I used to order primarily from Baker Creek since everyone talked them up so much. I thought their prices were a bit high on a few things, but as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. Usually. Two years ago, I tried Migardener since they are in Michigan and I live in Michigan. I was VERY pleasantly surprised. At the time, their seeds were $1 a pack, they've since gone up to $2. That same year, I also ordered some from Baker Creek. Three of the seed packs from Baker Creek were torn open in the envelope, and I ordered climbing Tall Telephone peas and received Little Marvel peas. All the Migardener seed packs were in perfect condition, and I got everything I ordered on Thursday by the following Monday. The germination rate was MUCH higher from Migardener and most of them had more seeds than Baker Creek, an example was Love Lies Bleeding Amaranth, 100 seeds for $3 at Baker Creek and 1,000 seeds for $2 at Migardener. This year I stuck with just Migardener. Hoping I get the same high germination rate as the past 2 years.
Thank you got the info. I just subscribed to your channel. Another heirloom seed company is The Seed Savers Exchange based out of Decorah, Iowa. I have been using them for years along with Baker Creek. I am very happy with them. 😌
I know about Baker Creek and have ordered from them before. I've also perused Rohrer's Seeds and Mary's Seeds but not in-depth. I' certainly going to check out the other seed companies you've mentioned, Ohio Heirloom Seeds and Sow True. Thanks for sharing your seed haul!
I am eating home-grown alfalfa sprouts as I watch this, lol. I've grown sprouts for over 40 years. It's one of the few homestead things I do well, lol. Just ask if you have any questions. I'm in Missouri and lived not far from Baker Creek for decades. I'm so proud of the Gettles for turning that business into what it has become. Now I live closer to Morgan County Seeds, which is a Mennonite owned enterprise, I think. They have good prices, but not flashy packages. To be honest, I get seeds on Etsy quite a bit now. I set the filter for US sellers.
Thanks for sharing! Yes, please do a follow up video regarding the germination rate of the seeds you purchased from these companies. Looking forward to the 2022 growing season! 🤗Happy growing to you! 🌱🪴
I listened to Jess from Roots & Refuge about the tomato Dr. Wychie also and planted it this past year 2021 and was very very disappointed. First off, it had a bland taste to me and also to my husband and we are big tomato eaters. It tends to be on the mushy side and we both voted to not plant it again. We like the more acidic tomato tasting tomatoes which Dr Wychie is not. Hope you like the more mellow tasting tomato and are not disappointed. We definitely were!!! Cherokee Purple, & Mortgage Lifter are more to our liking in taste.
Amazon has some really good seed packs. Some of them are marketed as "survivor seeds" or "prepper seeds" which is really for nimrods. But the seeds are heirloom and good quality. Even selling most of the same varieties as Migardener and Bakers Creek. Not to mention you can get several varieties all together (individually packaged with in the set) for far less than half the price!! About the same amount of seeds too. Maybe do a video on that? Seems like a fun video. You do not have to be a nimrod scared that everything is going to shut down to get them and grow them. So many different options too. From individual seed packets to seed pack sets.
Thanks for sharing Me too I ordered early and ordered new heirloom varieties of corn that I will grow in spring of 2022. I will be looking forward to the update of the seed planting and growing. ❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the info. I haven't heard of some of these companies so I will check them out. I have also used seed savers, victory seeds, harris and others. Have you heard of renaissance seeds? They have endless types of tomato seeds and also peppers and some other veggies and flowers. They are in southern Indiana.
I just came across your channel! I love Baker Creek! I bought the Brush Strokes Viola Pansy’s this year, hoping to maybe try them in hanging baskets! I’ve bought a lot of seeds from Botanical Interests and MIgardener this year, I hope they do good!! ☺️
I just subscribed to your channel. I love seed hauls..and yes to a follow up video! Your descriptions and information is direct and answered any questions I might have. Plus, your voice has a soothing quality..which some channels narration's voices do not have. Main Street Seed Supply & Botanical Interests are two of the seed companies I order from. Happy Gardening!
@@TheHomesteadTrail I ordered some seeds and egyptian onion and horseradish from Sow True and let them know that The Homestead Trail on youtube recommended them.
Open pollinated of course, can be cross pollinated or could have been cross pollinated. Baker creek supplies me with the majority of my seeds, If possible I single seed each cell in a tray to monitor germination rates. Theirs is normally 90% or better. I grow at least a 100 seeds of any new variety I try. Taste is a different issue; can vary from plant to plant, especially from tomatoes and chilis. I have found that to be true no matter the source ferry-morris, burpee, or baker. I start several thousand seeds each year in 20x10 multiple cell seed trays in my grow room before moving to polyhouses.
just subscribed and liked your channel . I always use baker's creek so it was nice to learn new places to browse through . thanks . yes please do more vids like this :) happy holidays
I already got 3 seed orders...MI Gardener, Vermont Bean, and 3 packs (plus bonus pack) from Baker Creek. I have two more orders coming from Artie's Seeds and Pinetree Garden.
@@TheHomesteadTrail Artie's is in Texas, and they are the ONLY place I could find Aleppo peppers, which are originally from Aleppo, Syria. They are kind of sweet and mildly hot.
Like some of the others here my experience with BakersCreek hasn’t been as glowing as yours. While they do have the most beautiful catalog the germination rate of the more unusual seeds has been a problem. I had begun ordering 2 packs of each new variety I tried since they only put 5-10 seeds in many of the packs and have still had a couple that had that I have had less than 25% germination. One example is the white bitter gourd which I bought 2 packs of yet only had one germinate and that one sickly plant didn’t survive to produce anything. I am someone who has grown small gardens for years as well as growing up on a farm and have had few problems with germination with other seeds/companies and the more common seeds (beans, peas, carrots etc) I had much greater success with BC so it may be an issue with there being some special growing instructions that the haven’t included on the pack or the catalogue description. Their descriptions in the catalogue may be less than accurate also in some cases. One example is their snake bean which in spite of its large twisted size they say has a good green bean flavor. Had 3 plants out of 2 packs of seeds which only produced 2 beans. They didn’t mention is that the beans smell horrible or that they are covered with a filmy residue. I don’t know if it had a green bean taste because none of us was willing to try with as bad as they smelled. We did have a good laugh about it though. Do I have some BC seeds to plant now and in the future? Absolutely! Why? Because there is always the adventure of discovery of something new and fun. I also buy an occasional lottery ticket but most of my seeds will come from places like MIgardner and other places for their reliability and costs.
When Baker's Creek says you get 30 seeds it's usually closer to 50. One of the seed packs I got from another company you mentioned said about 15 seeds but there was only 10. Baker's Creek is very generous...always a lot of seeds. On the flipside, I seldom use them all.
Hello. I just found this video and, like most gardeners, I love hearing about seeds and seed companies. I enjoyed the video, but I wish you had mentioned germination rates. I wonder if the germination rates are similar. Also, some of the prettiest packages are missing important info, like days to harvest. By the way, I am in PA and use Rohrer seeds and look forward to perusing the other sites you mentioned. Thank you!
I ordered Jimmy Nardello pepper from Baker Creek and it was terribly hot and not true to type. I had no trouble with the other seeds from them when they grew.
Baker Creek isn’t special to me, honestly don’t get it. I’d rather buy from smaller companies who grow their seeds in the U.S. there are plenty of them out there.
Yea baker creek is in America and they grow seeds in America......... they do hunt for different varieties in various countries but they grow in the US.
