Setting up my raised garden beds

  • I set up my raised garden beds using water troughs. I first removed as much vegetation possible using my mower on the lowest setting. I then laid down some weed barrier and installed some pea gravel as a base. I took the water troughs and drilled a bunch of 1/4 inch holes in the bottom of them. I filled them with a few inches of pea gravel and then weed barrier on top. Filled it with an organic composted soil that I picked up from a local all organic nursery. Then planted a bunch of veggies (tomatoes, cucumber, okra, jalapenos, bell peppers, onions, water melon, cantaloupe, eggplant). We then put mulch over the soil and around the plants. At this point things are going pretty good. It's been about 2.5 months and I'm getting a lot of production out of the okra, cucumbers, jalapeno. Everything else is steady growing.

Hello. Excellent idea. Please tell me more about the "greenhouse" at 0:01 to 0:04.
    Thanks,

Thanks! I actually build that greenhouse last spring. Its 16ftx16ft and about 10ft tall. Pretty easy to build just a little time consuming. Everything is treated pine except for the rafters... because well I can't afford cedar. 4x4 for the posts set in the ground about 3 ft. 1x6 for the horizontal boards that go about 3 ft up the sides. Rafter were just 2x4s. I stained everything with chocolate colored stain. I used the polycarbonate sheets that are made for green houses and covered porches that they sell at home depot (most expensive part). I made everything myself except for the hinges and door handles. Took me about 3 weeks total to finish everything. I'll see of I can make a video from the photos I took while building it. Very easy build. Not as complicated as one would think.

Gravel is the worst thing to put in your garden. It will absorb a lot of sun radiation and make your garden super hot and super dry during the summer.

Probably a farm store like Tractor Supply. But, wouldn’t you have to drill a bunch of holes for drainage?

Ya that's what I ended up doing and also filled the bottom 6 inches or so with pea gravel

@@scrappynotcrappy Just went to Tractor Supply. $269.00 for that tank. I’m gonna build mine out of treated lumber, line it with plastic to keep away from the chemicals, about $70.00 for a 4x8.

this is awesome. What state are you in? Thinking of something like this, but not sure how the steel will hold up in Florida

Tractor supply and local livestock feed stores will carry them or at least tell you where you can get them.

Thanks! I purchased mine from a local supplier but they sell them at tractor supply down here in Texas. Pretty much any livestock feed store would know where to buy some in your area.

what is a bunch of quarter inch holes? maybe 12 per sq ft?

12 per sq ft seems plenty. I just randomly made a bunch of holes maybe 5 inches apart or so.
