It's actually really touching and healthy to reject Mary in this encounter. Feels like the player really gives Arthur the closure and chance to move on from this relationship.
Mary didn't want to live a criminal life, and while it's true that she shouldn't ask Arthur to help her deadbeat dad, she's not evil. She's codependent on her awful dad and wants to run away with Arthur, but Arthur will never leave the gang. Not even for Mary.

Well said! You are very much right about Mary and her character, she is a lot more complex than people think she is. A lot of people misconstrue her as a pretty one dimensional character, but that is NEVER the case with Rockstar, especially with a character so closely tied with the protagonist, which is usually the most fleshed out character in their games. I believe Mary only adds to Arthur's character and story, she is a great addition and I only wish there was one or two more missions with her, their relationship and their past is so interesting and I can only hope it is expanded on in future games if they decide to go further into the past of the gang.
