was an adult.

The supercut of bear traps reminded me of Sideshow Bob making his way across a yard full of rakes.

This remake is a straight up 10/10 masterpiece, highly recommend anyone who hasn't played it to get it.
i played the og a few months ago for the first time and im surprised how much they managed to keep things the same while upping the pacing and adding new mechanics.
I have the VR version on Quest 2. The console remake is on my wishlist.

3:20 it may be worth noting that Matt was playing in hardcore difficulty; like a champ taking motion sickness, repetitive stress injury, and doing days of genius level editing in stride for our benefit & amusement.
The remake was able to capture almost everything I loved about the original game that I have brought on almost every platform, it is really amazing and fun while also doing a lot of new things.

I think Ashley offering to get him in her security detail is her way of spending more time with him. Itâs not a blatant offer for sex like the original but itâs not just an innocent â hey I can get you a better jobâ either

Honestly, jokes aside, I saw it more as admiration. Unlike the original, Ashley seems was less thirsty for Leon as the action hero and more genuinely interested in him. There is a line towards the end of the game after they get the parasites taken out where she basically talks about wanting to be just like him. I find this subtle line of dialogue masterful in making Ashley a WAY better character. I think, by the end, Ashley feels like she contributed enough and admires Leon's bravery to the point where she would like to maybe be his partner at some point. In other words, way less thirst then the original. True, they do flirt a bit in the castle, but even then it really just felt like they were getting along, giving simple compliments. I feel Ashely, in this game, actually cares about Leon, as a person, and wants to help rather than a brat that just sees a hunky piece of meat.

I mean, the line where Ashley suggests a new job is in itself implying that she wants to be near him more. Overall I like Ashley here better because for she isn't as childish anymore so it's not weird for her to make such a proposition.

I never played the original so I'm playing this new game with fresh eyes. I'm loving it, it builds on RE2 very well on the gameplay, graphics, vibes, and Leon-ness. Super fun time

this game finally made a Resident Evil fan. I owned and tried Village and Biohazard previously, but they just never grabbed. Here I just had to eradicate a village of old men and ladies and I was hooked.

RE 7 is a welcome one as a horror fan. seeing how claustrophobic the game was inspired by chainsaw massacre, The Thing, and Paranormal Activity.
So you mention 2 games you tried in a franchise with like 20 games, including now 4 remakes. Still have a lot to explore and find lol
I'd defintely reccomend RE2R like everyone else here in the comments, but do keep in mind it's less action based and more horror based in my opinion

I think Ashley asking LeĂłn to join her âpersonal detailâ was suggesting that heâd have a job where they could bang pretty much whenever they wanted. Sheâs also a lot flirtier throughout which makes that proposition make more sense at the end whereas in the original it just felt kinda random and hilarious
I had never actually screamed at a game in fear. My girlfriend witnessed me get terrified and scream all throughout this game. Itâs fantastic.

I honestly think Ashley is one of the very best parts of the game. She's very like-able and the dynamic between her and Leon is what gives the game its emotional heart. I can understand not being a fan of escort gameplay, and typically I'm not, but that aspect added tension to the game and also gave me motivation in each fight. It put me into a "protector" mindset, which I enjoyed. Maybe it's just subconscious to some people, but I think that's a huge part of the identity of RE4 and the game would be significantly worse without her character.

Best way I can describe the original Resident Evil 4 is its a horror themed James Bond movie. Not the new serious ones but the goofy Sean Connery ones.
I realised that this game was releasing, quickly tried to finish RE2 Remake (I only had the final boss and bit before it) then after the credits as I was about to go start RE3 Remake I remembered the 2nd scenario so now Claire is speedrunning
I'm glad Shelby understands that seeing Leon snap a man's neck with a chain is indeed the hottest thing everđ
