  • Getting a cheap aerotow by firing up the Turbo 'off the wire'. Thanks to this I got many good flights on days when the tug wasn't available or if I just wanted to save some cash. If the engine failed to start, I was already on the downwind leg and would have landed, engine up, after a curtailed circuit.

Read “engine fire” in the title and thought something completely different!

Your idea of 'already on the downwind leg' is different to mine, Keith!

Don’t think you’ve factored in the cost of a engine refurb once the engine life has quickly arrived.

What height do you get off the winch launch when you do this? I've just bought a cT, so am keen to learn.

On this flight, I only had 900 feet from the launch, so it was marginal. Before take off, I had rehearsed every movement several times to make sure I didn't fumble or forget anything when I got to the top of the wire. The lowest I've ever attempted this was from an 850ft launch, but I have had a lot of practice. I did all my early test fires straight after aerotow releases at 2,000 feet to practice.
