McAfee Knob Hike | Appalachian Mountains, Ep. 3

- Known for its scenic panoramic views of the Tinker Cliffs as well as the Roanoke and Catawba Valleys, and for being the most photographed point on the Appalachian Trail, the McAfee Knob hike is a little over 8 miles in distance round trip and is located on Catawba Mountain near Roanoke, Virginia. We would have loved to have seen this place at sunrise or sunset. The trail itself is moderately difficult, despite its elevation gain, due to the length of the total hike. Bring some lunch, or breakfast, or dinner. It's a nice place to enjoy food.

This is the third episode of our Appalachian Mountain series where we took a two week road trip from Shenandoah National Park down the Blue Ridge Parkway and explored the Great Smoky Mountains. From hiking various portions of the Appalachian Trail up to summits and balds, to exploring majestic waterfalls and bluffs and historical mills and cabins deep within Appalachia, we definitely enjoyed seeing the beauty of America's National Parks.

We have not done this hike, but it looks pretty amazing. Our hearts were beating fast on some of those cliff shots! Love the Magellan dance at the end! :)
Magellan is afraid of heights, and dancing in public. This video he got to conquer both LOL. To me, you can see he is scared out of his mind in the thumbnail.

Thanks! All we kept hearing was that we had to do it. We are glad that we did. Wasn’t too strenuous, just a little long. Views were 110% worth it

Getting ready to take the children there to hike. I did the Triple Crown in one day last year on my birthday... McAfee knkb, Tinker cliffs and Dragon's tooth. It was a killer, but worth it! Thank for the video!

I have done that hike but done it with going up that Appalachian trail and going down the fire road.

Ahhhhhh! You were literally like 15 minutes (or less) from our homestead! Next time you do this we have to collaborate!! When you're on the Knob we're north/northwest in your viewfield!

@@northcarolinalee1441 I guess it depends what you plan on doing, but mcafee is right near the Blue Ridge Parkway and Shenandoah is northeast. Peaks of otter was a really nice area off of it that we visited about 45 away with lots of hikes. There’s so much to do on the blue ridge!

I think you can yes, but not sure since it’s been a few years.
I went Monday and yes overnight parking is allowed and it was a great hike
