  • In this video, you will embark upon a journey back in time to visit the streets and to view the people of bygone London.
The video features 51 fantastic images that were taken between 1870 and 1910 at various locations around London, many of them in the East End.
You will see long ago Londoners living out their daily lives - shopping in the markets, drinking in the pubs, walking in the streets, or just going about their mundane everyday activities, oblivious to the fact that, over a hundred years later, people all over the world would be looking at them via a medium that they could never have envisaged or dreamt would one day exist!
From these photographs, those long ago residents stare out at us, as a single moment in their day is captured by a photographer who just happened to encounter them.
I have refrained from putting names to the locations since I feel that the photographs are as much about the people as they are about the places featured, and I want viewers to enjoy the scenes they are witnessing as opposed to pondering where the scenes are taking place.
Some of the locations will be recognisable to those familiar with the history and the streets of London, whilst others will be more obscure - many of them having disappeared in the slum clearances of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
So, prepare to sit back and enjoy 51 moments from bygone Londoners - your time capsule awaits!

Thanks for the music, I'm now as deaf as a factory worker who retired at the ripe old age of 23

I wonder if these people could ever conceive that many of those same streets would be gone within 70 years and the remainder would be lived in by people from a different continent 100 years later. The old East End - gone

These photos are the same as Victorian Belfast (as cities looked relatively the same in that era). Many have a romantic view of that time period but the division between rich and poor was extreme...when you think of the wall to wall long benches with a long rope going across the full length and the improverished had to sleep sitting upright leaning on this rope for support...not much of a romantic image comes to mind. Most people's ancestry can link at least someone who spent time in the workhouse. We are so fortunate today compared to then.

Watching would be much more convenient without these "special effects"........
