Did Queen Victoria Really Use A Telephone?

  • In my video about Queen Victoria and Jack the Ripper, I stated that there were rumours that, in the aftermath of the first murder, it is rumoured that Queen Victoria telephoned her Home Secretary, Henry Matthews.
This caused several viewers to question the accuracy of what I had said, since they maintained that phoned hadn't been invented at the time, so it was impossible for Victoria to have used one.
In this video you will discover that, not only did Victoria have access to a telephone, but she had been shown how to use it, and had been sent two as a gift, by no less a person than Alexander Graham Bell himself.

It never ceases to surprise me (although by this point in my life, nothing should surprise me any longer) that people can be so absolutely convinced of the objective reality of their opinions without ever having lifted a finger to do five minutes of research, that they willingly put their collective feet in their mouths in public. Often repeatedly. Thank you sir, for not only taking the time to do the research that other people should have done before commenting but for setting the record straight in a fun, lighthearted and informative manner. While I was aware that Queen Victoria did in fact make use of the telephone in the latter years of her reign, I did not know that Bell had introduced the invention to her personally. It is marvelous, that at my rather advanced age, I am still learning history. I shall look forward to your next perspicacious offering with anticipation. Cheers from Canada!

My grandpa, who was born in the 1910s, was quite the techie actually like the late Queen Elizabeth II. I have very fond memories of exploring his office which always had two computers, both of which were the latest models. Then again I think the fact he helped create the modern computer probably was a big factor in why he loved technology so much.
Anyway he would have loved this channel. He was a big Anglophile and really enjoyed reading about different subjects including history. He probably would have known this fact. Sadly he’s gone now but his kindness and curiosity in how the world functioned have influenced me.

It's because internet comments are basically anonymous and there are few consequences for stating anything as fact.

Thank you Richard, Glad you are posting again! Honestly I feel like you know so much about the Whitechapel murders case. Most people need to research their responses BEFORE they comment on your video!

My late grandpas would have agreed with you. They were both involved in STEM related fields (my maternal grandpa being a meteorologist and my paternal grandpa a mathematician and computer scientist). I knew the importance of research and double checking sources from them and from doing research in school.

Thank you for the latest upload. Very much of the time and thought provoking. It's hard to sometimes to look back at the past without it being distorted by modern eyes . This was not the case here . Well researched and narrated as always.

Remember before the internet, when we used to think that some people were a bit thick because of a lack of knowledge and access to information?

Thank you and well done Richard for setting the record straight with some certain critics. Should have done their homework before critising but I guess that is how some people are. Opening their mouths without knowing the facts. You do such an amazing job in bringing us these fantastic stories. All the time and effort along with the research you put into them is grately appretiated and are always so enjoyable to watch. Thanks to Gladys and Fred as well. Keep up the great work and I am looking forward to your next update. Best wishes to you sir. 👍

Special thanks to Gladis. I don’t think the queen googled herself. She must have had a guy for that! The royal googler.

1876 , the year my maternal grandmother was born . She died in 1972 , the year of the second moon landing . She would have been about 12 years old at the the time of the Ripper and living in London was probably warned by her parents to be on her guard .

Ironically enough, while I'm watching this... It keeps buffering because our internet signal must be weak today lol this almost never happens, but it used to 7 years ago or so.
I wonder if they'll ever get ANY of it right 🤣

That's probably one of the best pictures I've seen of her although I'd love to see her with her hair down perhaps as Albert saw her in the 1830s.
But if you don't like children why do you give birth to NINE of them...🤔

Gilbert and Sullivan opera HMS PINAFORE (1878) makes reference to a telephone.
Some people just need to do some research before reaching for the comments, and making themselves look dumb.
